Time for the next challenge I guess. This is one for all you agressive butch types:

Weapons

Usual rules apply, weapons can be real or made up, any tutorials/plugins used should be mentioned (Only if the tutorial is "How to make an mp5" or something, general modelling tutes don't need to be mentioned). Don't go turbosquidding for models or anything silly like that.

Show WIPs if you want (they're always interesting) and the final date is

January 31st

Have fun.

Oh and for all who are interested, the last one was a draw between JamieC7 and myself (hooray!)

Oh come on Klut, it's not *really* a serious thread, just a bit of fun. And anyway Ben can't win as Paint is not recognised as a 3D app so everything is good.

A quick WIP of mine:

The topic really is open to interpretation so if you can link your model to the topic in any way it counts (as long as you don't have something really unconnected.) But bombs certainly count:

Bombs, guns, swords, axes, bows and arrows, knives, mortars, tanks, blowpipes, rocket launchers, grenades.... the list goes on and on.

45 minutes to render! How many segments has that sphere got??

I've decided to completely start over again and try and make a more accurate model of a real gun (that one was bits from an M16 and a M4).

Oh and ssjaaron, I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to gun modelling so mine might go horribly wrong before the end! biggrin

Oh and yep VFXGuy, I love GI, who doesn't? smile

I think you'll find that the only person that decides what I find funny is me.

These topics are created for people both new to and experienced with 3D to have a crack at making something with a monthly theme and to have it critiqued. This is not a thread to be raided by spamming infants.
Whilst Ben may be forgiven, this is not a thread to be filled with silly posts.

Okay, okay. You misunderstand me. I was speaking to a general audience about the funny-ness, then to Atom about changing his post. Sorry if something got lost in translation.

There is nothing unprovoked about you posting something totally stupidly, and me replying negatively to it. If I think something is right out of place in a forum or thread I will say so, this is not something limited to you.

There is no need to spend aeons searching for a term, that describes something perfectly as it is.

Argueing stops right now, if you wish to post something not worth the time reading and totally unrelated to 3d go to another thread.

45 minutes is still a ludicrously long time to render considering my piece of 3d rendered with radiosity took under 2 minutes crazy

It's an M16A1, I just hope I have time to finish it.

If you haven't posted any WIPs yet, what are you planning on modelling? I'm just interested to see what we can expect.

I just thought I'd drop in a suggestion to everyone. Spend lots and lots of time getting your model to look as perfect as you can, don't just rush out with one that "will just about do". I say this because my first WIP in this thread (which was a bit rushed) looks no where near the level of my redone version even though the new one is taking far longer. Really just don't post up final renders until you are 100% happy, there's loads of time till the deadline so there's no need to rush.

I know it's an obvious thing to say but it's a mistake I've made and maybe other people have as well.

Oh and good work Hybrid, Ryan and Redhawk (and Klut's is getting there biggrin )

Update time!!!

Just finished the sight which ended up a lot more complicated and fiddly than I thought it would be and added some more bits and pieces.

Here's a fantastic place for gun reference pics as well:
www.modelguns.co.uk (it can be a bit ahrd to navigate due to text overlapping and stuff.

Not really... Rawree is just tracing a picture of a rifle.

To Win the 3D challenge what you create doesn't solely need to be visually nice, but also creative. Modelling a standard Issue American Rifle with the word "Weapon" as a theme doesn't strike me as creative. Regardless of how good Rawree's modelling is and as far as I am aware, always has been. razz

It really depends on how you approach 3D. If you approach it like an observational drawing then you'd want to get it as close as you can to the original. If you're "drawing from imagination" then you want to be as creative as you can (yes you are still meant to be creative when drawing from life).
Really this was a chance to prove to myself that I could build one of these things (I've tried fruitlessly to model complex guns before).

But I certainly agree creativity is important, that just wasn't my aim. razz

I've no problem with that at all, I think your modelling is of a very high standard. But this is a competition where I believe Creativity is as important as accuracy. Else everyone would be modelling rifles, musical instruments and such.
Maybe in the future, you should make the stimulus more ambiguous and open to interpretation razz.

Yeah the challenge is still going on (the end date is on the front page of this thread).

Hybrid, I was hoping that people would be able to model all kinds of weapons and maybe interpret that to be something more than just "A Gun" (as you did) but it seems that it wasn't open-ended enough. In the future there will be more abstract words rather than specific topics but once in a while it's nice just to have something more specific to model.

My Submission was actually a model of the human brain.

I was bored, so I created this simple Lightsaber:

Application: 3ds Max
Modeling Time: About 30 minutes
Render time: 2 seconds redface

It's very intresting that it probably would look better in AlamDV. smile

EDIT: Does it work now? Thanks Serpent!

Click thumbnail to view bigger.

Program: Cinema 4d
Time: 1 hour
Rendered in 3 seconds

Background was found off of google.com.

This gun is completely original, I got it from my head, no images what soever. Textures were all made by yours truely, no presets used (except I used a shader on te text.) Not my best, but you know.
