BRING ON THE NEGATIVE RATINGS!

Ok, Lately I have been getting alot of negative ratings for stuff. I have tried to be helpful, answering peoples questions...etc. In an easy way, but I still get negatives. I think that there are people who just hang around on the boards giving out negative ratings....its happened in a few topics/posts.

So...............................................................has anyone else have this happen to them?

EDIT: How often does the Best Posters list get updated?

I've had that happen, and i've even had a few people tell me it's happened to them sad

Not sure why it happens the only reasons that people have come up with is.

1. don't like the person
2. makes them feel big.
3. to knock a +1 down to -0

the other people were too affraid to post what you have done.

i'm just happy to be part of fxhome smile
I've learnt not to worry about those now and suggest you don't worry, if you do it will only make you turn to the darkside.

I can't see any reason, I remember saying once before that people will be scared to post.

i guess andrew's point has been made......

After reviewing the post, I removed the -1. I've done a bit more investigating then all of you may think. There is one specific person that has been causing these oddball negative ratings, and I'm going to have a talk with him. For the rest of you, remember, we always have our eyes open wink

Edit: Also, please don't forget that voting a +1 just to even out a -1 is not proper usage of the system...

Yeah, I have seen that to, one guy was knocked down to 0 points (dont know who, just saw that he had much minueses.) ! People keep giving -1 like it is candy, You should really take away the Minus, or do something about the system.

Wow, people must get a lot of candy were you from. Believe me, if candy was given out as much as negative ratings I'd be fatter than... something really big.

I see a lot of people being "helpful", where they basically type the first thing that comes to mind. The fact is, a lot of people here give really bad advice, and end up telling how to do an effect in a very complicated way that most likely wouldn't work.

So I take the time to advise other users to skip the post...

Andrew, you and other newbs on the site have been particularly guilty of this. If you were to actually make a test movie along with your "advice", to show that it worked, I would actually transfer force.

Also, I hate bad jokes. I advise users to skip those as well. twisted

I think that newbs give out the negatives when they see someone is doing better than them and think the -1 are going to hurt them in getting force seeing as they dont properly understand the system (I use to be a n00b how many still think I am? I personaly think Im starting to change my ways.) confused

i usually do do a test clip to go with it, but sumtimes i dont. Most people dont have enough time to do a test for EVERY SINGLE thing they give advice on.

EDIT: Maybe i could just keep with acting....hmmm confused

I meant someone started a thread then he went of and did one specifically for that occasion.

But maybe he was just giving an example that you should test your ideas.

I think though if sidewinder gives advice its because someone asked - he just doesn't post a random topic like "TOTALLY LEFT FEILD OUTTA NO WHERE THIS COULD WORK" (exagerrated lol).

He posts ways im sure he has tried when someone gets stuck on something or asks for a way to do it

giving advice when someone asks doesn't mean you should provide video instructions as well

Of course I have video to go with my advice...It's just all in the cinema at the moment.

When I tell someone how to do an effect, I myself have tried that effect before. You can usually see that effect in one of my movies in the cinema.

On the other hand, someone asks how to have an arrow hit him, and people jump in telling him how to do it, without ever trying that method themselves, or having any firsthand experience.

If one of you tells how to do an effect, make sure you know what you're talking about. Having an example is an added bonus.

But any advice always helps, even if that person has never tried it before.
He or she is just trying to help out,it could also be very helpful. And bloody hell! If I have to make a video tutorial for every darn piece of advice I give like my green screen so help me god!

Wrong. Think about what you're saying! Bad advice on how to create an effect can lead to lots of wasted time and/or money. If you don't know what you're talking about, refrain from posting in an attempt to get points, and let the more experienced folks help.

I never said you had to make a movie. I was saying that it is the best kind of help if you can show what you are talking about. And I will personally reward whoever uploads a test movie along with their footage.

If people have problems with any ratings they see - positive or negative - then talk to one of the mods, either on chat or using the private message system on the forum. Please do not post in the main forum about it, as all it does is clutter the place up.

So if people have a problem with a rating they've received, talk to me or Flip and we'll investigate it quickly, without causing the regular ruckus.

Lol, that's a weird perspective of it!
From the look of it people give minuses for the following

- antisocial, unhelpful behaviour
- imature posts
- obvious "suck up" or "force seeking" posts.
(Sharing links, ideas etc is one thing, but you can tell is someone is hunting for force biggrin )
- Offensive Or Stupid posts. (I got -2 for my IrishVirus joke biggrin )

or some people dash em out to wind u up biggrin Like andrew's opening post for this topic.

I think people rate the ratings too highly.

The forum is about community, and doing things for other people, and providing info, and sharing it, etc....but at the end of the day, its just the freakin internet, ok?

If someone doesn't like your post, who really gives a monkeys - its their loss.

If you have more force points, you are not a better person. If you have minus points, you are not a worse person; someone simply agree with what you wrote.

Force points are just a cute gimmick of the forum, it doesn't actually mean anything, ok?

Its a common misconception that having minus ratings actually makes people not read what you said, but given that its a tiny little red "-1" in the corner of the screen (which is quite far away from the text on my resolution) most people have read what you have to say before the -1 is noticed. And even if they *did* notice the -1, they'll read it anyway to see if they can jump on the bandwagon and slag you off some more. Either way, your post has been read: they can then draw their own conclusions especially since there isn't a "why" given for ratings, which could possibly sway their feeling.

-1 means nothing. +1 means, equally, nothing. Its a number on a website. Your life is bigger than this.

are you talking to me specificly?

it may just be a number, as you put it, but i'm sure the origional point of it was to distinguish helpful members from unhelpful members. And in a way it's doing its job well,

Take a look at the BestPosters page -http://fxhome.com/users/bestposters.html

Currently,

1st otteypm +7 0 (+7)
2nd MechaForce +5 0 (+5)
3rd callum_slade +4 -4 (0)
Sollthar +4 0 (+4)
4th Tarn

I'm not sucking up in anyway, but all those people are, normally, helpful and interesting. Example - I've never met Otteypm in my life, but he was willing to spend some of his free time writing me some email tutorials to introduce me into Cinema4D. That's my definition of a helpful member who deserves a lot of respect.

Lol, perhaps i'm taking this too far. You're right, it is only the internet, but this community is more than just a forum, we learn far much more about eachother because of our films.

no, not all of them. I've never known callum_slade to be useful. . . . notice that he has as many negative ratings as he did positive ratings. and if you'll read the thread where he got most of those positives, he was wrong anyway.
