Since alot of the talk about this one was going on somewhere else, it's about time we had our own little board on this game smile

Due out on the 16th November barring any major changes, personally I'm really looking forwards to this game and I can confidently say that this will be the best game ever after reading its reviews in some of the most personally respected PC gaming mags and otherwise recently.

Valve have been rather clever with the hype for this one, they haven't written virtual books for people to follow or throw money at the public in order to get attention, they've just shown people snippets from the game and that alone has been enough to get people very very excited.

Is Half Life 2 better than anything ever? As a first person shooter I don't really doubt it. From what I've seen of its competition...quite easily.

Who else is gonna go and grab a copy on release date and who's got one being sent to them via steam?

I got my little coupon for a free copy with my ATI card standing by, waiting to be upgraded to the Silver Edition.

And don't be surprised if a sequel to Half Life: The Movie shows up. wink

mmmmmm, tastes like good gaming

I'm not sure yet if I am going to go for the special edition with HL Source in it. I heard the only thing new in that is new water effects.

Provided it has superior physics to its predecessor that sounds cool. Though I might beat you to it wink

I cant wait, I have the silver off steam too, and a reserve for a special edition from game spot but I might sell that reserve to someone if they are all out.

What excites me about HL2 isn't just that it's meant to be a great game, but the way the reviews have indicated it's a whole new direction for games. Hopefully a big step forward for a traditionally rather simplistic and 'young' medium.

Tarn's right... as usual... it's not just the jaw-dropping graphics that's exciting gamers... it's the fact that this game is expected to bring gaming to an entirely new level, I only hope our expectations aren't TOO high!

Yes, that is interesting. In fact, it's not even been mentioned. Maybe people in this thread realise that comparing the two is a rather strange and random thing to do?

Really looking forward to HL2...unfortunately I won't be playing it until next year, when I get my new super spiffed-up PC.

My Steam download finished last night, and then I kept getting a "This Game Is Not Currently available, please try again later." Error.

Now it's "updating half life 2, ready to play in approximately 222 minutes" and dropping fast. I seriously hope this doesn't take a very long time, because I'm going to be very upset if it does. "Able to play the moment it's released" my ass...

I was nearly sucked in today after getting an early morning text message from Xcession just saying "OMFG!". I replied with "What?", thinking that maybe his whole family had died or something. The reply was quick and to the point "HL2!".

I struggled all day not to purchase HL2 - at one point I even found myself on the last page of the steam creditcard purchase form. BUT I RESISTED!

Once the programs are finished I'm soooooo getting HL2 silver and GTA:SA. Well, I will if I can afford them and I'm not living on the streets.

No, you can buy it and download it or get it on cd but either way you still have to activate it online. Today was the release day so all the people activating at once has killed their servers.

When you guys all start to play, the begening there will be one of those robo looking guys and he tries to act tuff and he throws down a can and tells you to pick it up and put it in the grabage, pick it up and throw it at him then run away, its what I did and I got away with it biggrin.

XBox blows, get over it. It's not gonna happen.

For several reasons, this is a good thing. Those reasons being;
*Playing games that rely on fast reactions on a controller SUCK.
*Playing games on a machine that won't run them properly SUCKS.
*Console specific gamers are not ready for the juice that Half Life 2 emits.

In the meantime, hey! you have mediocre shooter 2! err.. I mean Halo 2.

I think Half Life 2 may be on the next gen consoles (whatever sony and microsoft come up with, as I can't really imagine it being produced for a nintendo machine unless something drastic happens). I truely believe that this is a game that should be experienced by all, but not with the consoles current control system, I hope future consoles have a mouse+keyboard equiv.

Half Life 2 will be released by the X-Box sequel. The current X-Box is not powerful enough to run it. I will play HL2 at my friend's house. He got it, played from 2:30 AM - 8:00 Am (before school.)

Valve out a bot through the game (a perfect player, never died once, took him no time to sa=olve anything etc.) and "he" beat it in 40 hours. Dang it will be a long game. And Half Life source came out if that hasn't yet been established.

So really, if I have a mouse and keyboard hookup for my Xbox, I just have to deal with less graphical flare? Okay.

Considerring buying a graphics card that would run half life 2, rather than the GeForce 4 MX 440 that I got now, would cost about as much as two Xboxes, I'm perfectly content with reduced graphics...but not with the wait.

Unless, of course, Half Life 2 runs on a GeForce 4 MX 440, which I doubt...

So let's see here. I got:

2.4 Ghz P4
512 DDR RAM
GeForce4 MX 440,

What do I need to upgrade?

Oh, and keep it cheap. I don't want any suggestions like "Get more RAM, because that's always good", or "get a Radeon 9900 pro". I'm a college student, folks.

I have all the graphics settings on all the way and it still runs like a dream. Which is more than Far Cry or Doom 3 can say...

I've been playing this constantly since about 9pm, and I'm on the coast highway. Great great great game.

I'm not all that familar with US pc sites but this one seems decent:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=686471&CatId=933

Should play HL2 & more recent games on medium quality settings

I actually have the 5600 but if you need to watch your wallet then this one seems good if it has no catches (I don't know how US rebates work - I wish UK had similar deals)

I upgraded from my Geforce 4 MX 420 to Geforce FX 5500 256 meg card for doom 3 - major difference! Not too expensive either

It can, but why would you bother? you might as well just buy a cheaper card, since you'll be getting less power if you effectively under-clock a X800!

With a brief test earlier I ran HL2 on a good ol' geforce4 ti 4200 and it ran beautifully. 1024x768, medium settings on textures & stuff, high settings on shaders - smooth as butter. Really surprised and impressed me. Of course, I haven't got into a firefight yet, so things might change a bit once things start flying around...but initial impressions are that the tech is very spiffily coded.

Firstly, thanks for putting xog right about xbox releases.

Secondly, that's total bs. I just finished it, I'd say it was closer to 15-20 hours. Even though I've completed it, I'm so..satisfied with it right now. The game was and is purely brilliant.

btw: which is the best AGP 4x Card (better than the g4 ti 4600)?

I think it's the "go away this is a half life 2 thread" agp 128mb. wink

Go for a radeon, either the 9800xt or x800t. I'm running hl2 at full settings with a 9800 pro 128mb and experiencing little/no problems.

I think your card could still handle it though, give it a try.... the game is quite scalable..like I told tarn and schwar razz

My computer is a 2.2ghz, 1gb ram, and Radeon 9600, and the game works perfectly with all settings maxed. Anyone who's having reservations about whether it'll work or not, wait for a demo, yo. I'm pretty sure it'll work.

Although DOOM3 has better graphics, Half Life 2 is a game that finaly requires more than mindless shooting. I spent more time throwing beer cans at people then I did shooting them biggrin

I didn't think Doom 3 has better graphics than HL2. They're shiner, and more apparent, but I think everything is much more realistic in HL2, and it really draws you into the story.

I didn't think the Doom 3 shooting was particuarly mindless, Areas in Half Life are pretty similiar. But meh, I guess that's just an opinion.

Doom 3 is better than Half Life in some areas, Doom 3 had a wealth of really weird machinery that all had a certain function on mars if you looked into/around it which was really well crafted and interesting as well as a really good way of interacting with your environment, if you got close to a panel your aim target changed shape and you could press buttons on screens. Really nifty and didn't break the flow of the gameplay.

Half Life 2's lighting isn't a patch on Doom 3, but HL2 uses Shader's which make doom 3's texture look dated. The effects on gunfire are the best I've ever seen alongside brilliant facial detailing and animation that really makes its character believable. The Storyline isn't anything amazing but it's apt. The storyline to half life 1 wasn't particuarly groundbreaking or involving but it still provided 2 important factors; Suitable Longevity and Interest, the need to play again until your task is complete.

For me, few games hit either of those needs. I'm rarely drawn back into playing a game, or unable to put it down for a matter so completing games for me is normally something spread over a week or so.

In the last 3 years, the only games I couldn't put down have been Max Payne 2 and now Half Life 2. Don't misinterpret me... I love Doom 3, Doom 3 really set some great new standards But Half Life 2 blew me away.

You could say that I'm rather excited about the future of gaming.

Just remove it completely, no spoilers or links to potential spoilers are allowed. The fact that you then go on and give a reason for the screenshot just adds to the whole potential spoiler-nature of your post.

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in love with this game. I disagree with i think it was hybrid-halo about the hl1 story being sufficient. I loved it. Once I get through HL2, better believe im running HL1 source. Fighting the marines was just so much fun. Almost everything about Black Mesa is kickass from a story point of view. Yes, the begining is a bit average but it all builds so well.

hl2 is reminding me of equilibrium at presene...and thats a good thing smile

Having played it for a few hours now, I'm extremely impressed for the most part.

The opening few chapters are astonishing - and you don't even have a weapon for most of it. The sets, character animation, voicework and writing is absolutely top-notch. Draws you in brilliantly, and some genuinely funny humour that doesn't seem out of place.

After that it turns into a more generic shooter - albeit a very good one. I'm hoping some more character interaction and innovation will crop up once I've finished leaping around in this hovercraft thing.

I agree with you entirely, they've massive effort into decorating the game up, and enhancing the interactivity. For me, it is perfectly attuned between cinemetic qualities and gameplay. We all know the phrase, 'drawn in to the world of the book' ; It's the same with Half Life 2.

For example, I was in an abandoned, derelict Children's park... The roundabout, sea-saw, swings etc ALL reacted JUST as they would in real life. Simply stunning, and a remarkable accolade to Valve.

Yeah, the children's park was very nicely done. The physics were impressive, of course, but it wasn't just a gratuitous playground in which to play around with the physics engine - for me, the park was quite creepy. An entirely deserted playground, with a broken doll lying on the floor next to the swing. No children in sight. Just very depressing and ominous. That's what sets the game apart from most, especially in those early levels - it conjures up a world so effortlessly, almost subliminally.

See thats where i'm a little more guarded in my praise of HL2.

I'm about 2/3 way through at the moment and am impressed with absolutely everything. It is undoubtedly worth the 97% pczone gave it. However it dawned on me that all the puzzles i've encountered so far, and all the cool stuff, are simply a result of the physics engine.

Challenges like balancing the see-saw, raising the ramp etc ....All cool moments in their own way, all possible because of the physics...yet all blindingly obvious or easy.

In fact now i think about it - the only area where this game is lacking, is in the challenge. Its like Valve have gone a-bundle on whats possible with Havok and have forgotten that its the 'almost impossible' feats which are what made HL1 tense and playable.

Do you remember in HL1, where you had to fire up the test rocket engine, to kill that huge green-tentacled monster thing which was occupying the test chamber? You had to open the valves for 3 essential ingredients - Oxygen, Water, Fuel. To reach each of these valves took at least 2, maybe 3 hours of play. Endless retracing of steps, the need to memorise where you turned at which point and on top of this, monsters along the way. This was just one challenge of many, yet it took almost as long to complete this challenge as its taken me to do half of the entire of HL2!

Pacing back and forth over the same ground, hopelessly lost is highly irritating i'd admit. As is pressing QuickLoad 20 times as you try and make the same jump over a tiny puddle of electrified water.....but when you had accomplished it, it really felt like you'd got somewhere.

Who else remembers encountering that huge beetle-like thing with a bunch of marines fighting it. The one which stomped on the ground causing shock waves and had flamethrowers for fists. It took you at least 5-10 attempts, to kill it - you needed to leg it past it and up to that switch which you tripped exactly at the right moment to fry it. All at the same time as battleing more regular foe.

I'm yet to encounter anything which could parallel these examples, in hl2, although i'm probably still to get to the harder bits. I've been racing through the game so far, only having to reload a handful of times after doing something plain-stupid. Everything is made so obvious, the daunting hopelessness of HL1's complex level design, which made it such a rewarding challenge...is lost.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience, so far, regardless of my quibbles about the challenge. But when the game can be completed in such a short time, i've got to wonder what makes this critical difference in making it so easy.

Am i just too leet for FPSs?

how can you tell how far your in the game? I've only played for an hour or so.

Im on the part right after there's like 20 manhacks and lots of explosive barrels. I know i need to get into a tunnel that's under the grated floor with water in it, but i can't seem to reach it. I've tried stacking the barrels and ive noticed sometimes i get a boost, but i cant figure out what from...and im always just short. Humbug.

You can approximate where you are because when you start a new game, you can choose which act to start from. Normally all but the first one are blocked out, but when you finish the game i presume they all become available. There appear to be - if memory serves me correctly - about 13, i think. I'm somewhere in Ravenholm at the moment, which i think its roughly 5 or 6 acts in.

that's 2/3 in? lol

how long have you been playing for?

i remember seeing that when i started the game. I dislike that being done and I see it as very stupid. Diablo II pissed me off with the quests always been there...I knew what I was going to play, it was always in sight. here at least I can choose to not look at that menu.

Hm, I disagree with your big post, Xcession. Now, this could have a lot to do with the fact that you're a bit of an FPS expert, whereas I'm....not. So it is no doubt a lot easier for you. But bear with me...

I've only died a couple of times in HL2, and that was due to me doing just plain stupid things. From your post, that would be a bad thing, as it would imply that the game is too easy. However, I'd argue that it is because it is perfectly balanced. You see, dying in games is rubbish. It totally breaks the immersion, it's annoying because you have to go do it over again, etc etc - most games dying is inevitable due to bad game design, as you can only survive certain things by knowing about them in advance: which obviously you can't do on first play, no matter how skilled you are.

I don't really see your argument for having to reload hundreds of times and running back and forth infinately around a level...that just sounds like dodgy game design to me - and one of the reasons I've never completed HL1, in fact. It's the FPS equivalent of those infuriatingly random puzzles you used to get in point'n'click adventures, that you could only work out by combining EVERYTHING willy nilly.

Now take HL2, on the other hand. I'm playing it on Normal difficulty. And I've been on the edge of my seat the entire time. I've come close to death inumerable times, and just managed to escape by the skin of my teeth - it was incredibly exciting and exhilerating. I've run out of ammunition several times and had to work out clever ways of evading nasty things using just a crowbar. When being chased around the dock by the attack helicopter, I was always on the verge of death, so when I heard its gun powering up there was always a moment of sheer panic as I looked for cover. Sure, it wasn't so hard that I actually died...but surely that's a good thing? It came close enough that I thought I was about to, but then managed to pull something out of the bag and escape.

I got through it by a combination of skill and luck, rather than overuse of quicksaves. That, to me, is a very well designed game. Not exasperating running back-and-forth and repeated quickloading.

But, as I said, this could just be because you're much better at FPS games than me. From my POV, however, HL2 is spot-on when it comes to difficulty. It's the first game where I feel I could actually complete the whole thing without dying once, if I paid attention and was skillful enough. And that's a good thing.

I'm just leaving Ravenport now and I must say, I'm most impressed with the game...

Hell, I actually play it, even though I have to shoot at spiderish glibberish slimeish things instead of normal human beings, wich I usually utterly hate in games. smile

Well I never liked/used the quicksave method because as you say it is a bit lame but I hope that Half Life 2 is a challenge.

I also curse the royal mail for not delivering it promptly. sad

I'm definately finding it a challenge. And you can always whack it up to 'Hard'.

But, yes, it's definately 'an experience'. That's why I find it so exciting - I'm so immersed in the world.

You mean Ravenholm?
As you know, I'm a bit of an fps nut. But even on hard... the game is pretty easy in comparison to some of its competition. Though I agree the game hits a near perfect balance, the presence of certain death isn't in there as prominently as in the origional hl. The repeated reloading led to some of the best game experiences ever.

I've said before however, that hl2 is rather different to its predecessor. And in a very good way.

Half Life 2 ISN'T hard because of the FPS gameplay.

I'm finding it more tricky to work out how to interact with the game and accomplish things. For example, you have to use objects to raise sea-saws and ramps. I find it quite fun having a break from the shooting.

These aren't really spoilers, you're too used to Halo 2, a game which in saying "there's another halo" totally gives the whole story away. I could probably write a book about parts of Half Life 2 and still give next to nothing away.

I was being extremist to make (or attempt to make) a point. Ravenholm was the subject of the e3 tech demo videos as well as the video footage released just before the games release. Anybody that's paid attention knows of Ravenholms existance.

I saw no such tap.

Hmm, I guess in some instances there are more ways to get through a situation. Like here, I was being creative and didn't do it the easy way...which just bumped up the game slightly (even though its already over the bar).

Manhacks piss me off. They're like headcrabs with the slice and dice. I hate headcrabs. Like Heddy...sonofabitch ruined everything!

Done. And I can now write up a brief review with my closing thoughts.

This is the single best game I have ever played. I have no idea how Valve made such an immersive fiction world, but they did it, and with flying colors. And it blows all other FPS's out of the water.

I'm going to try not to spoil anything, by not giving out details, and the things I do mention that could be considered spoilers are shown in the videos and such, so no fear. Here we go!

No, it's not perfect, there are flaws here and there (shadows come through the walls), but it's very close. Voice acting, animations, graphics, lighting, sounds, music... all of these are superb. There were some points where it seemed like the puzzles were a bit too easy, like has been mentioned before in this thread, but even if they're fairly easy to get through, they're brilliantly thought out, and use the physics engine extremely well. The puzzles are, for me, an expansion of the puzzles in Half Life 1. I was amazed how similar some elements of the games are to one another, the puzzles being one similarity, interactivity another, etc. Speaking of the puzzles, I think it's wonderful that there are multiple ways to achieve any given task. For instance, at one point there was a wall that I couldn't scale, and there were no boxes around. I'm sure there was another way of doing this, but I just grabbed up a bunch of cinder blocks and stacked them up, making stairs. Great stuff!

In the beginning, I was completely amazed by every aspect, because this is a world that is alive. There are things happening everywhere you look, and everything looks extremely real. Once I met up with the group of rebel scientists, things got even better. It was exciting to learn what these people were doing, and exciting trying to escape from the Combine with them.

After a while of running and shooting the game took more of a turn to the regular FPS approach, but still had all the amazing aspects in it. The random groups of fighters you encounter, the fact that the sun slowly goes down and then rises through each part... The AI is what makes these run and shoot areas a challenge, because MAN that AI is smart! Hiding behind stuff, lobbing grenades, running from your grenades, hiding behind walls and regrouping... very very cool. Especially when you meet the Ant Lions and are able to use them as your own small army. That was a great touch.

I felt that once I got back into the city and met up with Alyx and Barney again, that's where the game REALLY picked up. This is not just a little battle these people are fighting, it's a war. And that is entirely obvious once you're back in the city. Even if you just sit still and don't do anything to help out, people are still fighting all around you, and this really helps create a realistic setting.

Since if I say anything in more detail I'll give the ending away, I'm just going to say that the last two chapters in this game are some of the best and most immersive story telling I've ever seen, and I was completely blown away. At one point, Alyx opens a door and in reaction to what's on the other side she said "oh my god", and at the exact same time, I said aloud, "oh my god". I suppose that's how immersed I was in this game.

The characters in Half Life 2, along with the story are what really bring it to life. Alyx was definitely my favorite character (other than Gordon of course..wink) because she acted just how I would expect someone like her character to act. And the fact that Valve has such an amazing facial animation system didn't hurt that. In Half Life 1, it's hard to feel anything for the characters, since all they do is move their mouths and blink. But in Half Life 2, the mouths move, and so do the lips, and so do the cheeks, and the eyebrows, and the eyes, and the shoulders and the arms and.. well, you get the point. You get to know these characters, and get to like them, and want to know what's going to happen next.

There's also some great humor in there, Barney joking with Gordon about how his degree from MIT is really coming in handy by flipping a switch, lots of mentions to previous events at Black Mesa, lots of really really good stuff. All of this thanks to the brilliant writers of the game, who created a completely realistic script, in my opinion.

I could seriously go on and on and on about this game, but I won't. If you haven't played it yet, I recommend doing so as soon as you can, because it's a truly amazing experience, and worth every cent.

My Rating: 9.5/10

Valve... Thank you for surprising us with my game of the year, and possibly next year... Half Life 2.

(Huh.. that wasn't so brief.)

Ps. Who else thinks that an expansion pack where you play as either Barney or Alyx would be great? Oh man... That'd be great.

You don't need to know about HL1, although it makes it a better 'experience'. But you can get along just fine without having played/completed HL1. I'm sure someone round here would be happy to PM you a quick summary of HL1 if you wanted it, anyway.

I don't know how to describe this game. It's produced a shockwave that has destroyed everything. Halo 2 is just laughable when compared to this.

Step 1
Navigate to the directory containing Steam.exe
Step 2
Then goto SteamApps/YourUserNameXXX/half-life 2/cfg
Step 3
Create a new text file and name it servermode.cfg
Step 4
In the file and the following
net_start
sv_lan 0
deathmatch 1
maxplayers (whatever you want)

Step 5
Save the file and load up Half-life 2
Step 6
Open the console and type exec servermode.cfg
Step 7
Now in the console type map <mapname of your choice>
Step 8
When it loads up open console up and type restart

www.hl2world.com has 2 custom maps but i think their site is down at the moment. but DM on hl2 works but its unstable just wait untill the real HL2DM mod is out biggrin http://www.jhgamers.com/hl2dm/

if you dont have a console on half-life 2 go to "my games" and right click on half-life 2 -> properties -> launch options and type -console

You can create HL2 servers by going in and loading a map and typing I believe netstart and deathmatch 1 in the console
something like that anyway

What is the point of even posting on this thread without giving any spoliers? If you're describing your status in the game, then you're spoiling something for someone. So is you have something to spoil: don't post.

Considerring this was spoiler free for 7-ish pages, I thought it was safe to assume it was more about game impressions, and not about ruining it for others. I wouldn't really care, but the whole rule about marking spoilers seems to have been disregarded, so when I'm reading about game impressions and graphics cards, I hit a spoiler like a brick wall, often narrowly avoiding disaster.

Just asking for courtesy, not snide remarks.

Either that or I'm rather tactfully not posting any spoilers. This is meant to remain a spoiler free thread. Duh...

And I believe that remains the rule, so Sidewinder you can stop policing that ideal as any spoiler material will be removed by moderators (I hope). Some people have convoluted ideas of what a spoiler is though, like earlier I got told that I was spoiling the game by reminding someone of something said aloud in the game on a giant tv screen in the first 2 minutes. Pay attention to the game and you'll have no surprises coming from me.

If you don't want to hear anything about the game and have been studiously avoiding games reviews or media about it to the extent that you've no idea of what Ravenholm is or what a mudskipper is then I'd quite frankly have expected you to also avoid this thread as of course, basic areas of either vehicles, weaponry or storyline will be given away in this thread through the simple course of discussion, if that wasn't the case then we'd be writing some rather silly reviews of the game (not that we haven't already).

I don't think anyone has the intentions of ruining this awesome game for others, so let's move on from that shall we?

Now, back on target;
I'm playing through the game again on hard mode, I completed it the first time round on normal with relatively few problems but I'm finding it quite a bit harder right now to the extent that I'm starting to question the gamespots criticism of the difficulty level. Maybe even my own. PCGamer complained about bad ai, and whilst to some degree I agree, the AI in areas is actually astounding. The combine soldiers act like the power hungry humans they should be. The Antlions totally rock, that's all I'm saying.

I'm still loving this game even second time round, maybe this time I feel less drawn to reach its climax and more interesting in totally absorbing my environment and watching out for then screenshotting gman appearances, throwing stuff at people, lots of stuff... it's a whole new adventure.

CounterStrike source is also, great fun. Though I say this as someone who has been playing CS for a good while so I've no real learning curve to deal with, rather I've been sent a load of noob meat for my colt grinder. The graphics aren't to HL2's standard, but the classic cs is renovated greatly and feels how it really was origionally intended; like you're actually in a small firefight. Whilst it's not exactly hl2 multiplayer... no one really played hl1 mp anyway. The new mods will be where it's at I'm sure.

Right... back off to City 17.

Sidey - don't worry too much about it, I haven't seen anything here that constitutes a spoiler as such. What has been said here doesn't even begin to give the game away, trust me: it's far too detailed for a couple of comments about locations or puzzles to spoil it.

The more I play it, the more impressed I am. It's absolutely phenomenal.

That bit when the vortigon sticks a gun on your wotsit rules.

Also I dont think talking about the thing where you have to go and find a valve to turn to raise the water is too much of a spoiler cos that happens all over the place in half life, plus its quite near the beginning, plus its pretty obvious thats what you have to do.

Sidey is just bitter because it totally pwns halo2. I don't know why certain people take offence when you point out the simple fact that it is a big let down. I have an xbox and I still think FPS totally sucks on it. I expected halo2 to be lame and it is mediocre at best.

ok, here's your warning sidey, this *may constitute a spoiler for you as it contains the progression of the game.

is ravenholm really the halfway mark of the game? it can't be...ive had about 5 hours of gametime and im in that cave area with the huge fall if you're not careful. i read someone saying the game takes 15-20 hours to beat...so there's no way ravenholm can be halfway. i've also been stuck on a few bits and have done some exploring (i think its exploring, or just ingenius plotting by the developers). anyone care to elaborate? i remember there being MUCH more in the demos that I still haven't gotten to...am i correct in assuming that ravenholm isn't the midway point? may it is chapter wise...but am i safe in assuming that later chapters will take longer to accomplish?

as well, question about the gravity gun: remember in the original e3 demo from 2003...the gravity gun had a beam where you can manipulate stuff from a distance (mattresses)...is that gone now? i can't seem to be able to do that and I was actually looking forward to it.

oh and dog rules biggrin

Sidey, it's a fact that you're the first to scream "spoiler" at anything remote related to something you don't fully understand concerning Half Life 2. Anyhows; Tarn's watching the topic so you'll be protected from any spoiler content.

Whoever rated Kid down is a chump, he gave nothing away.

Ravenholm is under half way, if you did the maths then you'd have figured that out razz In terms of chapters Highway 17 is 7 of 14, but I wouldn't class it as a halfway mark as you'll have to remember that some chapters are (significantly) longer or more difficult that others.

The gun you're talking about was an e3/techdemo only feature called "The Physgun" it wasn't anything to do with the grav gun. With the physgun you could also weld stuff together, I've no idea if it's still available with console commands - Maybe it'll pop up in a mod somewhere smile

Having played it through just now I must say: The game totally rules.

It's love to detail, completely alive environment, believable characters, top notch technical aspects, great AI and fun weapons make it a true gem in the gameworld.

Personally I'm not hopping onto the "best game ever" train, because thats not what it is to me. But it's definately a masterpiece of gamecreation and I bow to Valve for making such an enjoyable experience.

*POSSIBLE SPOILER*

After playing through Ravenholm, I thought that game was awesome.... now I'm a bit later in the game and it's truely superb. Definately the best game of all time. I'm playing it at easy, yet the AI still surprises me some times, for example, at one point I was running around outside and some combine came out from the houses down below. They proceeded to attack from both sides, and while I was fighting them, the third one used it as a diversion and creeped around to behind me. Quite stunning, for me at least.

*END POSSIBLE SPOILER*

Yeah, the AI is cool... At one point a combine threw a nade into the shack I was shooting from and slammed the door shut, forcing me to dive out a window as the shack exploded behind me, lol.

Indeed, I was fighting a particularly crafty Combine soldier who knew he was getting beaten, so he backed up (still firing) and went into a big garage, in the process pulling the big double doors shut. A moment later the door crept open a tiny amount, just enough for him to shoot through, without me being able to get a clear shot off at him.

Really rather nifty.

The best thing about the AI is the way each enemy feels completely different. Combine troops, antlions, zombies...you have to adapt your tactics completely depending on who and what you're fighting.

Yes, I was screaming...

I didn't think it was too much to ask that you don't give away solutions to puzzles without warning, or explaining what later levels are like in the game. But you say Tarn's got his eye on it, and I trust his judgement, so I don't have an issue anymore.

One more thing, then I'm done pursuing this fight:

Sidey is just bitter because it totally pwns halo2.
If you might have paid attention, you would've noticed that I said many times that Half Life 2 was going to be the better game. It was never a contest. Valve spent twice as much time on it than Bungie did on Halo. It only makes sense. I really don't know why you pursue the comparison, when everyone's already arrived at the conclusion.

I also don't see why you make it into a contest between the two games, like HL2 needs to be more fun than Halo 2 for your vindication. I live in a world where just because one thing's better than another, the other thing doesn't suck. I'm not gonna turn this into a Halo Vs. HL2 thread, so I'm not going to try and convince you to like Halo 2. If you want to wallow in your dislike of it, that's fine by me.

Amen, We had a good time on the Halo 2 mp. I'm alot less damning of it after a few good experiences, it doesn't hold a candle to hl2 but I'm not sure that actually matters at all, I enjoyed them both.

Manhacks are a total nightmare on the hard setting.

Now that you mention it, the same thing happened to me. The reason is, every time HL2 loads a new map, it resets the physics. This is only noticeable in the buggy sections (pun not intended) or when you alt tab back into cs source with bodies on screen wink

The HL2 cover says all...

" HALF-LIFE 2 Is the best first-person shooter ever - 97% PC ZONE Classic"

I've never been so impressed with a video game, it just has everything - gameplay, graphics, physics, environments, varied levels, origionality and a confusing plot (which is acutally really good, because it makes us think more about what's going on!)

Bring on the mods... (and HL3) biggrin

grrrr.... since my post was deleted because I had a problem with a specific portion of the game and I clearly labelled a spoiler, I'll just have to say that soon after chapter 13, I can no longer jump, and I need to jump to progress... Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it.
