Well, well, well, people, your favorite rascal is back again with yet another proposition. I was rummaging around the internet, and came acroos the site for the upcoming movie "Be Cool". As I looked through it, I found this contest. The contest is:
Make a 5 second video that'll impress judges from "the business". There's no current theme, or restrictions, they just want the "cadillac" of 5 second videos. (Aint that great product placement?) The winner will be notified and awarded a......oh, yeah....cadillac!

Here's the site link to the contest http://www.cadillacunder5.com/presentation/siteindex.html?

Thats pretty crazy but 5 sec is really no time out all. You cant easily tell a story in that much time, but hey its only 5 sec. Upon watching some of the entries some are interesting but most are just stupid in my oppinion. Interesting contest to say the least (and even more interesting to see the winner).

It's that negative thinking that'll lose you the contest, man! smile 5 seconds is plenty of time to tell a story and show how creative you are with it. Look at some of the films on the site and you'll see.

Yea I dont want to be negitive and probebly the only reason I think its stupid is because I dont think I could do a good job.

Dennis & Ronnie Films is entering this. But if we win, we're selling the car for funding. We don't plan on winning though, but it'll be a huge challenge to make a cohesive "story" in 5 seconds.

Atom and Serpent, and anyone else under the age of 18, sorry to burst your bubble, but unless you're 18 or over with a valid US driver's license, you can't enter. It's stated in the second paragraph of the rules. Rules and limitaions should always be read when contests are involved.

No, I don't think it is.

I will be entering this contest as well. I dont expect to win grand prize, any of the 5 first prizes, or any of the 15 runner-ups, but it sure would be cool.

Good luck to all that are entering. And if I DID win, I would sell the car as well. No need for a 19 year old to have a 55,000 dollar cadillac.

Why would you? If you win something, no one else has any right to it. It's yours. Unless you're feeling generous, but I'm not generous when it comes to that type of thing.

Maybe there needs to be a poll on what people would do with the cadillac should they win. It may be interesting. It can't hurt to dream a little... smile

Let me give you my friend's example. It is sick and you will see why. And I am not doing this, it is very stupid and offensive. Here goes: A 2-3 year old girl falls on her knees and gets a cut/scab or w/e, grandma comes over and says "whatever diesn't kill you makes you stronger, and she says "except AIDs. Things like that.

We just submitted our entry today. Since it's almost the end of the contest, I'll post what we came up with.

http://www.0tastudios.com/cadillac/cadillac.avi

Since the winner will be shown with Cadillac's commercial that will be displaying their line of cars with a 0-60 time of 4.6 seconds, that's exactly how long we made the video. We also thought that maybe we could pitch them the idea "Next time you want to go 0-60 in under 5 seconds, drive a Cadillac" or something like that in the unlikely chance that ours was chosen.

Thanks Rawree and Atom. How many other people here entered this? I'd love to see some of the competition.

To answer the question that was asked about what people would do with the cadillac if they won... I would sell it, after giving it a good testing of course. There were four people in my group, so that works out to about $12,000 a person if we were to win and sell it. Not too shabby for a couple days of work.

The only thing I dislike about this is the fact that it cuts off right in the middle of the scream. I prefer things that "end", so to speak, but it was still pretty cool.

If I had done this, he would have just whizzed by the camera, the scream fading in, then out as he went past. Not my movie though. wink

Maybe it's just a problem with your browser. Have you tried from a different computer?

My guess is that they got all the entries they're going to take. But in that case, it would seem that they would have changed the page to say that.

That was good, but with so little time you need every shot to work and be understood, and I don't think the last shot of LtMcMurphy coughing made sense.. I was expecting some witty punchline or something...I dunno, it seemed to have no conclusion, IMO. Still good though. wink

CX3, I'm going to say that I really disliked that. I'm sorry, that logo thing at the end blew it big for me. Heh. Would have been cool if it had ended differently.

I think the biggest problem with the 5 second timeframe is getting a good ending. As Ben pointed out, every shot needs to work, or the whole thing doesn't work. In some of the examples in the Film section of the caddilacunder5.com website, there are a couple of movies that really work because they have a definite beginning, middle, and end. But most of them don't.

It'll be pretty interesting to see the winning film.

That's why one's on the site like "Intern" and "Late" are good, but the one where the guy's looking at the beach in his office isn't good because there's no ending, it just cuts in the middle.

CX3, I thought yours was good, and the cadillac logo was clever, but I didn't really see any overall purpose or meaning to any of it; which is what I was kind of 'self-judging' the clips on. Also, I felt that if you had some more active, 'swervy' camera angles, like in the fight in the AfterDark commercial; rather than the more static shots then it would've flowed better for me. Just my opinion though. It's not as if I could do better.......or could I? biggrin

EDIT: Did anyone realize that "Be Cool" is the sequel to "Get Shorty"? Same characters, similar poster art, same story premise. How cool.

Yeah when my friend Woo falls down from getting slammed into the pillar he was sposed to get up and his fists were going to be glowing and shape a symbol. I saw it once on this old anime cartoon. But when i found out we missed the deadline, I didnt add his effect and said screw it. So that might be why my symbol looks out of place. But, like i said, we missed the deadline ha, doesnt matter if people really liked it or really hated it.

Aculag and CX3 yours were both good. I liked them

Here is mine that I shot one morning alone, though it doesnt compare to your's.

One thing I really really regretted on mine after I submitted it was the music. I wish I had used sound effects rather. Oh well, never expected to win.

heres my entry, could have been better but i made it about a day before the contest. if anyone can tell me how i can improve it that would be awesome, i want to make a slightly longer and better version for my portfolio.

http://videos127.tripod.com/finalweb.mov

should the brightness be pushed up a bit or is that just me?

Ours are not near as exciting as the others have shown. Pretty boring actually. smile Here is what we submitted:

My Dad submitted this:

"Ben"
http://www.josh-j.com/mov/ben-final.mov

And I submitted this:

"InstaGrocer"
http://www.josh-j.com/mov/InstaGrocer.mov

It was fun to do even though we knew there was no chance of winning...

Enjoy...

Josh, I like the soda one, really effective FXs but still not much of a "story"

but there's really not a whole lot that can be done in 5 secs.

I wish they would post the finalists already like they were supposed to do by Sunday night!

No, no, no. You must've misunderstood. They notify the finalists on 2/20. They don't post them until later.

They notified the top 10 in each genre on 2/20. However, they do not consider those 50 people to be the finalists. The finalists will be chosen from those 50 on 2/25. They first have to get forms signed and faxed by the creators of those 50 videos so that they are permitted to show them. That's what the wait is for.

Here's the one I entered. http://www.peerlessproductions.com/movies/FoolishCourage.mov Pretty much assembled it from a shot I made for Mechanical Mayhem.

GREAT entries, shapiro and CX3 (too bad you missed the deadline!).

The vast majoity of the finalists are awful, and I must say I'm very disappointed in the tastes of the judges.

I'm also extremely disappointed in the finalists. I think that the videos that were posted here are much better than some of the ones that were chosen. I was expecting some really amazing videos. Honestly, can you really see Cadillac using a video that ends with a guy having a bullet hole in the middle of his head, or one that says "you will get lucky... in bed"? I don't think that those ones should have even been considered.

IT obviously could've been better, though. And, yeah, the finalists were: *atom sticks his tongue out and spews* PTFFFTTHHHH!!!!

What none of you seem to realise is that they're looking for "the cadillac of 5-second shorts"

Which means unreliable, resource-hungry, and needlessly massive biggrin

Well, it fits an Escalade, but thats 'bout it. We inherited a 2002 deville a couple months ago, and it's the most smooth-riding, fuel-efficient, and luxoriously-compact car I've ever been in.

I'm a fool then, because our car is very compact.

Nah, my mom actually inherited it two months ago in her elderly employer's will. (Kinda really unexpected) And well, it's awesome. (2002 Deville) Leather (heated) seats, rear view sensors, and electric-everything. (Even the seatbelts have automatic adjusters!) It's so frickin awesome. Once you go 'Lac you don't go back!

I must agree. I was very close to getting a Cadillac but opted for a Lexus instead. Can't beat Japanese engineering!

The newer Cadillacs are turning out relatively compact.
