A message to all FXhomers

It's been a long time coming. Weeks have shot past with alarming haste, deadlines have been elusive, To-Do lists have fluctuated and schwar's Red Bull intake has quadrupled. Throughout the long, dark time known as 'development' you have all shown incredible patience and supported us all the way, for which we will be eternally grateful.

There's no need to be patient anymore. The wait is over.

EffectsLab is here. We hope you enjoy it!

UPDATE Friday 13/5/05:We have released another update (862) that fixes a few issues that people have reported. Thanks to everyone for the great feedback in the EffectsLab forum, we're working through things as quickly as we can. We recommend everyone head over to the downloads page to grab the latest version.

TonyMontana - are you an admin user? You need to be logged in as an admin user in Windows XP or Mac OS X to install and validate EffectsLab.

The filename should end with ".programKey" < some web browsers might mess this up, so manually rename it if necessary.

Hello!

I've just installed the program and get the same error-message as Tony Montana : "Unable to create the folders needed to store application data in your user directory."

Before you ask:
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
ATI Radeon 9600
Win XP + SP2
DX 9.0c
512 MB Ram

Fast help would be really nice.

Thanks,
Boris

How do use the key?

Where should you save it?

What should it be called - exactly?

HOLY JESUS MOTHER FRICKIN CRAP JESUS HOLY FRICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You guys are....just FRICKIN AWESOME! EffectsLab is FINALLY OUT!

YEEEESSSSS!!!!!!

Too bad for me, though, my internet's out at home, so I have to check everything from school, which I'm in now. Right as the new FXH logo appeared on my Firefox tabs, I knew it was out. I seriously here in the middle of school yelling, "Yes! Oh my god! Yes! This is AWESOME!" and all my classmates think I'm going looney.

I like all the current website changes, with the exception of the user icons near everyone's signature. Why do the 'Chromanator User' and 'Alam User' icons have no shading or anything? They just look awkward, in comparison to the older icons. Maybe that should be changed....Hmmm....
Damn you guys for making me wait 7 hours through school to get this awesome program! biggrin

But oh well, I could care less because you guys ROCK!

The Full name of the Windows program key is as follows exactly:

"EffectsLabWindows.programkey"

Make sure you have file extentions visible, so that you are not simply renaming a text file.

If you have problems, delete the file that it's copied to your EffectsLab folder, redownload the key and try again. During the beta testing I had a brief patch where a similiar thing happened to me which I solved by using the key resender and downloading a new key.

If after this you're still having problems; open up your EffectsLab folder and put the "EffectsLabWindows.programkey" into it. Then restart EffectsLab.

Let me know if it works.

Every folder has a toolbar up the top "File edit view favourites...."

Under "Tools" select "folder options" and a medu will pop up. Select the "View tab" and you'll see a large list of different attributes you can enable and disable, near the top is the "Hide Extensions for known file types".

UNCLICK this, and press apply.

Downloaded the demo, it didn't do much for me, but that's probably just because I'm a bit tired at the moment. It did start, though. Well, I'm really glad that it's finally been released, and I hope my project will get done so that I can put that little extra touch with EffectsLabs.

You'll need to check the email you'll have been sent for details on how to register and download your free upgrade.
If you have problems with doing this, I think we've got pretty much every question answered in the sticky in the EffectsLab help forum.

Yeah, you need to keep in mind that this is simply a preview release. There is alot more still to come including lens flares, saber clashes as well as the stock footage section. Remember that FXLab can also composite real stock footage effectively.

I purchased ALD2 in Sept 2003, I have not received a notification e-mail from FXhome, I tried e-mailing them but did not get an answer, I also tried the key-resender, and so far haven't had any luck. Is AOL not letting their e-mail through, how do I set it up so I can receive their e-mail? THANX!

Please be patient for a reply to your email if you've sent it today. I imagine the fxhome staff will be very busy with hundreds of customer emails and you'll be answered and your problem solved ASAP. In the mean time, refer to the Effects Lab help forum for further help smile

Edit: I got it to work! If you are a Mac user still in the ages of Jaguar (sad) then heres what to do:

Right/control click on the EffectsLab icon in your applications folder.

Then click "Show Package Contents".

The following folder should show up:

Then, navigate to the contents folder, shown above. Enter that.
Click on the Effects Lab icon, and marvel.

I realize that this may sound a little...simple, but how can I get my free upgrade? lol. I have tried to use my magic code for alamDv2, thinking that that is what is needed to verify my account, but when I enter it I am told it is wrong...and I think it was even logged as a hacking attempt lol. Could some one give me a hand here?

Thank you.

An email with details on your new magic code would have been sent to the email address you registered alamdv2 with this morning. If you feel this email has changed, please email team@fxhome.com with your name, postcode and old email address and they'll get back to you.

I think it's safe to say that's definetly something planned for the future, current priorities are getting everyone's program working and then I think introducing the new features.

Right now I think the best idea is to read the manual and become familiar with the interface and all the features, tutorials will appear eventually smile

Looking forward to seeing what people can do with it (Lightsword clips anyone?)

Here is the clip I made. Why does the lightsword seem to have interlace type lines going through it?

Brettsta - The footage there was progressive, you must set that in your project settings. You must have had it set to split field so its working on it like it was interlaced.

It is in a 'preview' state right now- although it is a fully working and stable program, there are many up and coming features to be added.

I have a quick question. At present, I'm am stuck with lightsaber rotoscoping option of rotoscoping filmstrips in Adobe Photoshop. Can anyone tell me if this new program is more efficient/speedy than my current method? Thanks.

You're kidding right? This program will do the lightsabers 100 times faster and more efficiently with every aspect easily changeable, download the demo and have a look. Make sure you read the manuals, you will be amazed.

This is GREAT, I love it. Very powerfull, I have had no 'lag' at all. AMAZING guys, congrats on making such a powerful and efficient program!

One question though- When I am making the Sabers, they are slightly transparent and the stick I am holding shows through a bit.

Looks good! Can't buy though, no money.

Noticed this on the download page:

Digital Grading
Flawlessly composite your effects using digital grading to match your live action footage.
G7 Render Engine

Awesome, thanks...thats a big relief. I have a crushing deadline on a project and I knew that to finish it in Photoshop would take like four days without sleep.

EffectsLab should save you a lot of time, and a lot of hassle. On top of that, your lightswords should come out as good if not better than in photoshop. In other words, it's a win-win situation. smile

The demo (and full version) comes with a quickstart that includes a short lightsword tutorial. If you check that out, you should get an idea of how flexible, fast and easy it is in EffectsLab.

As an example, the clip that was used for the roto competition over at theforce.net only took me a couple of hours. I heard about some people taking days to do it!

Our coders are currently in bed recovering, but they'll be on the case and investigating your problem first thing tomorrow morning.

One thing to check - are you an admin user on your system? you need to log in as a proper admin user to install.

Hmm.. I'd also check what the download/program is unzipping in. Please use a standard unzipping program and the x32's and other files might be getting ignored or lost using a third/lame unzipping program.

That should help! Please reply if it sorts out the problem smile

Is this the final version or will there be another after feed back from us? I ask because I have an error or two, and I was wondering if (how) I could possibly get the error that the program recorded to either, Tarn, or schwar, or malone? Or possibly one of the beta testers if that is better.

Great program so far guys, enjoying as of this far.

Wow, tres cool. I'm awaiting a money transfer to my PayPal account (I have a very complicated system of checks and balances), and while that's happening (ugh, six days!), I'm just wondering how much luck people think I'll have on a G4 800mhz machine with 512mb RAM? I have access to a G5, but I'm wondering if this'll work.

Anyhow, though I haven't posted at all, I have been following this, and I'm very excited!

Thanks,

Gabe

Well newsithorder, I actually don't know if I have the latest, I should check up on that. I thought that there was only one released, since people are being charged for it. But maybe not, maybe if you buy it now you get every upgrade of the same program for free. So if there is still being work done (which I assumed) I have some info to help approve the over all program...well I have recorded error reports.

Edit: I checked up on it and it appears that it is a different version, as far as I can tell, I have version 10.1.0.11, and the one up now is 3.000.860 or something to that effect. Does anyone know what the difference at this time is? If is a big one then I will download it and not wait.

Again very pleased.

Maybe its the way the file you are opening is encoded, thats what happened to me. Try importing a uncompressed .mov video in and see if that works.

This is not a major problem, I can get around it by not choosing "Taskbar always on top" (I don't know what it's called but anyway).

EffectsLab is behind the taskbar (the one with the start button).

CSB-Staff

I know that many of you will be fielding potential problems that unfortunately come with any new product release, I wanted to take a few moments of your time to mention my few hours of experiencing Effects Lab. Although I have submitted a few projects that involved light sabers, I consider myself a novice. But I also thought I'd share my experience with Effects lab, espeically when comparing the current rendering system versus the AlamDV2 system.

At the risk at sounding uneducated, I'd have to say that I was giddy with excitement at the ease of use; and blown away at the overall quality of the entire system. Like all new programs, getting over the intial difficulty of learning to navigate through the program was tricky. But after reading the quickstart manual and applying it to my own projects, I found myself emmersed in a light saber project which I originally was loathing.

The interface is exceptional and you really can create great light sabers whether you're using the 4-point system or trying the new free-hand method. (Sadly I can't think of how I can use the free-hand method right now, but I know that there are users more intelligent and creative to scuplting their own effects).

I created this short clip to demonstrate my perception of the differences between the two versions:
http://www.rudypicardo.com/video/RudyTestLightSaber.mov

(In this clip the light sabers created in AlamDV2 are from 00:00;00 - 00:08;00, while the light sabers created in Effects Lab was created in time code range 00:08;04 - 00:12;00.)

From a design standpoint, I really like how you can add your own hilt and tip curves, which not only make more authentic looking sabers, but also make it so much easier to create the motion blur/curve that is created during light saber motions Although I'm sure I did the compositing incorrectly when I had AlamDV2, you can see the yellow marker tape on my saber prop, while in the Effects Lab edit its much more difficult to see. (And yes, I noticed a few small errors, which I'll be sure to correct tomorrow)

From an editor's perspective...WOW! Whomever worked on the masking system should be commended. It was a sublime experience when I saw how clean the saber looks, when my talent is whirling it around behind him. And you should also note that there's masking involved in the saber he's holding in his left hand (the angle and clothing is blocking the saber). I also like how I can either edit the four point blade by either manipulating the points or blanking the canvas and creating the blade again.

And although there are traditional color schemes for light sabers, if anyone wanted to get a burnt sienna, fuschia, or chicago maroon light saber, its good to know they can get exactly that.

What excites me even more is that I haven't even had the chance to experiment with the muzzle flashes and particle engine!

The only thing that I have my reservations about is how critical everyone will be with one another now that Effects Lab makes it ridiculously easy to make production-level quality effects at a shockingly affordable price; this program makes it difficult for anyone to screw up light sabers - although I'm sure I'll make a lot so please excuse any future mistakes I make this summer.

I'm sure most users will disagree, but I personally think that this program is worth much more than its current price. Please believe me when I say that this is meant to be 100% complimentary and I'm not being suggestive. I hope you keep this program as affordable for as long as you possibly can.

Although I'm glad I have the free upgrade, I can't help but feel obligated to help the CSB-Digital Staff again. So I wanted to say that in a few days (once I get my first summer job paycheck), I'll be purchasing a Limited Edition clothing item from their web-page. Obviously, I know its not a lot, but its one small thing I can do. I both encourage and challenge other users who got the free upgrade to do the same.

For those who didn't get the free upgrade and are either paying for the upgrade or purchasing it for the first time:
IT IS WORTH EVERY SINGLE MONETARY UNIT YOU SPEND ON IT
.
I personally own After Effects and Maya 6.0, and work with both AVID DV Xpress and Final Cut Pro HD (with Motion) in my lab. Believe me that you are getting not merely a high quality product, but a PRODUCTION LEVEL QUALITY product.

To the staff and quality assurance testers, thank you once again. You should feel proud, because you making me look like a damn good rotoscoper right now. And it was absolutely worth the wait.

Do the lightsaber effect is so much easier now, the quick start manual as I'm sure you all will agree with me is fantastic really helps those who are new to these things like me easier to understand.

I can't wait for the plugins to arrive for effectslab because i think the will be as good as the actual program.

I would also like to say how good their custmor support is, as they were very quick to help me with any problems I had.

This is strange, I used the program last night, (went a little sloppy though) and now I'm trying to use it again, but then it says;

------------------------
Director Player Error

Property not found

#directXVersion
------------------------

So I click OK (or Cancel, doesn't really matter), and then I see this:

------------------------
Director Player Error

Index out of range
------------------------

So I click OK or Cancel again, and then I get the same 'Property not found'-and-such Error, and it goes all over again in circles.

PLEASE, CAN YOU HELP ME OUT!?

Woohoo!! Effectslab is out at last!!

Aww Crap!! I'm now at my parents for the weekend!!

Erm... Actually, that's probably a good thing. I have 4000 words worth of essays to write by wednesday and there's no way I'll be doing them if I can play on effectslab instead.

Couldn't you have put back the deadline a week? tard biggrin

Capital job, chaps!

Schwar (or whomever I can get a reply from)

Netbanx won't let me purchase through this site. I have a corporate Visa and very much wish to purchase this product. I know my criteria is correct, and there is plenty of room on the card, yet when i submit to transact, it denies me, yet won't explain what it's having kittens about so i can fix what it's whining about. Oh, and it's a US purchase btw.

So my question is simple: is there any other way to (besides paypal) get a purchase completed?

Please feel free to email me whenever you have time.

Thanks, and great job on everything. You guys are destined for greatness.

I cannot get Effects Lab to run because the godd****d program key doesn't work. I'm tearing my hair out here! I need to get a project done & if it isn't done by Monday then I'm going to lose the project and future assignments. I've shown the EL trailer to the folks who want to make this project for them and they are impressed. But I've had to put them off too long now and their patience is running out.

Can anyone help?

We have released another update (862) that fixes a few issues that people have reported. Thanks to everyone for the great feedback in the EffectsLab forum, we're working through things as quickly as we can. We recommend everyone head over to the downloads page to grab the latest version.

Thanks CSB, Just tried the Demo. Its Really Cool! I just cant get over how awsome the lightsabers look. Still figuring out things in the muzzle flashes, and particle systems, but I just got the basics of it. I'm now waiting for my Effects Lab registration code, so the suspense is just too much.

My Congratulations to CSB,
for the best effects program that I've seen ever...
EffectsLab DV definitly hits the spot right on the nose for me.

Thank You fxhome for this program, I know I will be using this program for a very long time.
"Probably until you make an even better version!" smile

Cheers,

Carda.

smile You shouldn't be waiting for a product key/code unless you've only bought it recently (within the last 20 minutes). If you've been waiting longer than that then there's a problem (also if your free upgrade key hasn't arrived - there's a problem). Head into the EffectsLab help forum and read the sticky, so far all registration and key problems are solved/answered. smile

I bought Alam DV2 just a little over a year ago and loved it to death. I still think that program (no matter how outdated it is now) would still be worth the price without the Effects Lab upgrade. BUT... I was so happy to finally get the free upgrade, I had to buy Chrominator (one because I was taking my damn sweet time buying it, and two, it's an awesome program and I couldn't just get Effects Lab completely free) so I bought it. Great work you guys. I really haven't posted anyting before, mainly because I was too damn lazy, but i'm on here everyday reading all the updates.

Great work on Effects Lab, looks great. It's very intimidating though. And that's a good thing, now I just have to find some time and read the manual.
Once again, awesome job guys!

Well, I've been recently interested within Movie Making and I have always wanted to perform effects such as lightsabres and explosions simply, so I purchased EffectsLab. It's such a great piece of software, thank you so much for it! biggrin
