Below you can read all about the brand new AlamDV3 interface. But first, a quick word about release tactics...

The Big Plan

The plan is to give AlamDV3, DigiGrade and the mammoth Chromanator update a two-stage release schedule. This will enable us to get the programs to you as soon as possible, while still optimising the release strategy.

Stage One
Pre-release versions of all three programs will be released this year, one at a time. They will be only available from FXhome.com and will function as a final public test period, enabling us to fine tune the programs to perfection, based on the feedback we'll get from everyone. There will also be a special introductory discount price at the start of Stage One, which we'll talk more about soon.

Stage Two
Once stage one is complete and everything is ready, 2005 will see the pre-releases going Gold. This is when the programs are put up for major distribution, the press release is sent out to thousands (thanks to everyone that helped us to find contacts), reviews appear in magazines and the new influx of users blows the roof off the FXhome webserver building.

The New Interface

The G6 interface has undergone a considerable redesign for AlamDV3. Some of you will have already seen early glimpses of the new look but the changes run far deeper than just a cosmetic face-lift.

Our previous programs, including the initial version of Chromanator, featured the two-mode interface, which required you to constantly switch between the project and object views. We were never overly happy with this setup and have worked hard to develop a new and far more intuitive system.

The interface revolution
The new design combines both views, resulting in a single timeline that displays all the information at once and removes the need to continually flick back and forth between different views.

With the new interface you can examine the keyframes of several effects at once, speeding up the work process and helping you to achieve complex keyframing much more easily.

Every item on the timeline has several sections that can be expanded and collapsed to reveal the keyframes and extra information. The toolbox also operates differently, with different toolsets now chosen by clicking on the appropriate track name on the timeline. The media browser can now display thumbnails of every imported clip, which makes it much easier to quickly find the right clip - especially as you can choose a specific poster frame using the preview pane tools at the top.

As the timeline is now displaying much more information, we have added a new feature that enables you to resize it vertically, displaying more tracks on-screen if necessary. Remarkably, despite the timeline now being far more advanced than ever before, the new code has also resulted in it being much faster - in fact, it can be up to 1000 times faster than the current Chromanator timeline!

Reinventing the wheel?
Changing the familiar interface style that has evolved through AlamDV2 and Chromanator is bound to be controversial with veteran users. However, we haven't made these changes for change's sake - every new feature is to make the program faster, easier and more productive.

Previous versions of AlamDV2 have been too specific and limiting for our liking – this is why we've focused on creating fully-CG effects and a brand new interface for AlamDV3. While the move from AlamDV1 to AlamDV2 was a fairly minor upgrade, for AlamDV3 we've thrown out the rulebook and reconsidered everything from the ground up.

The result, we hope, is a program that combines the simplicity of AlamDV2 with a professional interface and vastly superior effects tools.

Forging ahead
The other good news is that as all three of the new programs share the same core engine, the new interface will also benefit our compositing program, Chromanator, and the forthcoming colour grading package, DigiGrade. The screenshots to the right are from the co-development interface, so details will vary between each program.

Much more than a simple update, AlamDV3 will completely revolutionise the visual potential of your movies and massively empower filmmakers.

AlamDV3, a brand new Chromanator and DigiGrade. They're coming for you soon: you'd better be ready.

Excellent! That's just about enough information to keep me going... no dates, but it's gotta be within the next 2 months I guess...

The Chromanator interface change sounds classy! Can't wait to see that one! smile

And of course.. anything to do with Digigrade wink

Oh baby! That is some tastey info. Soon AlamDV and Digigrade shall be mine!

The new interfaces really give the new apps a very proffesional look. Plus the new features of AlamDV3 should launch it into a level much higher than simply a way for kids to add muzzleflashes or lightsabres to thier movies.

All three programs in Pre-Release this year....WOHOOOOOOO! biggrin

Great work guys, great work. I can't wait for the programs to arrive. And as Tarn wrote last year in a text about The Lord Of The Rings:

Tarn,

Any plans for HDV support.? I'm imagining, for better or worse, more HDV capable camcorders within the next year and despite the flame wars I think it could be a promising format.

Depending on the implimentation of HDV codecs footage will work straight away. You can be sure if there are special cases for HDV we'll cover them as soon as we can. As all the media code is made in-house now you don't need to worry about problems like AlamDV2 has with DV footage.

Schwar,

I recently read that dv footage shot in 24P is easier to edit in terms of compositing and render times. I think I understand the render times thing since there are fewer frames to render, that makes sense to me; however, I'm not sure I understand why compositing 24P would be easier. Is it because editing programs such at AlamDV, and AE wouldn't have to struggle with interlaced frames in traditional 30fps dv footage. So, if this is true would 24P footage be easier to bluescreen/greenscreen as well?

Thanks

Chromanator, AlamDV3 and DigiGrade don't struggle with interlaced footage. It's easy peasy. Just split the fields, making each field an individual frame, do the work, then recombine the fields upon rendering. It's all automatic.

Progressive footage is slightly simpler, in that each frame is full frame to begin with, so you don't have to worry about anything. As far as working in the new programs, though, the only difference is ticking or not ticking the 'progressive' box at project startup.

Simple.

Shooting 24P isn't of any use unless you're going to be converting to film and/or showing theatrically. In that case, it's very handy. But for anything else it would just complicate matters.

And you're learning Maya, riiggghttt.... But CSB always makes their products easy. Chromanator looked slightly hard, but I learned the basics in a day. But the good thing about the new products is there's room for more to learn, as I have not mastered Chromy completely, hence new tutes and me being amazed (Tron.) Dv2 however I mastered in a day.

Ah, right. 'Rough' means 'nasty' in the UK. smile

It might look a little complex, but I assure you it isn't. Shouldn't take anymore than about 30 minutes to get the hang of it all.

That looks a bit like the AE timeline, but better... and easier... and cheaper... and better looking.

Really though, it's simple stuff. Just collapse the timeline for the clip's main options. Then collapse each option for its options, and so on.

A few weeks ago, Hybrid slipped the late-night chatties some extremely vague information concerning a face-lift for chromanator. I figured it would just be changing the colors to the then 'new' colors of the AlamDV3 screenshots, and nothing more.

I had no idea this news post would be about this, I had an idea it was coming, since you usually post about every other week, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found the new screenshots. The interface looks far more professional than anything chromanator accomplished. I can't wait to work with this.

I would be willing to bet fairly large sums of money that after the press release, CSB would be a formidable competitor with some of the bigger effects software companies.

And Alam and Digi before the end of the year? That's just crazy smile

The tutorials for AlamDV3 and DigiGrade will be along the same lines as the Chromanator tutorials. I feel this is best for our international users who don't speak English. The AlamDV2 tutes were fun but not particularly professional, so we won't be going down the comedy route again. However, I'd definately like to add more video elements to the written tutorials, so hopefully I can strike a balance.

Glad everyone is liking the new stuff so far. Thanks for the vote of confidence, Marek. Let's hope you're right! biggrin

evman - you'll find when you use it that it's much easier and more obvious, and all very neat.

The new interface is so much simpler, it's actually reduced the size of the manual by 15 pages. It still does all the same stuff - more, in fact - but because the interface is so much better and simpler, the manual is also more concise and simpler.

That's right folks, the new interface is 15 PAGES EASIER!

I must say the CSB team has done us well. Kudos. smile Although, I'm still wondering if AlamDV3 will be sufficient enough for my "serious" flick. (BWAAHAHAHAHAHA! Who am I kidding?!?! Of course it's awesome!!!!)

And on a serious note: If we receive a "stage one" pre-release copy of ADV3, will we be able to get a final one? And does my "buying AlamDV2 after January 2004" qualify me for a free upgrade? And if I buy Chromanator now, am I able to upgrade my version to the "mammoth improvement" one? And about how much will Digigrade cost? Will it have a similar interface to Chromanator and ADV3? (Whhooo! So many questions! Sorry if they've already been answered, but I'm too giddy with girlish delight to read everything!)

I'm not in a position to say anything final, so the following may be wrong.. Hopefully they'll answer a few of your questions;

1) Those that recieve a stage one release of ADV3 will of course be able to upgrade as soon as upgrades to the newer versions are available. The idea is to release ADV3 to the public and to iron out any unforseen issues before making it final (I believe...)

2) As for qualifying for a free upgrade, I think it does... but you'll have to check with the big guys.

3) The chromanator update will be treated as an upgrade to the current chromanator. So yes. (I believe).

4) You'll have to wait for a price to be released officially, However Schwar said in the web chat Q&A that ADV3, Digi and Chromy will be around £59.99 or $99. "Current owners need not fear". Interface wise it will be similiar as it runs on the same G6 engine that ADV3 and Chromanator do. wink

Funny you should ask this, As I was quizzing Schwar about it recently wink Without giving too much away, it's a potent mix of Lingo and C++.

Yeah. Those of us who want to get movies out before Christmas don't want to have to continue to hold our breaths to rely on the fabled awesome powers of ADV3 for our effects. Hey! I know! Let's hope it comes out on a different holiday! Say.....Halloween? hugegrin

"STAY ON TARGET!"

This is not a place for an ADV3 release date debate or discussion. CSB have already made it fully known, that they are fully intending on releasing the first release, before christmas.

For those unable to decipher what "before christmas" means, it means some time between in the next hour, to christmas eve. ADV3 is obviously not finished, so why would you want it released tomorrow? Sit back, quit posting tripe and just wait for it. There will be more spotlights on different features... Maybe those will clue you in to when it will be released?

Don't worry, we all make mistakes from time to time.

Anyhoo, lets keep this thread specific to the recent release of information about alamdv progress and not use it for passive-aggresive complaints and/or childish bickering.

so moving on...

Evan, there is a typo however, in Happy, it says Happu.

Anywho, I think Alam DV3 will prove better results from After Effects, would Lucas consider using this... I mean, from what I've seen it looks that quality, and it is faster, right?

Are you making fun of Evman's japanese heritage?

I'd say alamDV3 is actually up to snub with what we see in the star wars flicks. You know george lucas would never use it......OR DOES HE ALREADY!?!?!?

Waser stares at Schwar. The camera moves in closer to Schwar's face as the George Lucas laugh can be heard echoing in the backround.

yeah, I realized that, but I went back to check it out, but turns out it was the font... either that or the bottom part of the y is so skinny that you can't see it.

£19.99 is the current upgrade price, so with a little conversion magic, we can assume it will be $36.8401 USD (or $44.4926 CAD if you're a loser, I mean canadian) surprised

There's an upgrade cost now? Ok, now that wouldn't upset me if those of us who had pruchased after a certain date had not been promised for what seems like years that the upgrade would be free. Am I missing a post explaining this somehwere?

Anyone that bought AlamDV2 after January 1st 2003 gets a free upgrade. Anyone that bought it before that gets the cheap upgrade price. That's the same deal as it has always been.

Well, that is if it comes out "before Christmas". Personally, I can wait, but for those of you who can't stand not knowing the exact moment, just pretend that it comes out on Christmas Eve, which gives us 43 days left from Nov 11. If/when it comes out earlier, you'll be pleasantly surprised!

No not at all!! I myself have been awaiting this ADV3 for 2 years now. ADV2 only works in classic mode for the Macintosh. When I updated and reformatted my system, I did not install classic. So, I cannot use AlamDV until they finish the OSX version. So, hopefully only 43 days left until I can make cool stuff again!!

I seriously cannot wait until AlamDv3 and Digigrade comes out. Is there anyway that we (video enthusiasts and professionals) can thank you for having the coolest idea of making these awesome programs affordable to real people not just film studios? I mean my video skills and projects have greatly been influenced by these programs and fxhome.com message boards. Kudos!

Ok, so it's December 2nd... that would mean that you have exactly 29 days to roll out these previews... I honestly don't remember when I first heard about AlamDV3. I've been on OS X for what seems like ages, I've gotten married, 2 kids, moved to a different state... and I'm still, for some reason, checking up on what I can only label, the vaporware of the millenium.

C'Mon guys, really. Why can't we just get a date here... You do realize that if Jan. 1st rolls around and a pre-release isn't out, you're gonna look pretty bad.

I've never seen so many people follow something they've only just heard about, for so long and STILL maintain a positive outlook.

Best of luck to you guys, it's 29 days and counting.

only just heard about? maybe you should hang around here more often, because we have all seen alamdv3, and know of many of it's features, and the overwhelming collective thought here is "It's worth the wait", especially from the beta team. oh how I hate them smile

It was an elaborately scripted flash movie, obviously. I knew there was something odd going on when you made me open it in IE, but i couldn't quite put my finger on it razz

but yes, seriously - as a beta tester i can vouch for its existance.

I beg to differ with you. I have seen all of those posts. They are NOT AlamDV3. They are about DV3. I doubt that anyone in the general public has actually seen it with the exception of CSB employees or the beta testers.

Wow, those are really old screenshots. biggrin

But anyway, no, the general public haven't seen much yet because it's been under wraps. However, it definately does exist and there has been extensive beta sessions. The reason you don't hear much about these is because the beta testers are all bound by contract. I can reveal that the beta testing has been going very, very well however - both in terms of showing the program to be doing exactly what we want it to do without any problems, and also in terms of the beta testeres liking the general aesthetics of it.

It definately does exist. It definitely will be astonishingly better than AlamDV2. It's definately on its way.

they are in chromy, and all the programs share the same basic interface... so yeah... maybe with a slight variation, but it should do the same thing.

Like everyone else I am doing cartwheels over the progress of the soon to be released AlamDV3 (and glad that I will be getting it as a free upgrade). My question is, is there any new information on the pricing for a package (Chromy, AlamDV3, and DigiGrade) for existing owners of your product, or even just for the new & improved (also coming soon) Chromy? I am ready to pay up now no matter what the wait cause you guys are incredible! No kidding, you'll continue to have my support because the cost v. benefit/quality ratio is off the chart and I think we (well at least me and others of like mind) should send you some bucks now . . . and like the other guy said, I'd even pay for Alam again--no joke. Thanks and keep up the good work! smile

I'm hoping when 3 is released for us, that there will be a huge neon light on fx's front page telling us about it's glorious arrival. Ahh i can't friggin wait. Oh ya, I haven't read this entire thread and maybe someone can point me out the answer but how exactly will we go about dl'ing it if we qualify for the free upgrade. Thanks guys and keep up the wonderful work.

I think they might send out a new code or something to the people with the free upgrade. Then you will probably go to the page and enter the code to get a download link or something like that. Maybe download it and then enter the code. Im pretty sure there will have to be a code.

Knowing the way chromy went, here is my prediction on what will happen:
1- CSB will send out emails asking people if they want a windows or mac license to people who have already bought dv2
2-They will send out emails with a link to a alamdv 3 key file to activate the program

What hes saying is that he likes alamdv2 very much, etc etc, and he can't wait for AlamDV3, but hopes there will be a version in german.

I'd like to quickly address customers that have been complaining about the products release date;

To my knowledge, the company haven't promised any release date whatsoever, infact all that's been said is that the company is aiming for a pre-2005 release of some sort.

That implicates no promises, the company hasn't been lying to us. I imagine the company wants to release the applications as soon as they are ready, and as a customer... I'd have them release them no sooner than when they are entirely ready for use.

AlamDV3 was to my knowledge, never meant to be a direct selling point for AlamDV2, it was meant to be a small time update due early this year but the companies plan changed and they aimed for higher things so understandably, a projected release date was broken. Ever since that date, the company have created something totally awesome in comparison to the previous line of applications. Something that I believe will surprise alot of users. The fact that AlamDV3 will still be free to existing customers is a mark of the companies good will and outright generosity. And there's no reason to complain about it...

Release dates are often broken, but for good reason, The company members have families to celebrate christmas with too and the pressure of creating such a wanted product can not be entirely pleasant.

The programs are definetly on their way, and I'm ready to wait for them. Some people that have posted really misunderstand the whole concept of a release date, and moreso how hard the company IS working. Lighten up everyone and enjoy christmas, the products will arrive soon enough.

Well obviously you don't know anything about guns.

Muzzle flashes are usually as large as the gun that created them.

Xcession wrote:

For those who need some pointers as to why his muzzle flashes are good, heres some simple rules to abide by:

1. the length of the flash should be equal to or greater than the length of the gun. Yes, that *does* include rifles.

2. the height of the flash should be at least the height of the gun, if not 1.5 times as high.

3. The resulting flash should look like a rather chubby christmas tree on its side, not - i repeat NOT- look like a squitty fart about 1cm high and 10cm long. *rolls eyes* its like you've never seen an action movie or something!

4. Use the alamdv light bulbs (of the same colour) on each muzzle flash...its unlikely that you filmed with an actual gun, so the lightsource of the muzzle flash won't be in your footage. Bulbs help recreate this to a small extent.

Although I think Xcession may be wrong on that one, as to my recollection a rifles muzzleflash doesn't equal the entire length of the rifle, but can with pistols.

Of course... unless Xcession used the term "Muzzleflash" inclusive of the more or less invisble parts of the flash which are barely visible... which knowing his talent for perfection, he did.

The pistol and the muzzleflash do indeed look magical Canta smile

p.s. "invisble parts of the flash which are barely visible..." hehehehe...

A more expensive way would be to buy a real gun.

Might hurt a bit more though.

but THEN your muzzle flashes would be perfect....

The 3d engine, "Penguin" being used in ADV3 intrigues me greatly... from what I've heard and seen you can acheive a whole mutltitude of different effects with it.

I think maybe you can but I believe they are getting past that and have a program that mostly generates its own effects. I hope that you can still use some of the old plugins.

Yes! Yes! AlamDV3 must be out by 2005 otherwise the universe will implode and I'll have nothing to fill my time with! confused

You do realise that the quote you are holding CSB to says that they hope to have it out by 2005. I really wish people would stop saying it has to be oout by the new year and that they were promised it by 2005. It's done when it's done.

"Pre-release versions of all three programs will be released this year, one at a time."

they said it themselves, its not like we're making it up
moreover, a lot of ppl bought alamdv2 for the upgrade so i dont think it's wrong for ppl to get a little impatient
we're just in period in which we don't want to work on our productions with alam2 b/c we know that a much better upgrade is in the midst
nonetheless, if they release it a little later, we can't do anything about that can we?

Um....Your only taking part of the piece of writing as your "proof." Your not "making it up" but "leaving the important bits out"

Two things:

I know that an upgrade to 3DS Max is likely to be less than a year away but I'm not putting all projects on hold until that update is released. If you have a really urgent project then use AlamDv 2, it still produces really spiffy effects (used that word twice today now) If the project isn't *that* urgent then there's no problem.

Second, you've been waiting less than a year for the upgrade, I've been waiting almost 3 years (without complaining) so I win hugegrin

Right, because Republicans never do that, right? I just find it funny that you're making a political statement on a thread about the release of AlamDV3....

Considering natural disasters and recent events, it’s certainly not as important as it seemed to me last week. But, I am starting to get an old familiar feeling here. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the release didn’t make the afore mentioned ‘out by 2005', only disappointed.

Andrew, in that sentence "Pre-release versions of all three programs will be released this year, one at a time" seems to be pretty self-explanatory & doesn't leave much open to interpretation. Don't get started in a word-fight though because no-one's going to win. I think the people who are getting impatient are just as right as the people who can wait longer.

What it just comes down to is just understanding how small a group of people are producing the programs. They did a great effort releasing Chromanator & huge respect & kudos to them for that alone. Just producing AlamDV shows how innovative & revolutionary (in a change sense, heh) they are. When I think of all this I think I can excuse them a bit of lateness - can't you?

This has been repeated over & over but sometimes it's good to remember it yet again...

Um, is there a firm date when AlamDv3 will be finished. I browsed the site in 2002 and you were working on it then. I'm surprised you still have the same old link saying "Coming Soon".

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, tercero, there is not a firm date for the release. Yet. But as you can see from the other news posts showcasing the different features, work on the program is coming along nicely, and they are approaching the final stages of development. We should be seeing a very impressive piece of software in the not-too-distant future. If you check back into this News forum from time to time, this is where any news on the progress and release will be.

I'll probably come back to this in 6 months, and see how you've progressed. Hopefully, you'll have a product available by then.

I'm not sure if anyone has asked this lately and it seems that Alam3 has come to a grinding, churning slowdown. I was wondering if there is an estimated date now that there is only a couple of things left to do. It seems that a huge chunk was done in a short amount of time and now that the finish line is in site it's running out of gas. Now i'm not a programmer so the final things might be nightmares. I'm just excited to try it and was curious a time frame. Days? Weeks? Months? Hopefully Days.

I'm really tired of checking back to see the same ole "No firm date yet" stuff. Is there any chance you guys can just email all registered users when it's ready? It just depresses me to come here anymore and find it not yet released.

I almost agree . . . it's exhausting maintaining this level of excitement over months. The e-mail might require a lot of extra time (to set up) that could better be spent on other items. How 'bout just posting "the numbers" right up front on the main page . . . to (eventually) be replaced by the word, "done"?

We do plan to email all AlamDV2 owners when AlamDV3 is released so that they can find out how to get their free key or upgrade discount. All you need to do is make sure we have a current email address for you. You can check by using the key resender. If that email address no longer works you will have to mail us at team@fxhome.com (send us your old email address, new email address, zipcode and real name)

The key resender did not work for me. My email address has not changed in over 4 years and my zip code is the same. I have emailed support with data to this effect. I cannot provide an old email address because it hasn't changed.

I am glad you posted the message though since it alerted me to a potential problem in your data base. It would have been a huge irritant if you released DV3 and I was stuck as the victim of your data base error.

I have all of the documentation (S/N), register code, PayPal receipt. Here's to DV3..How about for my birthday (4/17).

"Database error"? More likely "user error". If the system contains a different email/zipcode, its not really the database's fault for not being telepathic.

My email address hasn't changed since August 2000. My zip code has not changed in 2 years and was changed by the Postal Service. When I tried the Key Resender, I used the old code and the new code. Both attempts were logged. I just tried again using both codes. I got the message "the combination of email and zip code is not in our data base." I believe there was a major revision to the website at one point. Could it have been lost at that time. At any rate, it doesn't work.

Neither of those zip codes are what we have in our database, which is why it didn't work. The database isn't broken, it's just the the initial data provided is slightly different. I've resent the details manually.

Wow!!! I got 3 mails and responded to one of them. Oops, just got another one make that 4! Here in the states, when you are asked for zip/postal code, it is 5 digits but can be 9, which theoretically can take you to a specific house without naming the city. Apparently, the data extracted by your system includes the city, state and the zip code. I am sure you will probably have others from here in the US with the same problem.

At any rate, I really appreciate the responses. I have saved them in their entirety for future usage.

Thanks again.

Alamdv3 is, i'd estimate, 56 bzillion times better than alamdv2. Even if it were just 5 times better, why would you possibly want to use both?
