Some of you have noticed that the infamous To-Do list has now hit 100%. This means we're close. Very, very close. Final testing is coming to an end and, as a warning of impending excellence, we thought it was time for a proper announcement:

Download the Divx version (4.49 MB)
or
Download the Quicktime 7 version
(4.14 MB)
(Quicktime 7 required)

You've all been waiting patiently for a long, long time. That wait is nearly over. FXhome.com is the place to be this week.

EffectsLab DV is coming. Prepare for a reaction.

We have a few big 'thank yous' to send out today. So, in no particular order:

Jon Potter - everyone say hello to our new resident music composer. Jon has been working with us for several months now on a number of projects, including the promotional video for the big press release in a few months. The 30 Second Advert in this news post is the first public unveiling of his musical contributions and, I have to say, I'm extremely excited about it. Jon's a hugely versatile composer, lending his skills to both his own original compositions and filmic scores. Next up you'll hear him flexing his action scoring muscles again in the forthcoming Project One directed by er-no and Flameboy and starring Hybrid-Halo. We'll have more info on both Jon and Project One in the coming weeks.

Hybrid-Halo - talking of Hybrid, we have to send big thanks out to him for putting together our excellent new front page splash in double-quick time and with no grumbling whatsoever. He rose to the challenge and did us a massive favour, in the process becoming a better man. I think you'll all agree that the new splash certainly grabs your attention!

xcession - the splash is also the handiwork of xcession, who gallantly dragged himself from his mysterious evening pursuits to add the final touches to the presentation, helping us to get the new front page up and running with minimal fuss.

The beta testers - not only for their continuing excellent work on the testing of EffectsLab, but also for their critiques and advice during the creation of the 30 Second Advert. It would seem that, no matter what you throw at them, these guys always have intelligent and vital comments to make. I don't know what we'd do without them.

No, no gleam in this. A quick summing up of what you see here:

• Lightswords, obviously. smile

• Stock footage fire elements, enhanced with lightsword-animated trails.

• Muzzle flashes of various types for the marines.

• Particle-based fireballs.

• Particle-based green magic stuff with lightsword-enhanced glowy/flickery bits (the first shot).

• Muzzle flash combos used for the colourful, shifting backgrounds behind the titles.

Glad to hear it had an affect wink It's always satisfying to see something you've done go into the public domain. And even better that it's on the front page of a community you care alot about.

To the future guys, this week is going to be killer.

Correct.

On top of this, the beta team and core team are making a special effort to be around this week.. well actually, we're always around so there's no extra effort involved... So if you have any questions about the up and coming details or just want to have a chat - we should be around in the company chat room.

O man, I gotta buy Alam2 so I can have this. The last remains of Alam3 can still be seen on the AlamDV page. How saddening.

O WELL!!! So how much longer until you cant get Alam2 with upgrade? Cuz I have to save up a bit more money and don't want to end up paying more.

Thanks again for all the fantastic comments!

All the effects in the teaser were done in the preview version of EffectsLab so you can make some amazing stuff with it. When it is release (whenever that might be wink ) we'll be finishing off the product with help from you guys.

We already have some cool stuff to add which is waiting in the wings to move us swiftly towards the final version. The preview is one of the most significant stages in FXhome history (if not THE most significant). It brings 3 years of interface and engine work to a conclusion.

From here we will be mainly doing fun stuff to make the program easier to use and adding some more cool effects. The preview also means we are pretty far down line with Chromanator 2.

This week is going to be a great one, the year is going to be amazing!

just joking, i do wish that i had been able to film something for this occasion however.

I LOVE YOU GUYS!
That trailer look so cool! And that fire look so damn real! What an enormous progress!

Also, I have a very pressing question; EffectsLab DV does work for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger), right?

BTW that Quicktime 7.0 movie didn't work for me until I downlaoded the .txt file (???) and changed just changed the name to an .mp4. After that it works fine, just so you know.

Aw...man. The computer I'm on doesn't have Quicktime 7.

But first of, cheers to CSB. What a job you guys have had to maintain your enterprise while still providing sagacious customer service an technical support to your clients. And the new flash intro is cool....but shouldn't it loop? Oh well, it's still badarse.

Okay, so I'm sitting here, at school, taking a test, and I'm like, "Screw this, I'm checking the To-Do List." And then I go to FXH and the banner has changed and I'm like...."Holy........crap!"

Can't wait for EffectsLab, hopefully it's out by Thursday or Friday; seeing as I've got a 24 hour video race I'm competing in on Friday, and this would REALLY help.

Oh, and great work, CSB team!

Cheers,
Ben

That's because it's an MPEG-4 file, and you're on a Mac. Save it to your computer and open it in Quicktime.

I'm going to predict a release at or near Episode 3's release.

they just came out with the "preview" movie... so it would make sense that it wont be for a week + so people can see it and get more excited -- so i'm going to predict around may 19 - 20....

We do intend to have lots of nice fire stock, yes.

The fire effects coming out of Sollthar and hitting the marine's 'shield' are mostly composited real fire. Each shot consists of several bits of real fire, composited and animated to behave so it looks right. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by how it came out, especially when it hits the shield.

The plasma-esque trails coming off the back of the fireballs were done using the lightsword system. They're freehand lightsword shapes, animated by hand to behave that way. I'm really looking forward to seeing what people use the freehand lightswords for - I think we're going to see some really innovative uses that we haven't even considered.

The smoky fireballs that go in front and behind Charlie are almost entirely particle-based. I comped in simple real fire elements on their heads to make them look a bit more interesting.

I should probably point out that Sollthar flying up in the air was, of course, done in Chromanator, as that's not what EffectsLab is designed for. Everything else, however, was EffectsLab all the way.

Unless I'm missing something, Chromy can also produce that effect of stock fire footage being animated and hitting the marine's "shield". Does EffectsLab contain any features/advantages for special effects compositing that Chromy doesn't have (or won't have in version 2)?

Does EffectsLab contain any features/advantages for special effects compositing that Chromy doesn't have (or won't have in version 2)?
Yes, the program will dynamically generate various effects internally, such as the massively adaptable lightsword system; 'flare', the muzzle flash generator; and the numerous particle effects possible thanks to Penguin, the particle engine, which are limited only by your imagination and creativity smile Each of these will enhance a straighforward composite type effect, in many situations (for example, the fireballs in the teaser video).

Cheers,
Arktic.

When it comes to compositing fire clips like that, you could use either Chromy or EffectsLab. They would each offer different advantages, so would suit different kinds of shots.

If I was doing a full, crazy fireball effect, like in the teaser, I'd use EffectsLab, as I could then augment the real elements with particle systems, lightsword flares etc etc.

EffectsLab's stock footage feature is designed to use light-based overlays (explosions etc, which use the Add comp method), or alpha channelled images - essentially the stock browser is a replacement for the old plugins system in AlamDV2, for people that want to continue down that route occasionally. The primary use for EffectsLab is in the generated effects.

If you want to do full compositing of lots of varied elements, and want full control over them all, then Chromanator is where it's at. Using both the programs in conjunction would, of course, be the optimum solution. wink

With that said Tarn, will Chromanator 2 and ELDV work together? I am thinking like FCP does with its counterparts. Like, maybe ELDV can import a layered Chromy file, or at least give Chromy more export options like a tif alphasaved image stream. This would make it all more powerful. For example, greenscreen out a guy, put a background, import to ELDV and put fireballs flying behind him, etc.

Hello everyone
Firstly I'd like to thank tarn for his introduction, all I can say is I'm very lucky to have the chance to work with such a talented group of people. Working on the music for the advert (as well as some other on-going projects) with the guys has been a great experience. Congratulations to tarn and everyone else who lent a hand for the way the ad turned out, I think everyone would agree - its looking fantastic.

Massive thanks to hybrid for the amazing web design he has been working on for me, his help and enthusiasm has been inspiring. The guys have been kind enough to offer to host a small site for me which should be going up within the next couple of weeks.

Finally I'd like to say thank you to all of the EffectsLab team for having such an amazing vision and for creating what I'm sure will be an incredible piece of sorfware. I'm hugely exited to be joining such an enthusiasic and exciting community and hopefully I will be able to work with many more of you in the months and, hopefully, years to come.

biggrin

OMFG, I just fell out of my chair. That was by far the funniest line I have ever read on FXHome.

Incredible job CSB and beta testers this thing looks like it is shaping up to be ADV2.5 on crack, speed, and acid. This program is gonna turn some heads.

Well done and can't wait to try it out.

Just picking up on a point someone else made earlier on, will it be possible for EffectsLabDV to export with alpha channeled photo files. I was just thinking that if I am going to be doing a greenscreen film with lightsabres, it might be quite useful to be able to create the lightsabers and match them up in EffectsDV, export these lightsabre layers as photos, and then composite everything together in Chromanator as they will match up as its the same video?

Hope that makes sense.

In that case, you'd be best off using chromanator to remove the green, add in the background and THEN use Effects Lab to add the sabers smile

Cheers,
Arktic.

Ok, the wait is almost over. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas. You know like after you have some idea of what your getting, but not totally sure. Like when I was a kid I used to try and untape my presents to get a glimpse, but could never pull it off.

Anyway, I have like 6 projects I want to try the new effects lab out on, and can't wait to get it into my hands.

Please bring it to us by this weekend.

I can't get either of those video files to play sad

When I play the DivX version it say "the file contains unknown audio data. Tag 85". I have the full version of DivX Pro, so I don't understand the problem.

Any ideas anyone?
