Well I was home today going about my buisness babysitting my little sister while my mom was out somewhere. I hear someone knock on the door, I open it and see a FedEx guy thats about 6'7 he already has this little thing for me to sign. I sign, carry the pacage into my house and call my mom to see if I can open it to see what it is, she says yes. I open the pacage and see nothing but those little white fomy things, so I dig through them and uncover the box of a Canon GL2!

I was so exited I called my mom back and thanked her about 30 times before hanging up again.

I babysat for about 2 more hours and my mom comes back with another present, a Ford Expedition for my dad ( right about now Im thinking my mom has won the lottery ). Turns out these were our early birthday gifts, and someone helped my mom purchase the car ( some rich friend ) and bought it with cash and my mom will pay her friend back.

Well its about 12:25 AM and I decided I might post my story. I also put togeather this little picture demonstrating the differance between my old Sony Handycam and my brand new Canon GL2. Enjoy.

Congratulations! You're a lucky kid, there's not way my parents would ever buy me a nice camera like that. Enjoy it much. biggrin

In those two shots, the color of the GL2 is definitely nicer, although it does look like the Sony Handycam was a bit overexposed (although you probably had it set on auto exposure, which is another testament to it's bad quality!)

EDIT: Aculag, what's up with all your exclamation points followed by a "1"? Do you not proofreed your posts or what? biggrin

Unless they have changed the name the UK/PAL version is called the XM2 not the XM2320 - got one sitting in front of me and it just says XM2.

No. The Canon cameras have come with rebates for a long time. Plus, they'll probably come out with an upgrade to the XL1s first.

For Pete's sake how many times am I going to have to repeat the story? smile

Ok, I tried every single shop or restaurant that is less than 20 min car ride from here, every single one only accepted people 16+. The nearest mall is about 20 min car ride away (on bike it's maybe 40 min). So I went to apply to be paperboy but there was a waiting list. So I put up signs to mow lawns for only 5 bucks per yard (and they have big yards here) but in 2 months nobody called.

So basically this is a job-less place.

Not having to pay anything is that what you think, I babysit for free when my parents should be paying me and I dont have a job nor an allowence so there is no way I can save up for it. Im too young to have a job.

If I could somehow get the money I would have bought it myself becuase then my parents cant take it away when I do something bad.

What the crap! If you're too young to have a job, there is no way you deserve a GL2. I'm almost 16, but it would take me over a year to save up $2000 to spend on a camera.

Oh well, have fun and be thankful you have a nice camera when you're only 12. I guess, though, if it's a b-day present, technically 13. biggrin

Why should your parents be paying you for a chore? They don't have to pay you at all. Chores are in themselves payments for letting you live under their house. Your parents pay for everything else don't they? Internet, cable tv, food, clothing, your bed...and not to mention the house that you live in.

And also, allowance...I don't get it either and I'm not complaining so why should you? Money doesn't grow off of trees. Trees are first chopped down, given to a lumber company, cut into thin pieces, sent to the mint, and then made into money.....But my point is, there is no such thing as free money. So deal with it! unsure

Okay, anyone who wants to buy a GL2, myself included, needs to wake up to the fact that they won't get one for less than $2,300. That's a plain and simple fact. That's also an incredibly good deal, as the list price is $3,000, but you can get it from B&H for cheaper. smile

Babysitting whom, a little sibling? Open your eyes child, there's a thing called doing something and not hoping for something in return. When you do stuff for your family, you don't ask for money. Your parents did you a favor and raised you and I'm sure that they did many other things for you like drive you around and take you to the movies. Now should you really be asking for money for doing something as little as this for your parents?

Slick wrote:

Feeding the dog is a responsibility, not a chore. For someone who thinks he knows so much about chores, you really don't seem to show it.

Slick wrote:

What I know is that I never ask my parents for anything anymore because I know I either wont need it or it is too expensive, and I try to buy it with my own earned money. Allowance is a stupid idea. My parents set me up on it for a month once and stopped, with the reason that money is better earned and a chore is something everyone has to do in a working family unit.

I've saved all my money since I was 6 and I know very well how to manage it so don't tell me this nonsense of"your preaching something you don't practice". I know solid stone how hard it is to earn money and you should learn as well.

Ahh, but you see a chore is the same thing as a responsibility. So you're both right. smile

But I agree with you on the babysitting part. It would be dumb to babysit someone else's kids for free, unless you're getting service hours. But your own sister or brother? I mean, you do have a GL2, right?

Yeah, the dog will die if you don't feed it. Plus, it's a dog. It's not like it's an inanimate object that you have to clean every now and then. Dogs are mans best friend!

I didnt mean to put feeding the dog in there thats my mistake but the others are chores, and I consider babysitting my little sisister more of a job because my parents dont make me do it they just ask me to and if I dont they hire a sitter meaning they have to pay anyway but if I do it they dont pay me..... crazy

So are you saying that if a kid down the street asks me to pick up his soccer ball that he accidentally dropped, he then has to pay me. Right?

It's a catch 22 right in your sentence. Your mom "hires" a babysitter and "ask[s]" you to babysit your little sister. In essence, she doesn't "have" to pay you. So....what's your problem?

Hmm...I guess I can understand where Slick is coming from. If my parents said "We would like it if you would mow the lawn for free; but if you don't, we'll pay someone else to do it", it wouldn't make sense to me either.

But you have a GL2, Slick. So for the next 5 or 6 years of your life, you should willingly babysit your sister for free. smile

It would make perfect sense to me. Why would my parents pay someone when they can get the job done free? And if that option wasn't available, hiring a babysitter would be the next bet.

A babysitter is also more experienced then a 12 year old kid, so consider that when talking about who should get money and who should not. If we had children making the same amount of money as adults in the world, our economy would be corrupt.

Think about this, if you knew how to make greeting cards on your personal computer (doesn't have to be professional), would you make your own for free (besides overhead prices:paper, electricity, etc.) or would you hire someone to do it for you? I'm talking about a birthday, just a normal, small birthday. Not a wedding.

I guess you have a point. Through the eyes of a kid, however, it seems a bit unfair.

Yeah. More the reason why a kid shouldn't be babysitting, much less getting payed for it.

Because this kid certainly doesn't know the value of hard earned money.

Digi - I have more expariance with MY little sister than anyone else meaning no one else is more skilled then me when it comes to babysitting her. I know what she likes and what she wants when she cries and things like that. Are you trying to tell me that I dont deserve the cam beacause I got it as a birthday gift, just because I didnt work for it doesnt mean I dont deserve it, I was trying to get a point across that I do deserve it becuase I help out alot and if I got paid for the stuff I help out with I could have bought it myself. Unfourtunatly I dont get paid but I still got the camera as a gift so dont go telling me I dont deserve it.

Yeaah.....

Anyway, congratulations on the new cam, slick. I'm expecting some films with decent footage from you in the future smile

When did I say anything about you not deserving it? I'm just saying that now that you have it, you're giving away some kind of vibe that you are not satisfied with it when you should be in all instances.

Hmm, well if everyone is done with these random comments about chores and whatnot, I'm sure slick would like to hear some positive comments about his new camera.

I'm sure there is a forum somewhere on the internet made entirely for complaining about random meaningless things.

I thought you might have picked up on the fact I wasn't being serious when I said "Oh well, have fun with your new GL2." And nobody really deserves anything unless they work for it, but there's nothing wrong with getting a nice b-day present. I was just pointing out that it seems a little unfair, that's all.

when I was your age. it never even crossed my mind that I should get an allowance from my parents.

of course, when I was your age, it was considered punishment to be sent to my room. . . .

yeh theres no way a 12-13 year old kid should be playing around with $2,000+ cameras...its just unheard of...and really makes me extremely angry how a random 13 year old kid just randomly gets a gl2 handed to him when i (18 year old film student) have to use extremely low end cameras while working for almost 2 years to get a camera.. sad

Don't you have a job, all I do is sell lemonade to rich people and I have earned over $100 in two months. wink

I'm sure if he's 18 and has been working for two years to get a camera, he probably has a job. smile But it's not as easy as you think. If you work, you want to save up some of your money, of course, and probably save up some for college as well. Besides that, you want to have some money to spend on other things as well.

Oh, and $100 in two months isn't much, although I guess it is for selling lemonade. Once you get a real job you'll earn a heck of a lot more. biggrin

mow lawns. I have made almost a thousand dollars from the end of march to now. Just get 5 or 6 old people who cant mow lawns, and just mow their lawns on Saturdays. 20-30 bucks a pop = muchos dineros! biggrin

P.S. Old people would always rather pay a kid/teenager than a service.

-And that's Evan's tip of the Day. You owe me 2,000 dollars now (yes Aculag, thats how much it cost to think of the idea.)

Alright, what is up with this burst of giant gaming signatures? Which are horribly made by the way. I mean, they are enourmous. And they serve no purpouse. Why put giant gaming signatures on a site about filmmaking. It really makes no sense.
*Marek looks at pooky*

Signature banners should really not be half that size. Those are huge! Especially Ryans which I saw in another thread, that got cut off by malone's noobie sig killer.

This is really getting out of control. tard

Hehe, nice aculag. I was wondering what was up with that.

Pooky: also, your avatar looks a lot like Wdy's. I would consider changing it. Because I thought you were wdy for a while there. Then I realized that he doesn't make giant noobish sigs, but actually small, cool ones. unsure

Yes sorry about that, I'm fixing it. For some reason the sigs were cut off on my comp and therefore looked right size.

EDIT: Done
