I need I laptop for school and I have very limited access to the internet right now. I don't have time to search for a good deal so I need your guys help.

I have about $3000 I can spend on a laptop that I got from a contest. I don't want to spend all the money though. I am wanting to stay under $2000.

So here is the deal: Whoever finds me the best deal for under $2000 gets 50 force points transfered to them (maybe more smile ) and I will rate up your posts.

If you are wondering how I got $3000 from a contest go to www.ducktapeclub.com/contests/prom

thanks,
Kris

I would say get an alienware laptop. You can get one with pretty much everything you could want for around $2500 or less.

What exactly do you need in your laptop. Is it only going to be used for basic word processing...or will you be playing dvds, games, etc..

If it's for the basics, I don't think AlienWare is the best company to go with. Their systems are usually for the high end.

Don't go for powerbooks, they're awfully slow and overpriced. You can get much better PC-wise and much more powerful too.

Glad to know you won, BTW smile I remember that thread from a while ago asking for suggestions.

He is only looking to buy a "laptop for school", not a desktop computer. cool

Anyways, I like Dell and they often have great deals. This one ends tomorrow, however, new deals are always perpetuating.

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/2x_inspn600m?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

For your gaming needs: http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/inspn_9200?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

I'll keep searching for some more, but that looks like an awesome deal right now.

I remember that thread too and I voted like a million times. I also remember that request you had about a program that can type enter and then type alt + left keyboard key to automatically vote for you and then refresh.

I still have that...

Anyways, TigerDirect's a cool site as well.

What exactly are you looking to do with this notebook? The most important question is do you plan on playing games on it? Finding a low price on a laptop with a good video card in it can be a problem sometimes. If you don't need anything special when it comes to the video card though, then it'll be simple to find something in your price range.

I would avoid buying an alienware. I'm sure that there are plenty of people who have one and are happy with it, but from my friend bought one about a year ago and has had nothing but problems with it. It recently died completely, right after the warranty expired on it. But then again, this friend has had bad luck with most computers that he has owned, so it may just be him.

I've always been a fan of the Sager laptops and the Acer Ferrari line. Are you looking for an Intel or AMD processor?

In my opinion, the Acer Ferrari 3400 is an excellent deal. It has an Athlon 64-bit processor and an ATI Radeon 9700 video card, along with some other nice features.

If you don't mind going slightly over the $2000 mark, then I would take a look at the Sager notebooks. Once again, I'm not sure if you're looking for an Intel or AMD, but you can get either in one of their 47xx series notebooks which are customizable with either an Athlon 64 or an Pentium 4 processor. Both options include an ATI Radeon 9700 card.

Hope this helps you...

Yeah, I'd be wary of Gateway. While I'm using equipment purchased from them right now (and it works great), they have the WORST customer service. I had one minor problem, easily fixed by most companies, that took three months to resolve.

Just my two cents.

I would recommend you go for only those laptops which have Pentium M (Centrino) processor, because they give a lot better battery life as compaired to P4's...

How does the speed of those compare though?

We made it out of duct tape. (is that what you mean?)

Well, not quite the best, or most reliable, but if you want a major-brand tag, there's always the Dell XPS. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/brand/inspiron_xps_gen2?c=us&l=en&s=gen

(And it's pretty-lookin' smile )

What is up with you and hating good computers? Alienware computers are very high end computers. Sure, their prices are huge, but they are in the highend zone as far as laptops go... What do you have against them, just curious? Because I wouldn't want to go buying a piece of crap laptop (which I am sure it isn't.)

That IBUYPOWER notebooks R good. But the bad thing about it, it has a mobility radeon card. I've very bad expierence with it. It is a card from ATI. But a laptop isn't for games, pure 4 work.

Well, suc6 with it

BTW: If you take dell, I think that's a good choice !
