There has been feverish activity at FXhome for the last few days in the Name Game news topic, with the pros and cons of hundreds of names being debated back and forth over the course of nearly 300 posts.

We’d like to thank you all for the discussion and your ideas – there was a real mixture of themes and approaches, which is exactly what we had hoped. It's always useful to get a fresh perspective when it comes to names, otherwise you can find yourself going round and round in circles.

Thanks to all the forum discussion and brainstorming with the beta team, we've decided on the new name:

EffectsLab DV

While known as AlamDV3 during development, we feel that EffectsLab better represents the massive advances since AlamDV2, and implies a professional power as well as a sense of creativity.

To clarify for those asking, despite the new name, EffectsLab will still be a free upgrade for anybody that bought AlamDV2 after January 1st 2003. For everyone that bought AlamDV2 before that, there will be a small upgrade fee.

The 'Lab' suffix also enables us to bring all our products under one banner, so you can expect further announcements regarding other products in the near future.

More news on EffectsLab in a few days...

I think that is a good choice. It seems to point toward the products purpose.

I have a question though..Since Effects and lab are combined as one word, will a search for "effects" using something such as Google find EffectsLab DV?

Or will the whole website be remade? wink

No, they're planning to really confuse people by keeping 'AlamDV' used throughout the site, yet change the name of the product itself to EffectsLab. They are also planning to use a special 'randomisation' feature to ensure the logos for all the products and the website are never the same, but differ wildly to encourage yet more brand dilution.

Wow the name is great. It is kinda bittersweet for me even though I have never owned a CSB product I feel connected in the fact that I have been reading these forums for the past year and a half. The passing of Alam DV is sad but the sadness only ushers the gladness forth. Effects Lab is a good name and I am happy for the CSB team. It seems that this will usher in a new and exciting age of FXHome and I am glad that I can share in it. Thanks CSB for being such a good and caring team. Best wishes.

The 'DV' bit is more of a subtitle/suffix. The name of the program when referring to it can be 'EffectsLab' - the DV is there for additional description etc, and will usually only feature in main title locations (manual cover, potential box fronts, website headings etc).

In everyday conversation, feel free to use 'EffectsLab' by itself. smile

It'll be downloadable.

The only thing I don't like is the new FXHome logo. The font for "home" looks really cartoony and not very proffessional, and the "h" is really tall and makes the rest of the space feel empty. If you used a better font, it'd be a much much better logo (at least that's what I think).

I'm beginning to wonder if the community was gagged with the new names. It looks to me like you've had those images with 'EffectsLabDV' ready for some amount of time. Not to mention most of the choices in the Name Game were... odd.
*Marek rubs his chin suspiciously*

I really like the new name and the logo/color scheme. I giggled excitedly when I saw the image.

FXhome.com will be getting a new look, but we can't say when at the moment.

Some early designs have been made, but everything is on hold during these last moments of EffectsLab development. The new design is far less cluttered and generally much cooler and more slick - a much better place to show off your movies.

The colour scheme of the splash screen is not the same as the new site. Each application will have its own set palette while the website is quite different.

I have an inkling it will be available in both downloadable and box form. I think I remember them talking about wanted to have it be sold in retail stores.

A couple questions though. Can't you also use HD footage in the program? And were the voting names just to stimulate the discussion? I pressume you rathered more ideas being passed around than people just liking the names from the start.

Honestly, the name just came from the news post Tarn made. For over a year we had been trying to think of a new name, and the vote selection we gave on the post were the best we had come up with (rather lame I know).

The huge response to the names news item gave us loads of good ideas to look over and suddenly EffectsLab came in to being. Then all that was required for the splash was a name change (had been called "<insert name here> DV") and a logo design which proved to be rather easy.

Sounds cool. Go retro, man! The old school AlamDV.com is where it's at! smile Of course that really won't make any sense now. neutral

I like the logo quite abit, although when Ben said "EffectsLab" I pictured a pic of a testtube with fire and lightning. Still, I think the boot screen looks cool, and although the name is abit 'iffy' to me, so was AlamDV. (and look how much its grown on me)

I have to agree with others on FXHome logo. something more swurvey, rounded, and italicized would look good. Go amongst the way of big sandwich chains:

We've already sorted the FXhome logo, the version on the image tarn put up is really low quality and also tiny. Once you see the new site design you'll understand the look.

Can we see a higher resolution image of the splash screen?

EDIT: Wait! It says on the splash screen that the version is "3.000.something I dont remember". Would that mean it's completed?

EDIT2: Look at my avatar!

EffectsLab DV it is then... Nice one, definetely one of most descriptive I've seen. Could sound a bit better in my humble opinion, but I've seen worse smile All in all - I like it cool

Congrats. And I guess that having a name for your youngest child means that we're getting near it's birth? biggrin Hooray for the happy family! biggrin

Anyway - I wonder how much time it will take me to stop using AlamDV 3 name wink

The alternatives I've liked the most so far have been Forge and derivatives i.e. something like FXForge DV. Or on that Forge theme (and with the help of my trusty thesaurus!) how about something along the lines of:

FXLab DV
FXMill DV
FXMint DV
Who knew my 1st ever post (over on The Name Game thread) would have such an effect wink

Is it just me, or does the 'L' in the EffectsLab logo look too much like the 'L' plate for learner drivers?

(For those of you not in the UK, learner drivers have to display a sticker with a big red 'L' in it to indicate they are learning to drive).

Just perfect. It's an interesting name, and it's right to the point.

Don't you hate it when an old friend shows up and you say, "Hi Bob."
Then he grins really big and says, "I am no longer Bob, I am Effects Lab DV now."
Bob was always silly like that... crazy

Great name! It really has a grown up feel to it. Who could have known that incerting a word like "Lab" would do such a thing.

Swith on the transformers Igor we have some lightining to catch!

Well, there's this dark secret of CSB. It's been hidden from the public for years.

Word on the street is (foo), they secretly keep track of every post they see that asks when a product comes out, and they push back the release one day.

Short Answer: We'll know when it's ready to be known.

Hey guys,

it say on the spash screen that FXvault is for stock footage. Can you possible elaborate on exactly what FXvault is gonna be and what sort of stuff it will contain. Maybe on a new thread if not on here.

Cheers guys

Don't worry about that for now smile It will be explained in due course. The program release is what is most important at current.

We've mentioned the stock footage library before (see the web chat transcript), but as it won't be available for a while yet theres no concrete details. The aim is to provide a comprehensive library with a range of different stock footage. We're also hoping to have sound effects and music in the same system. It will all be priced very competitively and some of it will even be free to program owners.

thanks for the info malone. It's roughly what I thought. Affordable stock footage is very hard to find. I'll look forward to that getting off the ground once youve got the programs released.

Hyrbid, this is something important to me in what I do. I sometimes ned stock footage. The release of the program is significant but I do have other stuff to do the effects with in the mean time. So I asked the question because it was important to me to know. I thought thats what forums were about.

You are indeed correct, my apologies. I assumed that it was something the company didn't want to go into and so didn't mention what it was.

FXhome will soon be able to cater to some of your stock footage needs for uses ranging from special effects to... whatever else they include smile

WOW, i can't wait for the stock footage smile It will then help me come up with even more ideas smile. Will the stock footage be similar to Artbeats?, eg. "ReelFire", "ReelExplosions" & "Particle Effects"

EffectsLab DV. An excellent choice. Of course, there will be some nostalgia, as the old guard sit around smoking pipes saying, "Ah, you young whippersnappers! You've got it so easy these days! When I were a lad, we used to call it AlamDV..." etc. etc.

Yeah, It's one day after what it was before now.

(No there is no prospective release date at this time).
