I've never found Family Guy all that funny.

Yes, I laugh in the odd place, but it's a one trick show... oh look, it's a little baby who actually talks & wants to take over the world, no less. Ha ha.

Even Futurama beats it into the ground.

I expect lots to disagree with me though. Heh.

Oh dear, the dreaded Simpsons-Family Guy Debate.....
Shall we not? They are both some of the best shows on television, but for those of you who want to rat on Simpsons, don't forget that it's been on for, well, as long as I've watched television. (scary....) Now this isnt to say that Family Guy isnt good. Heck, I saw one a week or so ago that I thought was the funniest crap ever. They both rock, capishe?

What do everyone have against Debates? Come on! Just becouse there has been some stupid detabates over the year, it still takes this forum one step further.

As Mel I never really found Family Guy good. Find it pretty dull. I have to watch a couple of episods to get into the charachters.
it do not match up to Simpsons or Southpark in my eyes, yet!

Family guys kills simpsons. Simpsons used to be funny. Now it sucks. Even when it was in its prime, I have never laughed as long or as hard on a simpsons episode, as I have on a family guy episode.

A me and a couple of my friends (including Evman) got together and listed some great shows. I forget number one, though i'm pretty sure it was

1. Family Guy
2. OLD Simpsons
3. Invader Zim

Number 4 I think was Clone High, but I can't quite remember. Anyone here see Clone High? (before it was cancelled like 2 weeks later)

My official stance is, and always has been, that both are damn funny shows. I regret where the Simpsons has gone since Mike Scully became Exec. Producer, but the older seasons were friggin hillarious. I have laughed as hard at a Simpsons episode as I have a Family Guy episode (look around Simpsons season 4), but Family Guy makes me laugh really hard fairly consistently. I don't think Family Guy is a one joke show any more than the Simpsons is. You could argue that the joke is Homer being stupid over and over again, but its the different ways that are funny, as well as other jokes they throw in there (but you have to love any time Homer and his brain become two different entities). I don't think Stewie being a baby trying to take over the world is that funny, I laugh at the hillarious flashbacks and the obsurdity of the entire show. It is really random but done just right in my mind. If you really look at a lot of the jokes, they are funny on a lot of different levels that appeal to different people. The Benjamin Disraeli joke actually made fun of that fact. Family Guy would do flashbacks of famous people that were funny even if you didn't know who the person was. there was a level that was funny because of basic principles of physical comedy, and then there was another funnier level if you knew who the person was and how that joke somehow applied.

I've gone on long enough.

The commentary's describe it this way -

Whether they can or cannot hear him entirely depends on the scene. If its funnier for them to hear him, then they can. If its funnier if they can't, then he can't. Thats the scientific explanation anyway...

I watched all of series 1 & 2, forced by a friend & not my own choice.

Is the weird typing effect we see above influenced by Family Guy? If so, then I certainly don't want that to happen to me. I will refrain from watching anymore episodes, for the betterment of my own health. I wouldn't like to place it in jeapordy

Southpark, Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy are all aimed at quite different audiences.

Family Guy seems very much aimed at english people. I'm sure many of you will disagree with that but over the last few years abstract humour has become the only ground-breaking form of comedy on english TVs. Family guy's brand of abstract/improbable humour seems up the same alley.

The Simpsons started off along the same lines of Family Guy, but was hindered by its target audiences' age. Gags were often slapstick or physical and the only thing which has changed over he past 15 seasons, is the age of the target audience. You'd never have seen an episode about Marge getting a boob-job by accident, in seasons 1-3!
The increase in age, has opened up a few more plot avenues - allowing Groening to explore marge and homers marriage, infidelity and sex. But despite this, the simpsons seems to have stagnated. There are still the odd funny bits in recent seasons, but the simpsons could now almost be classifyable under the "screwball" genre of comedy, as exemplified by Woody Allen (laughing at someone's tragic-yet-amusing antics). You don't laugh out loud, but you snigger at the odd bit here and there.
I suspect after 15 seasons we're just so used to the characters, each predicament they get themselves into gets increasingly more predictable.

Probably the largest point where family guy differs from the simpsons, is that family guy keeps up with current affairs, and with modern trends whilst the simpsons appears to have remained timeless. I think this is probably why i find FG more appealing. The simpsons has had hoards of guest characters over the years, but other than timely use of someone reasonably famous at the time of writing, very little effort seems to be put into making the whole plots of each episode revolve around anything new. The only area where updates have been made to the era in which the simpsons is set, is the addition of the internet!

Family guy also gave itself a boost, by started of aiming itself at a young-adult audience. You'd certainly never have found episodes about how bart had a huge c*ck in the first 3 seasons of The Simpsons! The Simpsons is still desparately trying to shed its 7-13yo image, so Family Guy took full advantage of the non-commital effort of The Simpsons and strode defiantly into the vacant 'adult' position.

Southpark is a whole other bag of chips, or whatever the metaphor is.
It started out as shock humour, but has branched out into highly inciteful commentary into current affairs (if you're open-minded enough to look past the blatantly inflamatory content). There was a lul around season 5 where it also got a bit lame, but season 8 has been hitting nails on the head left right and centre with some key issues in world politics...no thanks to the wealth of highly charged events in recent news (bush, war, jackson, immigration etc).
To me, South park is the antidote to everything about American culture that baffles/bemuses/astounds/shocks/insults me. I find it refreshing, even relieving that someone else (namely parker and stone) sees the ludicrous events in the same way.

Futurama again, is completely different to the others. Its always had a niche market because of its setting and plot. Certainly in the first 4 seasons, almost every episode was a lampoon of a famous movie. For me, this was the largest attraction of it, as it was fun to work out what movie this weeks episode was based upon and entertaining to see how it was warped. The almost limitless canvas that animation has in comparison to a film's budget or vision, made Futurama's take on everything it plagerised extremely watchable.

On top of this, was its obvious tech appeal. Setting anything in the future means you can do practically anything within imagination and get away with it and coupled with a huge number of computing and science-related jokes this seems to be a big hit with anyone with a slightly tech background.

In addition, the one thing of note which i couldn't say for the others, is that Futurama has excellent script writers. Although the premis of each episode was based on a film, the script was always new and is still consistently hilarious. ("My full name is Bender Bending Rodriguez").

My favorites, in order, would probably be

Family Guy
Futurama
Southpark
Simpsons
