I wonder how it is, does plugin I make must be my own design? For example: can I use things like shots from movies, sprites from games etc?

I don't think so. There's a Star Wars section with loads of objects from the movies. Plus, there's a Spiderman plugin. Just don't convert any other program plugins to AlamDV format.

So, any other things I can't do, despite converting plugins from other programs?

I think you can only use material that isn't copyrighted. Most of the Star Wars ships are from Sci-fi 3D and they allow use of the meshes if a link or reference is given to them or the author. Some people use the preset tools in programs like Discreet's Combustion (I think) and then submit them as plugins, which should be ok by Discreet although some people on the community just think that it's lazy to just "rip off" these presets.

The best way to go, and the method I always try, is just to create any plug-in you want from scratch. Even if it is an effect you have seen somewhere else, just try to replicate it, rather than ripping it off. That way, you get a unique effect, you are clear of copyright, and anybody who wants to use the plug-in is safe, even if they are using it on a profesional project. It is a bit more dificult creating plug-ins this way sometimes, but it is worth it.

So I have to look out on what I'm doing? Cannot take a screen from movie/game/etc. without permission?
Ok, I'll be careful wink

Yeah Axeman, I agree, it's always better to do something by yourself.
But I had in mind making game sprites plugins, that would work great, if you want to make a movie with game characters, but seems that I'll forget about it. I can desighn my own characters, but that would be something else.
Thanks!

Yeah, generally its best to avoid that sort of thing. There might be some instances where you can get away with it, if its for personal use and you own the game , but the thing to remember with plug-ins is that you don't know who all of the end users will be, or what type of project they are working on. By creating original plug-ins, you prevent anyone from getting involved in copyright difficulties, inadvertantly or otherwise.

Of course, you could always try contacting the creators and asking for permission as well. Sometimes they will let you use stuff.
