Attended a trade show last week as press and played through some of the games yet to be released. Thought it might be interesting for you guys if I gave my opinion on some of the bigger future titles smile

Prince of Persia 2: The Warrior Within

Following on from an awesome original, this sequel has expanded the combo's and upped the gore levels. It ran very smoothly on the console versions. The prince still has the powers of the sands of time, and I only played a 35% complete version - but well.. this game just looks superb and I'm really looking forward to it smile

Halo 2:

Well, the only reason I'm still keeping my Xbox, after lending it to Hybrid-Halo for a huge number of months is this game, and I played it for about 45mins. To be honest guys, I know you all can't wait for this game, but its not that great... especially compared to the likes of Doom3. Infact, compared to Doom3, Halo 2 isn't actually fun, its more like a chore, and the only reason I continued to play it was for a cool gaming moment. Sure, its more realistic, but its just missing everything that other FPS's are heading towards. I'm still going to buy the full version, Im sure the multiplayer is quite fun, as for the 1st person, its repetitive at best. Roll on Half Life 2 I guess?

Playboy: The Game

Hehe, well I couldnt turn down going into the little Playboy Mansion that was built now could I? Interesting game, you can arrange photoshoots with
Playboy girls and you have to manage the whole Playboy empire including the magazines etc. A lot like a mix between The Sims and Sim City. Suprisingly, I was quite impressed... although I was being shown the game by two playbunnies.
Preview rating: 6/10

Burnout 3:

Really great fun, they've improved the realism and I guess the current consoles are now finishing their run in the market, they seem to have made Burnout 3 the most realistic of all the racing games. It's a great drive and the crashes you can simulate now. Well you can crash and still continue depending on your cars damage! Great smile
Preview rating: 6/10

Metroid Prime 2:

Mostly superb stuff by Nintendo, but sadly its more of the same hit and miss combination of controls incorporated into the first Metroid Prime. The audience will be very divided by this title, but the multiplayer was very Goldeneye esque. And the graphics are up there with the likes of Halo 2. However, I'm very biased towards the Metroid series, as I think the storylines are deep and immersive. Hence the preview rating being upped a few smile
Preview rating: 7/10

Timesplitters 3 :Future Perfect

I thought TS2 was an excellent game, I still play it well passed its release and its a console FPS that is built to work on a console, and not try and be a PC fps. It's fun, arcadey and just insane in the multiplayer modes. I walked into the booth to play it with baited breath. All the regular characters were their, throwing themselves through portals and the whatnot. They seem to have introduced a more arcade Time Crisis feel to the series, the graphics have had a new overhaul and I'm really really looking forward to picking this up on release date.
Excellent series! Well worthy of having a couple of sequels.
Preview rating: 8/10

URL: http://www.eagames.com/redesign/games/ps2/timesplitters/home.jsp

Ubisoft and Nintendo put on the best shows and best booths. Crowded with people throughout the three days. After a extensive play earlier this summer of the NintendoDS - I'm really looking forward to that handhelds release... but that consoles another story!

Any questions? smile
Hope you enjoyed that!

Will update with more games I played as I bother to rewrite my showfloor notes smile

Halo: The Musical!

Thanks to the people who designed the HairSpray poster for the basic design of this wonderful

I'm pretty sure that it went:

Game
Realization of how horrible of a character the Master Cheif was so they wrote a prequel explaining him
Book based on game
Halo 2

You guys have a personal hatred against Halo 2, especially exemplified by Xcession's post. I don't know why you've set out on this mission to convince people to not buy the game, but it's getting really old. In a brief flash of wisdom, Mecha said...

Millions of people don't buy a sucky game.
So get over yourselves already. You don't like it? Fine. Don't cry about it.

Er-No, a 4/10? From what, the single player game? I didn't think that was even open to be played. I'd like to know if you're just rolling with the others on the Halo-Hating, so a little more info on your impressions would be nice.

I just thought a Halo novel was going too far. I liked to play the first one, though not much of an X-Box fan, it was fun, especially online and co-op. I can't wait until my friend gets the sequel. smile

Halo 2 sucks. you get over yourself razz
besides, i'm not on a mission to stop you buying it - you're more than free to make a fool out of yourselves without my help. I'm just on a mission to spread the word of its suckitude, and perhaps give the money to a more worthy company who've written a g o o d game

AMEN TO THAT!

Since when did Halo do massive sales? The Xbox hasn't sold well enough for it to do massive sales. Might have done well on that platform, but it was the killer game for the Xbox. Even so, I know many people who were disappointed with Halo - me more than most as I looked forward to it for years since well before it became a microsoft program.

Millions of people buy crap stuff all the time - you only have to look at the music charts for evidence of that. Of course, that could just be due to my own dodgy taste in music - maybe the stuff in the top 10 is actually brilliant. Check out the Hollywood blockbusters that make the top money - how many of them are genuinely good films?

I'm not saying Halo is good or bad (I haven't played it enough to know either way really), I'm just pointing out that massive sales are not a mark of quality. Never have been, never will be.

On a better subject --

Can't wait for PoP2! I bought the first game when it got cheap, working on the assumption that it was just a silly platform console game. So I was extremely surprised to find myself loving every minute of it. It's a superbly crafted game, and the sequel is indeed looking rather spunky.

Halo sold 4 million copies by January of this year.

Tarn, concentrate on games here. How many sucky games sell millions?

Yeah, and don't say Halo.

And we're referring to the Xbox version here, just to clarify.

Halo

oh, and trying to deflect the conversation from Tarn's description of sales demographic is completely irrelevant. His post showed how people buy shit. That is a universal truth, whether its about games, horribly overproduced teeny-bop shit, reality tv shows or ikea furniture razz

At least you didn't have to buy a separate console to play it. That's why PC games, IMO, are usually better than console.

Loads. Enter the Matrix. The Conflict games. Random crappy console generic stuff. They sell millions because they have massive advertising campaigns. Same as anything else.

By the same token, I can think of many games that are brilliant, but didn't sell well at all. As I said before, sales have nothing to do with quality.

Yeah, and don't say Halo.
You'll note I didn't say Halo was bad in my previous post. Stop knee-jerking. smile

when talking about horrible games that sell well, one game comes to mind:

Enter The Matrix

This game was really hyped, as was/is Halo. Halo is a great game, and Enter The Matrix sucked, but both sold really well. Even though I like Halo allot, Im sure many of the sales come from hype, not the game's quality

If its the killer title for the console you can expect it to sell for like every other console sold. Games like GT3 (over 9million now) and GTA:VC (over 12 million on the PS2 alone) are what I would call massive sellers. Just to put it in to perspective Super Mario Bros for the NES has sold over 40million copies.

Many poor games have sold in the millions.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - 8 million units anyone...

How about Spiderman 2 on the PC. That was one massive false advertising case, but nobody seems to have noticed.

It was advertised to be the treyarch console versions, which people seemed to love, but was in fact an INCREDIBLY bad dumbed down version by another developer. Tons of people bought it thinking it was the good one, thus resulting in quite high sales.

Yeah, the console version of Spidey 2 was great but the PC version.... dear god.

Yet again its nice to see Halo totally screwing a conversation. Halo just seem to have that effect on people.

I'm interested in giving PoP2 a go, would have liked to have played the first on the PS2. Tarn had it on the PC and it looked like you needed 18 fingers to do everything but was impressive all the same. I was just stunned it wasn't in 2D smile

I guess when you look at it, most hyped up games sell well because gamers are tricked. This was the case with Spider Man 2 for PC and Enter the Matrix. I think there is some truth behind what Mecha said. If a game sells solidly for so many months, it is most likely a good game.
By the way sidewinder, thanks for the song info

Sat down with the game and some of the Bungie/Microsoft reps for about 45 mins playing through some of the single-player. Yes, I've played it. I was hoping for greatness, but how the fudge can they even think about comparing it to Doom3 (which they did - believe me).

Also, another game which I might stick in the topic - X-Men Legends! I played that for quite a bit in 3 player, was rather damn fun (if you like the X-Men that is). biggrin

Er.. its from an isometric third person view, and its very arcade like in character selection. It's got an excellent 'leveling up' system for each character. They have intagrated cut-scenes into the game and it's full of quite a few twists etc. Mystique pissed me off quite bit whilst I was playing, kept changing her form so I didnt know if I was attacking friend or foe! smile - I guess it plays like Streets of Rage, in isometric 3D... with X-Men characters!

Hmm, don't think I took any footage of Legends!

My most forward-looking/anticipation-building/can't-wait-to-play-it-because-I-love-X-men game of the year.

Sidey, I have to wonder why you are continuing the Halo argument. You're not one to rant on aimlessly. (like myself) Halo is a game. Thats all. Good or bad. If it entertains you, good, its a game, that's its purpose. If it doesn't entertain the next guy, so what? He just blew 60 bucks. He can deal with it and so can you.

Well, do you have to use a flashlight to see what's going on?

I rant on because they talk about Halo like they are the judges of the universe who decide whether a game is actually bad. It's not a matter of opinion. It's fact.

You see, I am one of the supreme judges of the universe, and they are masquerading around, preaching lies.

Like this:

Half Life sucked! The Half Life 2 demo was even more underwhelming than the first game. -1/10.

Doesn't that get under your skin?

Er-No: More details on single player please! Arguments aside, I want to hear what it was like.

That said, you have to renew your membership Sidey. As head judge, I can't have late renewals from all the members. Tell Mecha, too. razz

On the contrary, all people are doing is expressing their opinions, which is that Halo isn't all it's cracked up to be. By the very nature of them expressing themselves, it is clearly their personal opinion and nothing else.

You shouldn't be required to add a disclaimer of "this is just my opinion, don't be offended" to every single thing you write - as it goes without saying, and would be superfluous. smile

I suspect it's more that you just don't like their opinion. razz

Fact is, this game will sell bucketloads... this game will sell online packages bucketloads... this game will sell XBoxes bucketloads... November will prove me right.
Battlefront should be awesome before then though.

Has anyone read if battlefront will be the same across all platforms? I thought i'd read something to that effect but can't seem to find it any more.

What i *thought* i'd read, was something saying that due to the obvious limitations of consoles, the game will be different on pretty much every platform, but i can't find this anywhere. This worries me if it isn't the case, as it means lucasarts will have had to cut it down considerably to pander to the lower specs of the consoles in question.

I also hope, although i think this is far more likely whether i read it or not, that PC users won't be pitched against console users. That would just be a slaughter!

OK well i've found some of the information i was looking for, i obviously wasn't trying hard enough before. The issues, limitations, whatever you want to call them are thus...

- On Xbox/PS2, online play will only be between a maximum of 16 players (8 a side).
- On the PC, online play will be between a max of 32 players (16 a side).

The maximum numbers for both console and PC double, if played over a LAN. (32 and 64 respectively).

The rhetoric regarding this is a bit confusing and given that the Battlefield series has already proved that 64 player games are possible over the internet, i'm not entirely sure whether these limits are accurate.
Another thing to bear in mind is that several articles refer to bots being used. Again the reviewers are irritatingly vague in describing whether this is MP or SP. Also, since the Xbox network is closed, online play will NOT be cross-platform.

Interesting quote from Gamespy preview:
Graphical effects are of paramount importance to the team, who claim they're trying to squeeze the last drops of power out of the PS2. Of course, the PC and Xbox versions have those bells and whistles to begin with.
It would stand to reason, therefore, that either lucas arts are
a) having to not put as much effort into the PC version because it can do things easily but needs to look the same as PS2, or
b) are putting everything into the PC version and are completely flogging the PS2

It'll be interesting to see how it goes
