The problem with that is that all houses look different, so it wouldnt fit for everybody's movie.

redhawksrymmer is probably right, minatures would be a good way to acheive this effect.
I suggest that you look here:
http://www.angelfire.com/movies/nobudgetsfx/nobudgetsfx.html
They have a section on building and blowing up minatures (among other things)
They suggest using model railway buildings (which do actually look very good.)
