Inspired by "Kinji Fukasaku's Battle Royale", B.R.U.K Takes place in a world at war. British casualties are increasing, and the government is considering compulsery armed service for all citizens 18 - 50. To test the effectivness of untrained citizens in a combat situation, the army set up an experiment on a small abandoned island.
12 students are chosen to take part, not knowing what they are getting themselves in for. The rules. Last one alive wins. They have 2 hours to kill or be killed. However, if at the end of the two hours more than one of them remain, they will all be killed.
The film is still being shot and edited, and will be finished in a month or two.

wow.

That was pretty damn cool. I watched this one with some anticipation as I really loved battle royale and I thought this was gonna be another one of those completely botched up fan film affairs. But it wasn't. At all.

For one, you seem to have a cast! Thats always good news. The effects were cool as was the head shot at the end, very nice. Slick cuts. Good camera angles. Nice location. I shall look forward to seeing all of this one.

A very high 4. In fact, I'm pretty tempted to give it a 5. So I will.

Excellent.

Cheers.

Ok. major problem here, what the hell is with the light swords in the trailer (or infact in the film at all?). Yeah the last shot was nice.. although you can see the dudes hand, and some of the other shots were nice (including the sped up shot going through the location).

<--above comment explained - I hate lightswords.

I do look forward to seeing the final full version, it'll be interesting to see if you use a grainy/murky filter (just like the original did), and also how your idea and adapted plot works out.. settings will also play a huge part as some of shots didn't seem very 'BR' as it seemed you were in a back garden?

I may come across as a bit harsh, but Battle Royale is one of my favorite films, and it doesn't need to have a lightsword fight.. keep that to Star Wars films. Good luck on the full thing, I await with highly critically breath.

3/5 - it has some good angles but other aspects stop it from being a 4. smile

thankyou for your comments. I too adore battle royale and look forward to the sequal, however it was not our intention to re-create the film, I was inspiration. we called it b.r.u.k to show our source of inspiration, so for this reason, the story is not true to the film. the dudes hand you see is the guy doing the shooting, holding down the guy who gets shot. It's fair enough that you do'nt like lightswords and i agree that they arent necessary, but as a newcomer to alamdv, i felt i had to do it once!, and i didnt want to do star wars! It also makes a nice weapon to be given in that situation!! the location is a small residential island in London. It has woodland at one end, and a large boat yard in the centre. There are houses, but BR's island had houses/huts also!

As we still have a few scenes left to film, feedback and critisim will be helpful, thanks.

Loose the lightsabers! PLEASE! they will lower your movie, take away thoose and you seem to have a heck of a movie here, I LOVE THE DEPTH OF FIELD! What camera do you use? Or what Lins do u use?

The locations looks great, also the bullethits, blood etc. etc. Most of it looks really good!

I am very kind with rates, 5/5

oh, one thing, next time, make a nicer thumbnail !

I quite liked the lightsabers. razz As long as you don't use Duel of the Fates or do something similarly unwise.

This is looking good, love that final shot! biggrin I'd better go watch Battle Royale before this comes out...

Really damn good...caught my attention in a second. Great pacing, sweet cinematography...and the one thing i need to know...you color corrected i'm sure...some parts have little saturation in them and really bright light spots...it loosk great! tell me how you did that i hope its not a fluke!

we wont be using duel of the fates or any star wars music. i used a canon xl1s (gl1) for the film with a standard lens. i used the ND setting and increased the contrast, other than that, i haven't done much colour correction. some days we filmed, were really bright and sunny, giving us good shadows and contrast. in the film, the shots done on sunny days look a lot better than those on cloudy days. i realised how important lighting is, while shooting this. We never meant to make this film, we were supposed to be shooting a feature we've been planning since feburary, but we couldnt shoot, cos i broke my collar bone, so we thought up this in about a week and just started making it. I'll be shooting our feature in march, which will hopefully look alot better, since its fully scripted and storyboarded, where as this wasn't.

Nice trailer. I have to echo some of the words from fellow FX'ers:
Really liked the pacing, lot's of info put over swiftly but easy on the eye as well.

I liked the integration of the FX, they added to the look of the trailer rather than dominating it (light swords are fine, whatever ) wink

Looking forward to seeing more.
My only gripe, and this is in no way an attack on you personally, is that I really don't like the whole 'gun on it's side, firing thing'. Just a personal 'pet hate' as I think it looks naff.

Good job though!
4 from me!

personally, i think it looks stupid. Being an actor myself, (not like some famous hollywood person...darn) i NEVER hold a gun that way....

actors do what the director says....or they should.

yeah, but these actors are my mates, and half the point in making a film is to enjoy the process. we all have a laugh doing it, so if someone wants to hold a gun like that, then he can. it doesnt really matter. ( even though we all took the piss out of him for it! ) if someone has an idea for their character, or something they wanted to do, I let them do it!. Its more fun that way. my mates have been great in making this, giving up a lot of their time, and following directions excellently, but you've got to allow them to contribute to the project aswell in someway. in summary, yeah it looks crap! blame craig!

i dont think this deserves a 4. all it is, is a few clips of people running around. at least the other trailers have a plot. the end shot is good, but you cant expect that to componsate for the film. i'd go watch althetics if i wanted running. hope i'm wrong when i see the film

sorry, i know tht is ure opinion an all and i respect tht, but trailers are not generally there to tell the plot of the story necessarily..they r there to appeal to the audience and make them want to watch the film..wen goin thru the clips originally we did actually agree there was too much running so we altered some, but tht is actually the nature of battle royale itself..ppl just running about afta each other..if u dont like tht then fair enuf but personally i think it works well to attract viewers. peace

filming this saturday and hopefully next sunday, then its done and it'll be posted ASAP

*people got hurt - bruises, concussions and blood loss for some!
*pretty guy messed his hair up, but stylists were quick to respond and no
lasting damage was done. a tradgedy quickly avoided.
*now stop posting stupid tings you jackass! you know who you are!!

peace

p.s - i was thinking of posting another trailer showing a little bit about each contestant in the "battle royale" so people could vote on the order in which they think they will die from the last five survivors to the winner. i could give the winners all my force points since i dont quite see the need for them! ( as long as nobody who was in the film or knows me posts the answers as that would be really gay of them as it would ruin it for those who dont know - so PLEASE dont do that). i might do that a day or two before i post the film

A few questions to you chuter. What plugin did you use for the muzzle flashes? Also, what effect did you do to make the screen "rumble" when the explosion happened? When the guy is sitting behind the garbage can, what are those laser things that he is hiding from, and thats live smoke, right? Again, great job on this. I cant wait to see the full thing. Good luck with it.

the muzzle flashes were standard cinematic muzzle flashes with alam lightbulbs behind them. the rumbling is a plugin on imovie3! ans those laser things are tracer fire from a machine gun, which was just a thin yellow lightsword with hardly any glow. the smoke is real.
we have half a scene to film this sunday, then its done, but continuity might force a delay, since, believe it or not it's snowing in england right now! should be posting the film in about two or three weeks. thanks again.

It's a very, very good film. Extremely surprising, genuinely touching and immensely moving at times. It's all about friendship, and love, and the corruption of power and morals.

Needless to say, I was very pleasantly surprised when I saw it a few weeks back.

Are you talking about BR or BR2?

I agree the 1st one was amazing, not because of the violence but because of the story it told.

Most touching scene = the revealment of a childhood crush (too late).

And the music was just fabulous too smile

Im talking about BR, I have yet to find a translated version of BR II though I have heard it is not so good.

BR UK looks to be pretty close to BR, and still cannot wait to see this

hope it lives up to your expectations! i'm afraid it isn't touching or moving though....and the musics pretty different, and its kinda nothing like the brilliant original, but hey!

BR2 didnt have the same impact, since it was no longer friends killing friends. not once do you care about the characters, and it just becomes an over long film that just makes political stabs against america in one long monologue after another. also, the box advertises Takeshi Kitano alot, as did the trailer, but he's only in it for a few seconds.

also, check out "Audition" and "Ichi The Killer" by Takashi Miike

its been a pain, i finally found someone with enuff webspace to put it up. i gave him a compressed copy, he put it up and i submitted it to the cinema section, but thhe file was freezing about 10mins in, then i spoke to the guy whose webspace it is and he says his webspace has been bought by someone else or something, so he's had to re-upload it. he's uploaded around 3/4 of it. the second its all online it should be up. sorry for the ridiculously long wait
