Ultimate List of Music Resources

Hello all. I have decided to create this list of music resources because music is one of the most important aspects of a movie, but can sometimes be the hardest. There are three lists, two of sites for downloading music, and one of sites for downloading loops that you can use to make your own music.

Important Note!!!
Please note that none of this music can be used for commercial purposes unless it says so on the site. Most of these links are to professional composers who have generously made their music available to download for personal listening only.

I hope this list is helpful to everyone. If you know of any other sites that would make a good addition to this list, PM me and I'll make sure to add it and give credit appropriately.

Music Composers

http://www.billbrownmusic.com/ - Bill Brown

http://www.maartenspruijt.com/ - Maarten Spruijt

http://www.edgen.com/ - Justin Durban

http://www.shojin.com/ - Marcus Aurelius

http://www.seanbeeson.com/ - Sean Beeson. Will do custom scoring for your movies (for a cost).

http://www.coldnews.co.uk/ - Chrislad, Fxhome member. Has some interesting rock/electronic sounding stuff.

http://www.sound4movie.com/?page=music&lang=en - I'm not sure who's website this is (the English translation doesn't list who's site it is), but the music is really good.

http://michaellawmusic.com/ - Michael Law

http://www.paulhouseman.com/ - Paul Houseman

http://robin-hoffmann.com/ - Robin Hoffmann, composer working alongside Marco von Moos (Sollthar).

http://www.jesperkyd.com/ - Jesper Kyd

http://www.jaredhudson.com/ - Jared Hudson

http://www.kmmproductions.com/music.html - Kevin Manthei

http://www.rudypicardo.com/ - RudyPicardo, FXhome member.

http://www.fredrikblom.com/ - Fredrik Blom, FXhome member pl. PM him if you are interested in having him compose something for you.

http://www.jamiechristopherson.com/index2.html - Jamie Christopherson

http://www.inonzur.com/ - Inon Zur

http://www.larrygroupe.com/download-audio.html - Larry Groupe

http://dondavis.filmmusic.com/audio.html - Don Davis, composer of the Matrix movies, has some samples from his film scores here. (Thanks to Frozenpetasse for this link and the previous two) smile

http://www.magicboxmusic.com/main.html - Magic Box Music, they license music for trailers and tv spots, similar to Immediate Music, with the exception that they have many samples available for download.

http://esposthumus.com/ - Awesome artist, includes high quality, two minute samples of all of their songs.

http://thebrb.com/stockpile/index.php?act=view&item=garrypinchesmusiccollection - Garry Pinches

Communities and Other Sites

http://www.vgmix.com/ - Community of video game remixers. (Thanks Serpent) smile

http://www.ocremix.org/ - Another community of video game remixers.

http://acidplanet.com/ - Community of music makers. Lots of variety.

http://www.purevolume.com/ - Listing of independent bands, some signed, some not. (Special thanks to wdy for this link!)

http://www.soundclick.com/ - Independent artists

http://magnatune.com/ - They have an online license calculator that tells you immediately how much using a song is going to cost you. One of the options is noncommercial/school projects, which you have to email them about giving information about your project. If they agree, they'll supply you with an .mp3 FREE. I suggest being mature & informative when contacting them though, not saying "omg im a 11 year old kid i have a cool james bond film with lightsaber fx, want some cool music from ur site".

Even if you're wanting to make some dvds & sell them to a couple of people, Magnatune's pricing is decent for many to afford this (Thanks to Mellifluous for this info).

http://www.macjams.com/ - Community of Mac music makers (thanks domdino).

http://www.freeplaymusic.com/ - Royalty free music (in certain situations). Offers full length, 60, 30, 20, 15, and 10 second versions of all songs (thanks Brettsta). smile

http://transparentcorp.com/products/thoughtsounds/ - Offers some music for purchase, good moody/ambient style film music (Thanks Maxmoon smile ).

Music Loops

http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/searchText.php?search= - Some instrument samples and other sound effects. (Thanks Mellifluous) smile

http://www.acidplanet.com/tools/8packs/ - A sampling of high quality loops available for free download each week. The loop libraries that make up the 8 pack are offered that week on sale for purchase.

http://looperman.com/ - Lots of good loops for download.

http://www.flashkit.com/loops/ - Another good selection of loops.

Again, if anyone has any other links to add to this list, PM me and I will be sure to add them.

Have fun! smile

Those are some pretty sweet resources. I knew about some of them, but still. It's good that you spent the time to put all those links into one place. I'm positive that a lot of people will use these in the future. +1 smile

Thanks for the feedback! I was going to add freeplay, but I wasn't sure about all their copyright issues, but I'm sure it won't be a big deal for amatuer work, so I'll go ahead and add it.

I checked them out. They have some pretty awesome stuff, but you're right. They only liscence to professionals in the industry working on major films and that sort of stuff. sad

You can use the same method as I said in another post, used to transfer RealAudio files to another format, to rip their songs, but I don't know if it would be considered legal.

Don't do Freeplay, there music was great, but since I saw Royalty free, free music, I used it and if I had won a contest, would have had to pay $500 for an ipod, I was hoping I would lose, and thankfully, did.

In all humbleness, I would like to add myself to the list. Composing for free and helped out a couple of guys on this forum in the past (Andreas, pooky and some others).

My website isn't really up to speed, but a variety of samples of my music can be found at http://www.pretzellogic.c.se/music/. Feel free to download and listen to them, some of them are already "occupied" by other projects, but some could be up for grabs. I do prefer to compose an original score for a project though - much more fun for me, and in the end - better for Your project as well.

Just send me a pm or so if You're interested...

Regards,
Rico

Yes not only is he very skilled, be he can also read minds biggrin

I told him I would not be showing him what he was actually scoring for because I wasn't allowed, yet what he composed fit PERFECTLY, every change in the song was at the very same time as the movie!

Notes on my music: Some may not be intended for public ears - uploaded as demos or "first tries" for projects. It will all be clear when I get my new site up and running...

wow, if I could grade posts Id definatly give you something. You put a lot of effort inot this.

oh and I just remembered Inon Zur (he did SOCOM II, Champions of Norrath and Baldurs Gate)

http://www.inonzur.com/img/index12.jpg

I LOVE his stuff, however I think it might be at an awkward speed for most movies...too fast for emotional scenes and too slow for action... but its definatly worth listening to!

Just wanted to say thanks for considering me a resource. Although I'd have to say your other links seem to be people or companies that are far superior and professional than me - I just do it for fun anyway.

Regardless, my thanks. I'll do my best to keep uploading my Royalty Free songs that me or my friends make.

I don't know specifically any bands, but Pure Volume has a lot of unsigned bands who would be willing to let you use their songs for free, in return for putting their name in the credits.

FXHomers:

For those using loop editors (such as ACID or Soundtrack), Sony/Sonic Foundry is celebrating the release of their newest version of ACID. The event is called the "300/30 Event" on their ACID planet site. Essentially they are giving away 300 free loops in 30 days. The link below should take you to the site, if you want more information

http://www.acidplanet.com/freeloops/?t=3050

According to the site, a new link to a new set of loops will become active every day, starting on November 8, 2004 and continuing for the next 30 days. Each link will remain active for seven days only. When the seven days are up, that set of loops will no longer be available.

On a small, note, I'll be adding a few more loops to my site during my academic break (late November)

Enjoy!

This site has a few good loops of pianos, guitars & violins plus ambient noise that could be incorporated into a score. Mostly, it's good for sound effects though.

No doubt it is nice to have easy access to free music prepackaged...but may I suggest checking craigslist, northernsounds.com, or other places where ACTUAL COMPOSERS hang out looking desperately for footage to score?

As I am one of those poor, under-used saps, I can speak for all of us when I say that film makers are using too much canned music when there are very talented composers who'd be willing to do it for free just to have something to add to their reel. Besides, does your film just repeat one mood over-and-over? So then, why would you want the music to loop?

That's a good point. For larger, more serious projects, it's a good idea to look for amateur composers who just want to gain experience. If you know of any other sites, please tell me and I will put them in a separate section in the list.
