Just select import image stream from the same place you import media normally.

I tried this method but if the animation file is saved as seperate .tga files in a common file, what should I import, the main file or the .tga's?

Creating an image stream, such as from 3ds max should produce a list of image files such as

image0001.tga
image0002.tga
etc...

Put all these into a folder "MyImageStream"

Then when you go into Chromanator, click File > Import Image Stream, and select the "MyImageStream" folder.
