AlamDV3 beta update

Testing and progress on AlamDV3 has gone well recently, with the last big section of the program implemented for the preview release - the Penguin particle engine. Being able to create particle effects from scratch in the program is extremely exciting and gives the AlamDV series a real boost, opening up all kinds of new effects possibilties.

Following the results of the TFN lightsaber contest, we are tweaking our lightsword system slightly to make it even easier to create the preferred type of saber and achieve even better results. This is the kind of development we will continue to do throughout the program's life, as we get feedback from users on what you want to see.

We're close. Very close.

Here are some fun new clips that we've put together during testing:

The Lightman
Unhealthy smoke
Snow prototype
(all divx)

DigiGrade postponed

While AlamDV3 is just around the corner, there is unfortunately some less good news. As some of you will already be aware, we have been concurrently developing three video post-production programs for a long while now - Chromanator, AlamDV3 and DigiGrade.

AlamDV3 and the updated version of Chromanator are progressing as planned, but we have had to put DigiGrade on the back-burner for now. Development costs on each program are huge and DigiGrade's creation now depends upon the success of Chromanator and AlamDV3.

We are still committed to creating the most advanced and affordable digital colour grading package in the world, it's just that it's going to have to wait a while!

Everything depends on sales of AlamDV3 and Chromanator - so be ready to spread the word!

Good Stuff Tarn, the particles are looking rather spiffy and I imagine will be a great feature of the program.

The star of the show however, has to be the Lightman, best use of freehand sabers ever. smile

Great news and great clips. Lightman looks fun, and the particle examples look as good as those I have seen in 'traditional' effect programs such as Aftereffects and Particle Illusion. I hope that they, with a bit of time and skill, can produce other effects that these programs also currently claim as their own?

Would it be possible for Penguin to create something that looks like this:

Where the smoke would come up from the ground and then you could have another emitter create the explosion?

Oh yeah, they said they would and they did deliver in the news... This AlamDV rocks!

I cannot wait to see it in action on my machine.

I know %98 can stay idle for a few months if need be, but when we get to %99, I hope we get a release date... Cause this is an insanely cool application. People need to know this thing exists and the Mac and Windows magazines need to look at it so it can have the success it deserves. And then DigiGrade will be saved (and then some).

I wrote an article on AlamDV a while back when the news hit about the OS X version, I am also working on a new and longer report on AlamDV for a magazine I cannot yet tell about, cause I don't know which one will print the story yet. As I have not much if anything really useful to tell about AlamDV 3 yet, I have chosen to wait till I get the fresh upgrade in my hands.

Anyone who also write for magazines or actually work for one, please do these guys a favor and mention this to the paper, magazine or convention. There are a number of Mac based conventions and gatherings near where I live. I have thought about making promotional material for AlamDV and the FXHome.com team. Just to get people involved. And this is only on the computer front. My main work and interest is in Films, and in that business the meetings, gatherings etc, are a whole lot more of than for Macs and PCs. Once again, at these places we can boost FXHome into the minds of new customers.

This is my hope. I think we can pull this off. So while FXHome is working hard on AlamDV3 and other apps, we should try to find creative ways of promoting AlamDV3 and FXHome.

Banners, stickers, T-shirts you name it. This will be our way of showing appreciation to the team and hope we can help in making this place a dream for all Movie lovers and those who wish to join our community.

Post your ideas and FXTeam, you let us know when we can start publishing them. That means when you think we are close enough to a release and (this applies only for AlamDV3) when we can release our materials.

If people are willing to give a give a hand in this promotional event, please post your interest here. Also, if you need any help let me know, I know a few places where we can make make most of this happen.

Let us give back to these guys... They have worked hard to make our and well as their dreams come true...

PS. Hey I was a part of Save Farscape and great things can happen when we get organized. SO LET'S DO IT! biggrin

Sisko kid, you're a genius.
Thousands of fxhome users have their own independent websites where they post their latest movies and effects projects. While very few of them are seen by a larger target audience than their local friends, if you combine the marketing power of every single website, you have quite the out reach tool. Why not create an awesome, visually stunning flash presentation that fx home users can post on their websites to hail their thanks and credit to CSB digitial, or ALAM DV II and Chromonator in specific. My website is garbage, as I'm only starting as a film director, however two of my friends have already expressed interest in buying a CSB digital product, based on what they saw on my website. I believe one has bought chromanator already. My point is: if fxhome users had an awesome flash presentation advertising ALAM DV, we would post it, if we posted it, people would watch it and many would buy ALAM DV, and if people buy ALAM DV, we get Digi grade. *in best napoleon dynamite voice* "Yesssss...."

Just a thought
-if somebody's already thought of it... redface sorry.

Tarn Calls the Shots *holds horse*

Thank you for the kind words...

I am serious about this, I hope people will see this, can and will help FXhome in getting noticed all the right places. A who can say no to free press, when it is all good? wink

Ok, if people are willing to join let us know and we can set up a topic to discuss this in detail. If all you can contribute is sharing a banner on your website or make one for that matter, it all helps.

I for one, am making a few T-shirts I will wear that will be pretty cool. Stylish enough to make people ask, who or what it is and still be interested in it as though it came from Nike or something like that.

Let the community share the experience and who knows, one day if you meet another fellow FXHome user, you might spot him or her on the street... Who knows. All I know is that it is time to get the word out on the street.

Now the only thing would be if FXHome would object to this. If not, then let's get started!!

Ok well I have recently bought Chromanator and from what I've seen of alamDV3 thats a given that I'll buy that too. For me digigrade was not top of my list and it's the right choice to pick that application for postponement. I'd expect the other two apps to sell more copies by far....mind you I might be wrong. I for one would be willing to pay a little more for alamDV 3 or even for the upgrade of chromanator. I only bought that about a month or so ago so i expect I'll qualify for any free upgrade path there might be on that one....not so alamDV as my copy of alamDV2 is from a long time ago. Personally though I for one would be willing to for go any free upgrade if it helps these guys get financially back on track. Maybe instead of fre upgrades a three tier pricing might do the trick. I know plenty out there have bought recently on the strenght of a free upgrade and are looking with horror at my idea but hey, if you want upgrades and new version in the future these guys have to stay afloat. You get £500 packages from these guys for a tenth of that price. Maybe those that get free upgrades could be given an option to pay say £10 for the upgrade instead. You choose free or support the guys for the future. We'd soon see then how many who post on here really support fxhome and those that are all talk

Thanks for all the replies and support, guys. As usual, your enthuasiasm is what keeps us going!

Sisko Kid's ideas are all great, but this isn't the right time to start a big fan campaign. We only get one shot at this, and we're saving up all our ammo for the full release, when we'll be pushing AlamDV3, Chromy and FXhome as hard as possible.

The preview release, on the other hand, is an FXhome.com-exclusive so that regular FXhomers can get their hands on the program. Lots of enhancements and tweaks will be made between the preview and full releases.

When the time is right, we will organise materials such as website banners, t-shirts etc that people can use to help promote the new products. In order to ensure it is a coordinated and directed campaign, we will organise it ourselves - that way we can make sure everything is official and how we want it.

For now we ask you to hold your horses. There will come a time when we'll need all your support like never before, but until then we should concentrate on getting feedback from the preview release so that we can make it into the best program it can possibly be.

Having said that, feel free to reply with any ideas you have for FXhomer-based promotion - brainstorming ideas for future use would be very useful.

wow it's begining to sound like the final battle in an epic film! I agree with Tarn. I think that we should hold out until we've all gotten a chance to use Alamdv3 and Chromy. That way we would be able to at least give ideas and maybe even get permission to create promotional items (since Tarn said that he wants them to do promotion so it's organized). Although, Tarn, I truly believe that you need to get word out as soon as possible after the release because first of all it will take a while for news to reach a large amount of people (giving us enought time to try out the programs). By then you would have enough time to create banners, t-shirts, presentations and, if i may suggest, we could use a store. Rake in money from more places than one. Sell t-shirts here! Create another section in the store where people can buy more than the programs. You can even make those novelty "livestrong" type bracelets that say FX-Home on them Alamdv2, Alamdv3, Chromanator even. There are many things that i could think of that you could put a store for FX-Home. I can't wait for the new programs guys! great work.[/quote]

This is just so great...

I really liked lightman.

I can't wait to put those lightsabres in my own movies! They have definetely been improved greatly in comparison the the somewhat lacking ADV2 lightsabres. Great glow effects, no pixelation, perfect!
The particle movies sure make me want it...NOW... Those screenshots looked very promising, It'll really be interesting to put those effects in movies.

FANTASTIC JOB GUYS!

Seems to me one of the best ways to promote AlamDV3 - especially in the preview stage - would be to make some outstanding movies using it. I remember when I bought AlamDV2, and why I bought it. A friend had just given me a link to "Art of the Saber". After seeing it, I felt like I just had to have the program that they used to do the sabers with, and within a couple of week I bought it.

Of course it's not that easy to put together something that'll become widespread and popular on the internet...but if it were to happen, if somebodys short film hit it big, and people were saying "How did they do those effects?"... and the credits listed AlamDV3 as the special effects software....as they say, seeing is believing.

Is there a place where people can drop suggestions for review sites etc?

Example, one unlikely site for reviewing this kind of software is tomshardware. A few months ago they reviewed a piece of $800 greenscreening software. Which IMHO is a bit on the expensive side for their target audience. I have no idea how chromanator compares with what they reviewed but it might be an idea to send them the new version as soon as it is released.

Regards, Eelco

How exactly are you estimating the quality without seeing the textures they are made from? What exactly is bad quality about what you are seeing? Maybe its the highly compressed divx files? I assure you the quality is fantastic...

Since Tarn made these files we've finish our updates to the lightsword engine, improving both the quality (i've not seen better lightswords come out of any program) and the speed. We've also finished adding Penguin in to our render engine which is giving stunning quality, the smoke is now vastly better than the clips here.

I interpreted what Misunderstated said as a reference to the $800 greenscreen program reviewed on Tom's Hardware Guide mentioned in the post above his, which is Serious Magic Ultra, not as a statement against a CSB product.

I've played with Ultra a bunch, and I'm not too impressed with it. In fact, I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has a good working knowledge of both Ultra and Chromy and what they think...might persuade me to add another lil icon to the list smile

I wish to ask the FXTeam, ( I think I have asked this quite a few times, no one is answering...)

Anyway, I wish to ask ; Does the new AlamDV 3 have the Ghostbuster beam as in AlamDV 2? If so, any changes or the same. (same is good, cause it was fantastic)

If anyone could please clarify this for me, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks and TIGER IS OUT! MacOS X 10.4 hits shelves on the 29th of this month!!!! I cannot wait, it is so awesome, I think this will be the best OS thus far from Apple.

Anyway stay safe be happy!

Hi Guys,

To take Sisko Kid's question one step further: Will you be able to create Lightning in AlamDV3? If so, how easy will it be to make it and is it a fairly automated process? Any questions you can answer will be great!

JM33 cool

P.S. If you don't have a Lightning creation tool for the program, can you add it?

You will be able to import the images from AlamDV2 plugins into AlamDV3. So yes, you will be able to use the current Ghostbusters stream effect.

The preview release will have 3 dynamically created effects; lightswords, muzzle flashes and the particle engine. This version will not have not have automated lightning generation, although you could probably create a sort of electricity/lightning effect with the particle engine. Obviously we will be adding new effects for the final version, and lightning is something we're interested in implementing.

Dude, it was stock footage. Alam can composite image streams that have alpha channels, so all Alam effects will. If it doesn't support image stream, I know it supports video, so convert it to video.

Malone, that sounds great.

Wow! It looks like those particles were generated by 3ds Max or something! Especially the lightswords they're awsome!
I'm really impressed, this is a program I know I'll use alot!
Keep up the good work guys!

Cheers!

Hope to play with it soon,

Carda.

That's a bit cheeky, especially when members of the beta team have actually been answering questions even though we probably should be spending the time working. razz

Would it be possible for Penguin to create something that looks like this:

I guess you'll have to wait for an answer to that one Jordan but I do know for a cert that Trapcode Particular has 4 presets for that effect.

Hopefully, once we get our mitts on AlamDV3, people can come up with all sorts of particle trickery & create lots of presets for the use of other people, including in the style of this air explosion

Another day and another dashed hope...

I've been wiating for ALAMDV3 to finish three old projects. I can't use ALAMDV2 because it isn't compatible with my editing system (Pinnacle 9). CSB has assured me that ALAMDV3 will work with Pinnacle and I believe them.

I know ALAMDV3 is going to be great. But as Tom Petty observed "the waiting is the hardest part."

Onwards & upwards.

Just the other day I was thinking about how cool it would be to add fog in a claymation that is in the planing stages, it looks like I will be. Hurray. I really don't care about lightsabers but fog, rain and other weather elements is pretty standered stuff I can't add into stop motion without Alam. Can't wait
