As promised, here is a list of what remains to be completed before you can get your hands on a brand new preview copy of AlamDV3. By keeping an eye on the list you can watch the final progress of the program as it draws ever closer to completion.

Some of the jobs on the list are small tasks that will take only a few minutes, while others may take a day-or-so. As each one is accomplished, a nice green tick will appear to replace the red cross.

If the list looks quite large to some of you, then bear in mind that if we were to list the whole development cycle in this manner it would amount to over 20,000 items - we've come far and there's only a little way left to go. Beta testing also needs to be factored in, of course, but hopefully that will continue to run as smoothy as it has before.

Keep an eye out for those green ticks - once they fill the screen, the AlamDV3 preview version will be making its way out the door!

To be honest, thats a really small list. I kept it fairly detailed (seemed best) but the list I've been working on for the last 2-3 years have had like 20,000+ items on them.

I'll try and turn all this crosses to ticks as soon as possible.

This can only be good news glad to see that you're on the final stages of the programs. Ooh and now we get to see all the new features we'll be getting.

One more thing, are there any plans for another webchat now we know a bit more about the apps?

This just goes to show how such a tightly knit group we all are.

We have the Gods: or the Mods

The Nobilty: Aculag, and all the other common names.

Peasents: Like me and everyone else who just FINALLY bought a program.

Other: Like TheRenegade and what i used to be. A common name appearing on the boards, but still not a gold user.

I love FXhome. biggrin

Stupid programmer-type question: by "100% but not implemented" you mean it's fully spec'd, but no code exists yet, right?

I have to say, this is the kind of update I have been waiting for, for almost 2 years now. But I see your point, 20Ks to go through would scare people and it would be too much for some to see the end. But you have pulled it off...

I cannot WAIT to see how it will run on my Dual G5!!!

The only thing that will turn my stomach now is if I hear I have to wait even longer when it comes out just cause I have a mac... wink

I wish you all a Happy New Year by the way and I cannot wait to see AlamDV 3 in iCreate!!! I'll be writing about it!

Take care and I will keep my eyes open for your updates!!!

AWE-SOME!!!

This is great! You guys are moving at a pretty fast pace too, just a few days and a handful of checks added to the mix.

Beta testing on the Mac is right up to speed with the Windows version, so if there is any wait at all between the releases, it shouldn't be long. Maybe a day or two at most.

Have you guys who are counting noticed that some other items have been added to the list since it was first put up. These are mainly new jobs which have been completed (tick) on suggestions from beta testers but there are few new mad: as well.

Just making sure you are up-to-date. smile

IMO, I think mostly everything said from TimmyD's and Pooky's post onward is extremely irrelevant and very much off-topic.

Nope, there will be an update later today. Some new technology we've made is currently being tested which could change the render list a bit and also make the applications much better smile

I've updated the list now and you'll notice the render section section had totally changed.

Luckily its has already progressed well with nearly half the items ticked in that section. A couple of other items elsewhere have been ticked off the list as well.

The big changes to the render section have HUGE implications for the program and how you guys interact with it. It is one of the biggest advances we've made over the last couple of years when it comes to making the program faster and more simple to use - expect Tarn to make a spotlight about it in the near future smile

All of that for a "Preview Copy", I personally do not think anyone is waiting for a "Preview Copy". Why not a "To do list" for the real thing?

you obviously never had a preview copy for chromy...

They realease the preview version first so that they can get feedback from us first and make it absolutely perfect for when they make it go out in wide release. Plus, it gives us even more to look forward to.

They have said why they are releasing the preview version first, and they are even bringing us step by step along the way. Recently you've just been posting random childish comments that sound like they were written by a baby who has lived under a rock for its whole life.

They have apologized time and time again for the late coming of ADV3, and they have kept us updated this whole time. You aren't being cheated out of a program here, ADV2 does the job just fine and its a great program.

It'll be out soon enough, and that should be good enough for you.

I think the preview pretty much is the real thing.Just with a few restrictions and some little things missing that they can fix up later that don't really matter

No, it is a "done version" with new things added later, new features, and i there are any bugs, we report them and they fix it in the next version ASAP, just as evman said.

Indeed, the preview shouldn't be considered 'limited' as such. It will be fully functioning, and it then gives us the time to tweak everything to a fine degree, sort out any unexpected bugs (no matter how good your beta team is, there are some things that are only encountered when it goes out to the public), and implement extra features and bits and pieces before the big wide release.

The preview version will be an extremely powerful program. The preview release system we utilise is a crucial part of all our programs' development cycle, as it enables us to get direct feedback from those people that are using the program.

If it's the same kind of release as Chromy then the proview will be available to everyone but I'll wait until one of the CSB staff confirm this before I assure you of that.

It will be available to everyone. Anybody who wants can buy it. The advantages of being able to use the preview version are that you can have a direct input into the future shape of the program. At the preview stage, the feedback from users is the basis from which changes and improvements to the program are made, in preparation for the final release. Also, there is the advantage of getting the program quicker, before the final release, although even the preview should be a solid, quality application.

Looking at peter huish's post I really do wonder if this place is getting more unfriendly, being -1ed for saying he can't wait for the program.

Good progress guys, looks like it won't be too long now.

If you wanna talk about unfriendly, just look at Mac VS PC threads. Its a landmine for anyone too far on one side.

Lol, ironically this illustrates my point perfectly.

Don't worry about it, it's not the first time somebody's misread a post and for the record it wasn't me who rated you down (Could have been one of the yanks who probably don't have Ainsley Harriet over there....lucky them wink )

1 question for the "in the know" people, will penguin be configurable so that the snow example can be altered to represent rain?
2 and can the snow/rain be masked so that it would indicate something invisible like a person?

1: Yes. Penguin will be configurable, with the presets being a basis from which you can modify the effect to suit your needs. There should be a rain preset included as well.

2: While I am sure that you could mask the shape of something invisible out of the falling rain, I'm not sure that the rain would interact properly with it, to fully give the impression of something invisible being there. Particles will not be able to bounce off of masks, or interact with them in ways like that.

I think that displacement maps should be able to do this for you. There was a link to one somewhere...

Thanks Guys, I have seen the displacement map example before but I was thinking of something similar to the advert last year of in UK for water and has this person who was invisible but the rain reacted, by avoiding the body as if it was there, maybe there is a possibility for future enhancements in ADV3 for this who knows.

Are u guys ahead of where you would like to be or behind? And i'd for sure rather you take your time and do it right instead of it rushed and suckz. So keep up the progress and you guys kick azz. thanks

More ticks added smile (a couple more coming tomorrow as well). Been working on the file format stuff which is now nice and XML based. We hope this means that in the future we can do some fairly funky stuff.

For example - you make a preset which you want to share with the community. When you upload the preset to FXhome.com the server could read it and catalogue it according to the filters you've used and what program/version its compatible with all automatically.

Klut - You should update those number at the end of the day, should be a much better percentage.

ssjaaron - Tarn is in control of all that stuff but I think the intended release for the promo will be with the press release so not for a while.

This like the To-do list kept by my wife. I take a few things off, she adds a lot more things on. The list has no end, it keeps getting longer and longer. The red and greens don't mean anything. One step forward, two steps back.

Well actually, the list had NO checks when it started obviously. 74 and 44 is a pretty good percentage right now.

So by that logic, in a month or two, AlamDV3 will have never existed. That'll be weird. I wonder how long it will be until AlamDV 1 will be erased from history. I can't believe CSB is scamming us so.

Your logic escapes me. You are going the wrong direction. Tarn said at the beginning, many of these items are well in progress, others are very small. So, are the small ones getting knocked off and the longer ones are simmering? Tarn also said "we came up with a new technology". That is adding more. When will the line be drawn in the sand whereby it is said "Okay, this is what we go with, now lets get it working and out the door". I am not by nature a patient person, and yet I have waited well over a year. It is wearing a bit thin,. In the meantime, I check the forum daily hoping for a breakthrough.

Most of the items I've added have been ticked off very quickly. I wonder if we should do some kind of percentage as progress has been made every time the list has been updated. When new items have been added there has always been more items being ticked off (half the time the added items are ticked when they are added).

From Mac OS X, a simple script to calculate the percentage any time you want to:

-----------------------

#!/bin/sh
#
echo -n "Fetching data from fxhome.com..."
LISTO=`curl http://fxhome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16747 2>&1 | grep tick.gif | wc -l`
PENDIENTE=`curl http://fxhome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16747 2>&1 | grep cross.gif | wc -l`
echo "OK"
TOTAL=`expr $LISTO + $PENDIENTE`
PORCENT=`expr $LISTO \* 100`
PORCENT=`expr $PORCENT \/ $TOTAL`

echo "Finished: "$LISTO
echo "Pending: "$PENDIENTE
echo "Percentage: "$PORCENT"%"

exit 0

-----------------------

I have it on my desktop, so that double clicking on it starts Terminal and shows me the results. At this moment (Feb 9 - 15:41:13) they are

Fetching data from fxhome.com...OK
Finished: 104
Pending: 34
Percentage: 75%

What I said was a joke, you see. Since you said "One step forward, two steps back". Do you get it? If you went one step forward, two steps back, you would not get ahead at all, you would get very far behind, and eventually you would get back to where you started, and then even further behind that.

So, in the analogy, using AlamDV3 as a subject, taking one step forward, and then two steps back would mean they get one thing done, but then delete that thing, and also delete something else that they've worked on. Hence, eventually AlamDV3 is erased from existence.

What you mean to say is that they are finishing one thing, and then adding two. I don't think that's what's happening, but if that's the way they were going, they'd still be getting things done, and they would not be going backwards in development at all. They'd be going forward slowly. Understand "my" logic (It's not really my logic, since I just took what you said and made fun of it) now?

I've never been much of a speaker on these post or even joined in on chats. I'm more of a observer than anything. But i've had AlamDV2 for quite sometime. But one question i suppose i should ask, since i haven't seen anyone else ask, is the Macintosh version going to be ready at the same time as the windows version? Just kinda concerned. I have patience, but it's been a long, long time. Thanks.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that Mac development was being done concurrently, at the same, & that the AlamDV3 Mac release would come a few days after the PC version. The definitive answer is best left to the CSB guys, though.

Mellifluous,

Here is a Windows script (VBS) that does the same as kounch's Mac OS X script. That is, retrieve the AlamDV3 TODO list and calculate the percentage of complete tasks without having to fire up a browser.

http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/ddv/alamdv3-todo.zip

It will work on at least Windows 2000, Me and XP, but probably also on 98 SE too.

Yes, Mac and Windows development are being done concurrently, and the beta testing on both platforms has been progressing at the same speed. If the Mac version is released later, it should only be a matter of a couple days at the most; it will basically be relased to both platforms at the same time.

As soon as a couple more posts are made, the point of doing that will have disappeared. It's not hard to just click on the number 1 or the topic page, y'know.

Based off the latest beta, I'm pretty certain that you're all going to be blown away. Hopefully we'll get a news post up soon with some extra sneak peaks, then it really won't be long!

I just wanted to say that there have been a few items added to the list from our beta tests over the last week but the overall progress is still going up which is a good sign (83-84% as I write this). I've added a few more percent over the weekend and will continue to push forward this week towards our final beta tests.

On a different note I would be interested to see who would be willing to take part in an online chat session later this week (like the one we held before) to specifically discuss the lightsword clash system.

The design of this effect is causing me some headaches as the clashes in the Star Wars films are rather basic and fairly simple to reproduce but I would like to know what you guys feel you need from such an effect. The flare engine (which renders the muzzle flashes) will be perfect for this but I would really like to know what you want from it. smile

Talking of flare...

P.S. Thanks kounch/Hendo for the Windows and OSX to-do progress scripts, I've been using them myself to update the progress on the main post smile

It's going to be more than AlamDV2 to reflect the new, better features. Which is why it makes sense to buy AlamDV2 now & get the free upgrade to v3. when it arrives.

Oh yes, to answer your question, Schwar, I think it should be like the one that can be found on Ryan W's site. It should create a big glow around everything, and definately not be like the ADV2 one, which is some strange yellow circle.

Yep, the default lightsword should be a bit different, but I would just stress the maximum amount of customisabilty - with glow, saber length, colour, width, shape, transparency, & other factors (if possible).

Btw, how are the clashes going to function in v.3?

Slight change of plan, folks. Rather than doing a webchat this week, we're going to do one shortly after the pre-release is launched. That way you can all get a feel for the program and have a play, then give us your feedback. We can then use this to enhance the program for the next version. Keep an eye on the news section for details on the webchat. For the initial pre-release we'll include a standard clash effect, which we can then expand upon in future.

Relax Xcession, this is NOT 1995!!!!

But if you know anything about MacOS X, you have two kinds of appearances you can go with when you make an application. The plain and the Brushed steel. And yes Brushed steel looks like brushed steel. And yes it looks good. And no it is still not 1995. Some of us actually like it... Take the MacOS X tour so you know how it looks like and what we Mac users are talking about http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/spotlight.html

Anyway, if the interface looks like that on the photos posted today, then it is ok by me. I don't care, I was just curious, cause I was asked about how it would look like on MacOS X.

I really don't understand anti Mac people, just like I don't understand anti Windows people. They are only computers for christ sake...

Soon people, very soon we will have a kick ass application !!

PS. Thanks for the info Axeman, I needed it...

Just on a side note, I think brushed steel is being dropped slowly from many Apple application from Tiger onwards... smile

Something to fix it AlamDV3 and Chromy:

In Chromy when I do the apple+q command, the program does not exit. Just thought I'd bring it up.

I think you are right, I was thinking about that other new look Tiger has, is that no a metallic look anymore or well... I have no idea what to call it...

However you are right, for some reason, people also invented apps that can rid the metalic look of an application and revert it to an OS X one.

Some say that it is cause it is much more heavier when it is in a Brushed steel look than had it been a simple OS X one. I don't know if it is true or not. BUT, I like the brushed steel. But I like the new Tiger OS look better, however I still find applications in Tiger that has the brushed steel look.

I think what apple is doing is applying the brushed steel look onto applications only. And letting the main OS and its applications run on the new Tiger theme.

I don't know, but iLife 05 and all the other new apps from apple all show the brushed steel look. All but iWorks. ?

Anyway thanks for taking an interest in the smaller things in Mac OS X. We mac users appreciate it...

WE LOVE YOU GUYS FOR MAKING SUCH AN AWESOME APPLICATION FOR US MOVIE MAKERS!!!!!

Sorry for the lack of update. After a fairly long period of good progress we hit on a small problem which we have been working on to find the best sollution. It was basically a question of raw speed vs functionality - we've got there now (and with hardly any compromise) so I hope the progress will continue at its previous fast pace.
