Is there a way to blur or smudge a key to acheive a nice smooth blend between layers? I tried using box blur but it didn't really work, I just got a black ring where the blur should have been.

Im looking to feather I guess is the term. Any help would be great and I can post pics of what I mean if need be.

Try using box blur and rendering it out, if you havent already. That might work.

You can use the "Box blur Alpha" tool to blur the edges around your keyed subject to feather the matte.

I treid both of those suggestions and it just looks like a semi-transparent black shadow.
