A music video for the Goldfinger cover version of 99 Red Balloons smile

This was coursework that me and a friend did for this year's practical unit of Media Studies.

It was shot on a Cannon XM2, and AlamDV2 and Chromanator were used for the special effects sequences - some of which have turned out better than expected, other which aren't as perfect as we would have liked them to be (the morph that was thrown in the day before it had to be handed in springs to mind!). If we weren't working to a strict deadline, we would have re-shot quite a substantial ammount (or infact, we would have been able to take our time to get it right the first time!).

This was also my first attempt at using Chromanator, so it was tough trying to work out how to acomplish shots and get the keying right, while still being new to the program and working to a deadline. However, the chroma-key shots in the video seem to have come out a whole lot better than they would have done if we had relied on Adobe Premiere's keying tools.

We've received mainly positive feedback about the video from the people who've seen it so far - we know that there are bits that seem as though they aren't quite right, but in terms of A-level coursework, me and Rob think it's pretty good.

The compression has reduced the quality a fair ammount - but it's made the file a more managable size.

Major kudos goes to Rob for helping to make some proper bo dreams come true wink Also MAJOR thanks goes to Slick and Marek for hosting the file. Please visit www.afcommunity.com!

Constructive criticisms are welcome! I hope you enjoy it smile

Hey, that was good. The part with Darth Vader turned out very well. It might look even better with shadoes. Just a thought smile .

Pretty good job. It was quite funny when the Darth Vader stuff happened. It kinda seemed like the singer here either wasn't sure about the words to the song, or he was not comfortable singing/mouthing the words for the camera. So he's the only thing I didn't like. Oh, I also didn't really like the song. But we're not critiquing music here.

Hey thanks for the comments.

Aculag - Rob (the singer) was singing the words quite well on most of the takes we used, but it looks a lot better on video (there's not so much detail lost through compression, and so you can see him lipsynching better there). There are a few exeptions though; on some of the location work and various shots, unfortunatley the batteries on the minidisc died, and we had to attempt lip synch without a reference as we filmed it : not a good idea! Though we tried our best to alter it in Premiere to get it as good as we could, it's still nowhere near being perfect. As I say, if given the chance, we would have re-recorded stuff once we got back to the edit and saw how dodgey some bits were.

Incidentally, I didn't mention in my first post, but I play Darth Vader smile

Cheers!

Even though this has lightsabres in it, I really like it. wink

I think there's a fair amount of work in this little video and some parts look very nicely shot and very nicely edited. I don't like everything the same I must admit, but it's all in all a very solid piece of work with some cool editing and visual ideas.

Heh, thanks for the comments - I wish I had made the music, but it's the cover version of 99 Red Balloons by the band Goldfinger.

Cheers,
Arktic.

that was really good! kudos on the different locations. Made it seem like a pro music video. How did you do that last scene with the red balloon? Digigrade isn't out yet is it?

Hi,

The last scene was done using Chromanator's garbage matte feature - it was quite time consuming but I think that it makes for a visually striking closing scene smile

Hi,

I'm not 100% sure what 'colour pass' does, but I assume that it extracts all but one specified colour out of a scene, right?

I did try using a similar technique in Chromanator (an inverted chroma key, so that only the red of the scene was left in) - BUT, because Rob's skintone and the brickwork of the buildings in the bacground are also shades of red, it made it hard to get a clean key. So I opted for a close g/matte with the inverted chroma key applied, and that resulted in a much sharper effect.

Cheers,
Arktic.

Game expert -

You perhaps didn't take the time to read over the other posts, but I've allready answered about the lipsynch issue.

Rob (the singer) was singing the words quite well on most of the takes we used, but it looks a lot better on video (there's not so much detail lost through compression, and so you can see him lipsynching better there).
EDIT - gameexpert's post has now been removed, so I'll get rid of the rest of my post smile

First of all, some parts of the video needed better sync. I guess the "artist" wasn't any musical genious, couse at some parts it didn't look like they knew thiere instruments.
The singer is awfull at some parts, not even I look that boring in school.
I love the kickoff at 40 seconds, from there on the editing is also much better then the start and is great all through.
What you should do next time (if you do another video) is put flour on the cymbals, it looks great when he'll hit them. cool
(The drummer was by far the coolest guy in this video btw. good mix between retard, drunk n an artist)
The Starwars keying was great, the fight was fun and not dead serious, but what have Star Wars have to do with 99 red balloons?
It just didn't fit, thought it was fun smile
It all finished out great with the balloon in the colors of love!

Do you even know what ska is? Trumpets, trombones, and saxaphones play the biggest role in Ska, not just Goldfingers upbeat guitar rhythms. Id say they are more Ska-Core, not ska

That is still ska then... That's like saying metal isn't rock. It is, but it's possible to narrow it down more...

Anyways, this needs to be put online again. Arktic obviously has ties to the FXH team so they haven't taken the page down, but it has been down for AGES but the movie still up. I remember a much shorter limit. I'd gladly host it.

youre right, it is technically ska, but not in my book(i used to be a ska-addict a while back ). I agree also that this vid needs to be reposted, it looks good
