Neighbours the movie is finally available...
3 days of shooting in june with 2 cameras, lots of light, one dolly and a glidecam.
Then 5 months of editing and putting all the pieces together with sfx.
We even shot additionnal scenes (we changed the end...! in october...)
Now here it is. The entire movie is deinterlaced ,
and the story is an original one (yes yes... We wrote it ! grrr) : 2 guys and no escape...
The neighbours are already here...
We used 2 computers and a huge bunch of softwares + pluggins to get this... Including of course... ALAMDV !
Now guess what... I am waiting for your comments...
Have a lot of FUN

A curious one, this. I have to admit that I was somewhat confused while watching it - I wasn't sure what the two men were doing or why, and when the aliens appeared I became even more lost! However, the last couple of minutes made everything become clear.
I think the title may have misled me a little, as I thought it was either going to be about a couple of Neighbours attacking each other in a comedy fashion, or a parody of the Australian soap opera. That's not your fault, of course - but it's interesting how pre-imagining movies can sometimes make the watching experience very different.
Anyway, the ending pulled everything together for me and actually made it very interesting - I look forward to watching it again. Camerawork was good throughout, smooth and well-chosen shots. Editing was a little too choppy at times for my tastes, and occasionally I was a bit confused as to who was where. Effects were nice, particulaly the final shots which impressed me. The grandeur of the last few shots combined with the explanation/twist in the story made for an excellent and memorable ending.
Despite my initial confusion, the ending turned it around for me. I suspect 2nd viewing will be rewarding!
• Music worked well
• Effects were good, sometimes very nicely shot
• The two leads were convincing (always refreshing to see a different age range)
• Fun gore
• Main guy had a fantastic moustache
• The editing was a little too choppy in place
• Very confusing story on first viewing
• The scavenging bits are perhaps a little long.

Great Camera angles, great cgi
very good twist in the story.
The only thing I would have said was to make it shorter ( for the internet and those with 56k modem )
well done, you have got skill

WOW! GREAT JOB!!! That was a excellent movie. Nice story, and everything. Nothing was confusing to me.
My favorite shot was probably the one when the camera goes through the hole in the wall at the beggining! Wow.
5! and makes my top 10

I don't quite understand it. Someone explain? (Dont have time to rewatch it)
-Camera work: i love the glidecam stuff
-vFX: very good interaction with surroundings, even if it did look a little CG
-Editing: too many crossfades
-continuity lots at parts
-music: some places it didn't fit at all.

This movie made no sense at all to me. But I liked the look of it and the feel of it, the texture!
But since it was a shroom trip out to the 5 senses I give it a 3.

Wow, that was a great movie. I was a little confused at the beginning, but I figured it out by the end. Creative way of telling the story. My favorite part was also when the camera went through the hole in the door, that was cool.
Quick question, where did you get your sounds for the parts when the camera sped up. I've looked around but haven't found any, maybe I'm not looking in the write places. If anyone else knows where to find them, please help. Anyway, great movie, can't wait to see more!

That's fun to see reactions about the story... As I said, I wrote the story... And most of the feeling (except the "I didn't get it..." !) were exactly what i wanted ... Confusion at the beginning, and everything add up before the end... I am very happy about that. ther is a beginning / a middle (with a twist) and/ an end. and a multiple meaning to the title...
About the movie now... I love the hole in the door too... And for the sounds when camera speed up... Well it's a mix of many sounds...
For the length... B4 you are perfectly right... I wanted originally, to have a 7 min max film... Then we reshot some scenes, and I had to be carefull with the "confusion" of the viewer (not too much)... Well Igot a 17 minutes film... Cut it down to 10 minutes... But now, I am not the good person anymore to edit it more. I have to show it to msomeone else and see what he can do...
Concerning the camera : we used a TRV 900 tri CCD from SONY.
Thank you and keep giving comments !

encore bravo !
Hi this is zaz
Like someone said in a precedent post : i love the man's moustache
one question : what is he doing in the office ? Why and what did he stole ?

This was good good actualy.
Nice cg to somewhat the best ive seen on fxhome (exept for sidewinder and mechaforces films)...
It would be really nice if you had colored lights and reflection on the cg if you had that it would probebly look almost real

I imagine its reffering to the aliens as 'neighbours' in a different planets in the solar system kinda way.
As for me, I thought the film was great. The two guys were pretty convincing in their roles. Loved the camera work. And yes the shot through the wall was great. The cg was a middle ground. Not stunning but far from poor. I liked the story as well.
Well made stuff. A solid production. 4 stars.

Thanks for your comments...
MUMM : *** IF YOU DIDN'T SEE THE MOVIE DO NOT READ THIS***
the story is really about 2 neighbours... After the end of the world. They are the 2 last, and they will be found by the aliens and killed. They were neighbours before too... They probably couldn't stand each other... and one is just too scared to go out, and go steal what the moustache guy is getting when is going out, risking his life. But when the moustache guy comes back... He's not happy. I think with that you can understand the sotry a little better...
FIGHT : It is my first time with CG really...I had to learn how to do all this for this little movie... And i agree, it could be a lot better, and I will try for the next one... thanks !
JJUERSS : you know what... each time i have a comment about his moustache (by the way it is the way we always call him "moustache") I sen him an email with the text in copy... he loves that and he is very proud of his moustache...!
DENISE : hope you got to understand it with Fight explanation and mine... thanks for your comment !
JONIS :If you can explain me more about this "colored light and reflection" for CG that would be great... I need to learn ! thanks
ZAZ : hehe... J'attend avec impatience... J'adore la concurrence ! quand penses tu mettre ton film online ? *** and concerning the story : he's getting computer components, because he's building a device to fight against the alien (but this is a part that got cut at the editing....) that's why he's getting this... And anyway he has to go out to find food too...
Well thank you all for your comment...

PS : magnifique moustache !
*** Thanx for this movie men ! Have you got some others ??? were ???
Good cam effects, and a good step by step story ! Nice moustache !
How many time to got this result ?

Well, what can I say but....
- Good suspensful storyline, it kept me guessing untill the very end.
- Camera work
- Nice movements, smoot motion and good angles, what more can you ask for?
The songs seemed to fit the mood and the pacing of the film.
- 3d work.
- The ships and the outer space shot was awesome.
- Live action effects.
- The blood from the older fellow's head
- The brain splattering of the younger guy was all too convincing
- The alamDV effects
- They seemed to be a bit misplaced and looked as if they could have had more attention to them.
A very well done flick. Good all around. I dont usually do this but... 5 from me.

Technically a very good film overall. Interesting angles and nice camera work. Some fun transitions. Editing is thight but pacing unbearably slow. I couldn't wait for the movie to finish and it seemed to last forever...
CG was sometimes good, sometimes bad, mostly lighting wise. The lighthing didn't seem to fit all the locations.
Alam FX were badly integrated for the most part.
Acting was over the top in places.
Story was confusing and destroyed even more by the sluggish pace of the film. One the two antagonists are dead, why does it take so long to get the punch line? I mean the CG work is nice and all, but I didn't need to follow the spheres for so long to get the conclusion. A few ellipses would have been welcome.
You obviously have talent but you need to work on your storytelling skills (the fact that you have the explain the story, characters and their motivations for most people to get it is already a serious indication of troubles! And 4 lines of dialogue don't make compelling characters!) and your pacing. It seriously hindered that film in my opinion.

Black Warrior : the story was written in april, preparation for the shooting in may and the shooting took place in june. We shot additionnal scenes in september/october. The rest of the time was CG and editing. thanks for your comment !
CX3 : The lighting effect was done with after effects, playing with masks with differents luminance...
Marek : thanks for all the "good"... and please can you tell me what you think was wrong with the alamdv effects ?
and finally JohnCarter... That was pretty tough... And I would like to answer : Concerning the story : I didn't want to tell a story in a linear mode. "He goes in- kill eveyrbody - save the princess - goes out" that's the kind of thing that i find boring... Challenging the viewer is more interesting, and i agree it is more difficult when showing the movie on the interent (small screen, medium quality...) so YES it is a little slow at the beginning : it is on purpose... You talking about viewers who didn't get it , i can talk about viewers who thought it was suspensful and DID GET IT....
Concerning the time between the death and what you consider as "the punchline" it is exactly 30 sec. Consider that as long if you want.
I understand what you are saying, and i am pleased that you looked at it, as unbearable it semmed to be for you. thanks. I am sorry that you didn't like it... But we can't be loved by everybody...
Thanks to eveyrbody, and continue the comments...
One more thing that i would like to share with you all : this little movie will be broadcast on TV in the next 2 months... They liked it ! You can imagine that i am very... happy ! wanted to share that feeling with you....

Actually, it is Canal + in France, and they already broadcast 1 min of my previous one (Garden of Dreams) in june. They called me because they want to broadcast more of it for a christmas special on short. And they asked me if I had another short for kids... I then explained to them about this one, they went on internet to see the trailer, they loved it and asked for the full one as soon as it is finished. Called them last week, and i have to send them a DV copy of it (it will go by mail tomorrow)... They apparently saw the full thing on internet, and liked it...
I will keep you updated...
thanks for asking

thanks QB. WEll the camera used is a sony tri CCD (TRV 900) but the main point to have a pretty good image is the light on the shooting... That's what you have to be careful about.... And concerning the camera thru the hole... I would like to add something here... It was done in 3d... As many other thing in the movie that nobody noticed...
thanks for your comment

Many sources actually... First one : in premiere you have the soft "quicktracks from smartsound" a plugin for music... This company actually sale CDs with sounds on it... I bought one and that represents around 70% of all the sounds in the movie... The rest is 5% web (the heart at the end is john glen's heart walking on the moon....!) and 25% that i did all by myself...
That's all !

I think it would have been better if you had put in the PC parts story, maybe it might have added more tension.
The powerful scene where it showed the guy's room sprayed with blood & his dead wife's body lying there was good.
The space effects were good, especially at the end.
Camerawork was good.
The only bad thing I could say is it could have been a bit longer, explaining the neighbours' relationship a bit more, maybe through flashback...

For your post...
And... You are the first one to ask for this one to be longer !!!! I did everything to put it down to 7 minutes... But i guess the story needed a little more than even the 10 minutes it is now... you are probably right on that...

Hey, first of all, I don't know why this is just getting to me. Good movie. I enjoyed it a lot. Now, there's a shot that starts at about 07.03 with the orbs coming up to the building and smashing through the glass. I thought that was particularly nice, as the framerate looked lower, so it looked more like film. Quite a nice little thing, and I thought the whole thing should have been like that, as it's quite effective.
