For my upcoming movie I need shots of a big city with cars going down it's busy streets, shots of cars driving, and just city life. I obviously can't shoot this so I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get some free stock footage of some of this. It would really help me out.

Well Timmy I have been to New York City and I have taken my camera and I did get footage. Unfortunatly it is not what I need. I need this for the begining scene in my new movie. It is about a hitman and it is talking about every day life. It'll have some statistics about how many people die per day and go unnoticed and different things about the lives people take and how unnoticed they are. Except one man notices everything. Then it'll go off to show him etc. So for those scenes I wanted a wide shot of the city and some taxi's going by and people walking down the streets and just people carrying out there lives. Maybe some shots of business men walking to there jobs then someone on a street corner painting a picture. Stuff like that.

Atom, I'm yet to see you post anything that offers advise, you either post crap or post about Timmy. Lay off him, he's 12 but not stupid (as far as i know wink)

But as for the original question before the spammeth stepped in, I'm in the UK and there arent many citys around here like that, but if you want people walking around i'm sure you could do this. Most people have a city somewhere near them, if not then unlucky and i hope you find what you want biggrin

While I am sorry I spiffed at Timmy, I have to say I don't think my posts are crap. And I've only poked at Timmy a couple times in the past few days. Not the entire time I've been here.

And, AcjPics, I happen to have quite a bit of city-looking stock footage that came off some 3rd-party software I got. Gimme a day and I can post it up.

I don't understand why you can't shoot the footage yourself. If you don't live near a city, thats one thing, but if you do, just bring your camera and start shooting everything in sight, that shouldn't be a problem.

I apologise, i must stop posting on here in the early hours, my attitude sucks! But i must admit, the last several posts i've seen from you aren't helpful or tidbit at Timmy, but that's probably just my bad for only seeing those posts.

Nice of you to offer the footage you have though so back onto the correct subject....

If 320x240 is okay, I recommend http://www.freestockfootage.com/index.html . They offer the low res highly compressed stuff for free. However, it is very low res and very highly compressed. You can buy the bigger stuff.

Well I don't live near a city big enough for what I want. I live near a college town so I'm gonna get a few shots here and there but I wanted some bigger stuff. Yes this project is going to be completed. I don't start on something and not finish it. I put a lot of thought into it then I start it I don't just start things on a whim. Atom that would be great if you could post the stuff it would really help me out. Thanks a lot for the feedback guys.

I have 33 seperate clips of random New York city life, and 24 clips of random rush hour in a city. All of which fit the criteria you posted.

The footage is 720 X 486 and would work with what you want quite well. The New York files contain shots of people going about their daily buisness, as well as pans of the cityscape and landmarks such as the Empire State building and Grand Central Station. They all vary in length as well.

I'm furiously copying it all off of DVD to my hard drive, so I'll have them if here if you want me to send them. I don't have anywhere I can post, so i'll have to send them to you via FTP or something like that, as I have several gigs worth of the footage.

Timmy, as much as I respect copyright law, and the respective owners of copyrighted things, I must say:

Get off of peoples backs about copyrighted material. Seriously, you're only twelve, and if someone offered you that footage, are you really going to run such a high profit on whatever it is you are doing that the "owners" of it are going to spend thousands of dollars to find you and put you (a minor) in jail? No, they won't. So, in all fairness to both sides, if he's offering it. Let him offer it. It's not like you are going to arrest him.

Or are you? *Dum-dum-dum!!!!*

Hmm, If you don't know what an FTP server is, odds are you don't have one up and running. Is there any way you know of that I can get these files to you?

I'm trying to get rid of un-needed clips so the files won't be so large (file size). A few questions may help narrow the number of clips down.

1) These shots happen during the daytime I assume. Do you need night shots of New York?

2) I have a pile of skyline shots, but they all contain the World Trade Center towers, which would date your movie. If you don't need those recognizable icons, or skylines in general, then it gets rid of quite a few shots.

3) Are these shots going to be of New York, or a random movie city like New York? If they arn't New York specificaly, I can eliminate the ones that contain well known icons like the Empire State building.

Um well the shots are of a city like new york. And you can get rid of icons like the Empire State Building and stuff. And i want a few skyline shots but not a ton so you don't need to send me all of them. Ok well in sending it to me. Ok my dad is the principal at our school so I have acess to our server. Could that work at all. Or I know you can send files through AIM if that works for you. Um I can't think of anymore internet ideas if you want to send them through AIM my screename is LilCaesars21.

Okay, thanks.

I've got it down to 10 clips which comes to 563 Megs. One of them is a skyline shot, with the World Trade Centers being obscured by a bridge, so you can only see the bottom of them. Paint one of them out, and it will look like a generic big city skyline shot. smile

I don't have AIM, but I have MSN messenger if that helps....

You guys could try http://www.archive.org if you don't mind older public domain footage.

more current shots of various cities can be found reasonably cheap at http://footagefirm.com (actually you can find these on ebay cheaper - search stock footage)
