What?

Anyway, I finally got those movies downloaded and watched them. Not bad at all. In the Vimy Ridge one, I thought you did a good job of conveying the whole battlefield concept, without ever showing the enemy. In fact, you only showed 3 people, I believe, but good use of sound effects and jittery camera work gave the sense of more people and a dangerous situation. I'm sure you are wishing you had had those AlamDV muzzle flashes, though, huh?

In Secret Agent Man, I was a bit confused by the kid in the orange shirt who was always in the camera, wherever it went. I really liked the camera work in the stairway-nice movements and good choice of angles. One suggestion I would make for that one is maybe if the intro was a bit longer( the actual movie intro, not the After Effects work in the credits-that was very nice). The chase went on for the entire song, and by the end was a little monotonous. If you had taken a little more time in the beginning to establish who initially had the bag, who wanted to take it, and maybe a brief character intro for S A M, it might have worked a little better. Also, at the end, I half expected the bag to fall down and land on it's owner's arm, or shoulder, or something. It kind of quit right at the end. I do understand, though, that the length of the song really limits what you can show, and I'm sure you wanted to get your bet stuff in there.

Overall, I though they both were pretty good.

Thanks.

I'm actually going to redo the shots in Vimy Ridge with muzzle/ blood.

only prob i have is to uncompress them, and takes up a lot of space.

For S E A, the guy in the shirt is actually supposed to be singing to the song, and at some parts the lip-syncing shows up. but the rest he was off and we didn't have time to reshoot. It was a in-school project and we had only 2 weeks, about an hour a day to do it, and im sure you know how it is when people in your group dont really care, and don't try. The theif actually had 3 different types of clothes throughout the short frown

that's about it. Thank you for the constructive critisicm, i appreciate it. THe most i usually get was "that was good/great/okay" and "keep it up" for me thats not enough

What is a bump?

I have been trying to download those other two movies ever since you posted them, but my connection has gone all screwy for some reason and I keep disconnecting. It's happening all over thaough, not just your site, so I'm sure the problem is something in my setup. When I get it working properly and get them downloaded, I will give you some feedback.

a *bump simply beans "bumping" the post to the top so that people will recognize it.

dom, for the corban intro i used After Effects 5, actually my first time with it.

the scope entertainment intro was done a couple months ago using Ulead something, and the silence thing is just a quick directional blur with a glow, nothing special, just a filler.

the rest is motion with blur, and the actual Corban title i made was in photoshop quickly.

thanks for the feedback

Hey, Cypher, I did finally get to watch Next Gen, but I am going to watch it a couple more times before I get back to you on it, 'cause I've only seen it once and I was a little distracted. I'm still downloading Smooth Criminal. I'll get back to you soon, I promise.

The .mov are encoded in Sorenson 3, which comes with quicktime 4 or higher i believe.

you can get a freeware version at http://www.apple.com/quicktime

the audio is QDesign 2, which im pretty sure comes with every Windows, and quicktime as well

try downloading quicktime 5, that should solve the problem

Hey, cypher, I finally have watched both of those other movies. So here goes: Nice job. Both of them had somewhat of a story, despite their relative shortness, and were filmed nicely. And the concepts were good. However, I think on both of them the stories could have used a little more development. This may have simply been
an issue of limited time and resources, and/or help that was not really dedicated. You kind of mentioned that with regard to your other films, and if that is the case here as well, I completely understand. You can only do so much with what you have to work with. Anyhow, here are a few suggestions that you might be able to use next time, if you like them.

In Next Generation, the only weak spot I found in the story was the very end. I assume the bears got him, but it was a little unclear. A sound effect or two here could have really helped, I think. A scream or something would have made it much more clear that the bears caught him. And while I think the hand-held 'feel' of the camera movements worked well in Smooth Criminal, giving a kind of COPS feeling to it, I thought NG might have benefitted from a smoother, tripod-type camera movement. And the police in SC didn't really get a chance to do anything, they ran for the bank, the criminal ran around the corner into another room, and the police didn't show up again. Having him run around a corner into the police would have really demonstrated how 'smooth' this criminal was, I thought. But really, these are just thing I would have done differently if they were my movies. But they weren't, they were yours, so I say well done, keep it up, and always remember to have fun. smile

thanks.

For all the videos that i have done, its 90% me.

the actors acting is as far as it went. cept in NG i had an extra camera guy because i knew this would need many shots and the only way to accomplish it in 1 week shooting, (5days) during class, so about 60 min more or less was to have 2 cameras and it worked out fine. but other than that, it's me only doing all the work, from concept to final edit.

As for the "shakyness" of NG, i personally prefer moving shots, if i had a steadicam, it would have been great, but we only had shoulder mounted ones, so i had to make due.

on top of that, i took this into consideration, and started off mainly with tripod, but than it became a pain taking up and down the stairs, so i refered to the storyboards (which i drew btw, smile ) and added stationary shots, between chases, like when the wolf calls for the bears.

btw, as for story, smooth criminal was going to be funnier (and sillier) but didn't have time because of the *@#()*#()$ literacy test which we have to write in Ontario. that really interfered.

and for NG our task was this:

to take a fairy tale, rearange it for 5 min length, and have either a chase scene or a stalking scene, and i figured the stalking scene would have been too boring.

thats it.

if anyone else would like to post their comment here for now it will be great.

i am sending the videos to Studentfilms.com soon where i will have more critique, but for now, its mainly here.

oh ya, Axeman as for the end, i had about 3 or 4 different edits of the end.

originally, when they surround Louis (the Goldilocks-type-character-guy) he was supposed to say Fu- and be cut off.

and that is how we filmed it, but it didn't look too great. so i played around with ideas and came to the one here.

still, now, i can't think of anything better frown if u can, and its good/workable, ill change it

I kind of figured most of the problems that I mentioned were more the result of circumstances than anything else. But I still think that a scream dubbed over that last scene, where the bears are all huddled together around Goldilocks, would add some clarity.

Yeah, I kind of see what you are saying. Maybe if you added some other SFX to lead up to it, like heavy panic-type breathing as he tries to get away, it might blend in better, but I'm not sure.

And as far as the shaky camera thing I mentioned earlier, I prefer moving shots too, and if the shoulder-mount was the only available way to get them, then I think it was a good call on your part to use it.
