|Just a short clip of a sith accidentally getting a light saber through his head|Posted: Wed, 8th Jun 2005, 11:16am
Post 2 of 31
It's my lucky day.
Will post review later
What happened with the crawl? *sigh. Also, you had a red blob appear at the top of the saber, what was that? Was it meant to be some kind of friction with the ceiling? You could have used a blood plugin or even Effects Lab particle engine for the head thing, would have had greater dramatic effect. Probably.
I still think your earlier films are your best work, with the seminal "Sith Formers" at the top of my list

Yay, the long awaited return of darth paul. A classic skit, executed pretty well. The compression killed the opening crawl for me, but apart from that I enjoyed watching it. We crave more, give us more!

I am working on another modern day star wars home movie. I just need the time to create it. I have joined the Teretorial Army and I do not have as much spare times as I did when I did Sith Formers.

Oh dear. I must watch. Darth_Paul, your movies were classics. But usually the preview was a little Dragon Ball Z guy with a yellow background. What happened to that? That was like, your mark, like Zorro's "Z." You should update the movie info and change it. I will watch this when I get the time but wmv is a hassle for me.

Anything nice or encouraging that I could possibly say would be sugar-coated with the heaviest form of sarcasm possible to conjur, as over the many submissions you've had at the cinema you have easily amassed the lowest ratings and this submission I fear, is no different.
Simple Ideas won't be amusing if the camera work and editing is equally simple, infact 'Simple' is too praising for the camera work in this piece. I'd go as far as to say the only camera work involved in the whole process was probably plugging the firewire cable in to it.
There is no music, no editing, no intelligent acting or plays on the inevitable head skewering, no nothing infact. This is even an idea which has been done before and in many equally poor similiar ways. This isn't even an effects test, it's the attempt of resubmerging into a community with bad humour and for me, you've failed miserably. Especially considering we've all seen you use lightsabers (alam sabers) to a far greater degree in Sith Formers. Maybe if this was done using EffectsLab I could forgive the effects test as you testing out a new program. This is not the case, you haven't even said this is an old piece of work you're re-submitting, so no excuses.
My criticism is with the best possible intentions, quit making crap that you spend little/no time or thought about. Start working on something that may go somewhere, maybe something that will challenge you and ultimately surprise us. You could really do much better. As unfortunately, this ends up on the fxhome scrapheap alongside the vast majority of your other submissions.

Don't you think its about time you started doing something productive with your time, software and camera?
Hybrid is right about the ratings: your pathetic movies have occupied the absolutely bottom of the FXHome cinema since you started posting here 2 or more years ago, without so much as a hint of improvement. If it weren't for the fact that you removed a few, after they recieved the most atrocious reviews FXhome has ever seen, there would be more.
I for one, am tired of your ridiculously moronic, cringingly mentally retarded, movies. If it weren't for the fact that they do a better job of insulting you than i could ever do, i'd be urging you to take them down more.
For god's sake grow up. You must be almost 19 by now, if not older, yet you consistently make test clips which would embarrass a 10 year old. I hereby ban you from making any more test anythings.

I say that was a 3/5. It was okay. I had a little chuckle watching it. If you want to go ahead and make crappy shorts or great shorts, go for it. I don't think you are required to make movies that knock the socks off of people when they watch it. It took me 30 seconds to download it and it wasn't a waste of time for me.

Hm, Xcession's point may be harsh. Though I think it's deserved based upon the situation. It's agreed that not everyone is out to set the same standards of amateur film on fxhome, and everyone is ultimately free to show their movie. Everyone is also free to express their opinion of that movie (within reason).
In any normal thread, Xcession's post may have been deleted. Just in this case, he's absolutely right. I think the best way of making sure Darth_Paul_Goku improves, even if only slightly is by using whatever means possible to make him put some effort into what he submits.

Because you weren't expressing an opinion about the movie. Instead you were defending the movie from prior criticism. Everyone has the right to critique a movie afterall.
And also to save this thread from turning into an argument. It's meant to be a movie discussion. Simple.

I agree with that. My point was simply it seems to be one rule for one and another for everyone else. Critisism is fine but that post was personally abusive. Thats was my point and a fair one I think. It just seemed like making the point on another thread would kind of be pointless as the offending post wouldn't be there to be seen. Dissappointing that critisiing a moderator gets a post deleted

I think hybrid just explained, quite clearly, that your post was deleted because it wasn't concerning the movie itself, only the comments posted about it. It was not because it was criticising a mod.
Furthermore in the interests of keeping a semblance of authority, it should be understandible that posts which undermine said authority are quite likely to be 'moderated' anyway, especially if the undermining is flawed. Whether we actually do so, is another matter however.
Dissappointing that critisiing a moderator gets a post deleted
Thats quite clever, albeit in a rather transparent way - we can't 'moderate' it because it would be confirming your damning indictment.
Ironically you've cunningly steered this thread into another tangent, by goading a response from me. You sly fox!

oh i'm bad like that.
I wasn't trying to stir anything up as such, the movie is terrible I agree, just the tone of the post I didn't like is all. Of course you have to have authority, agreed. wasn't trying to undermine anything just looking for fairness, if you want to keep authority abusive posts kind of undermine it themselves. Hows it go...."with great power comes great responsability" ok cheesy i know but true, but you see you've forced me to mention the movie so now we're even

*Fires sticky webs over both xcession and jotoki's fingers, ceasing their keyboard orientated activities.*
As a moderator, I don't disagree with a fair amount of the posts I delete. Infact I think it'd be an abuse of power if I simply deleted what I disagree with. Just sometimes, something has to go for the best of the thread as a whole.
Nothing personal guys, I'm just trying to keep things clean
Ah yeah, the movie is dire. (Obligatory on topic one-liner).
p.s. Anything following the route of the previously deleted or repeating sly-fox tactics ala Jotoki will also be gunned down without hesitation. If your post was deleted there was a fair reason or because a post it responded to was deleted for a fair reason rendering your post pointless. Contesting it's deletion isn't to be carried out in the thread.

This was better than your last movies, as there was a hint of humor, not to say that there was actually any. I think the fact you, yes YOU are darth paul, makes the movie much funnier on it's own.

My criticism, and also I believe Xcessions are based on our love for amateur film. Neither of us expect high standards all the time, but low standards all the time is something that can be frustrating, especially given the fact we both agree that Darth Paul may well produce something excellent if he put the effort in. This isn't a 12 year old submitting something he's worked hard on but is subsequently dire due to an extreme lack of skill or understanding. This is dire simply because there has been no effort put into it.
Anyway, let me re-affirm myself. Anything posted following the route of the previously deleted or repeating sly-fox tactics ala Jotoki will also be gunned down without hesitation. If your post was deleted there was a fair reason or because a post it responded to was deleted for a fair reason rendering your post pointless. Contesting it's deletion isn't to be carried out in the thread. You're free to contact the fxhome team about whether or not you believe the moderating to be fair at email@example.com
or you can PM any of the moderators individually about an issue you have. Ultimately I think we're some of the nicest mods about, but maybe that's just me

I've done a LOT of test movies myself, I'd say about 50. But I haven't posted any of them here, because I didn't think you'd find them interesting. Most of these tests took 1 to 5 seconds, and they were just for me to test a plugin out, or to see if a specific thing would work out.
Darth Paul, would you want to go to a real theatre and then see a whole list of simple, insignificant tests, so that it makes it almost impossible to see the real movies? I think not.
Currently I'm working on a project for a 10 mnute film, with mostly lightsabre fighting. It is a sort of a test to see what I can do, but at least it would be long enough and interesting enough to see. I suggest you do the same, you should have put all the energy you put into these small tests into one long and interesting film! (and it's not wrong to put any of the humour you have in it)
Good luck with that!
Edit: Oh, and please do use EL, it's really not that hard, and the lightsabres are so much better, they really are as good, if not better than, the 'official' Star Wars lightsabres. And I mean that!

Because you weren't expressing an opinion about the movie. Instead you were defending the movie from prior criticism.
Wait, what? Isn't that expressing an opinion on the movie? And we're not allowed to debate or compare points of view?
And you point out that Xcession's review (and yours) were justified in being harsh because you have darth paul's best interests at heart, and are trying to get him to improve?
Not everyone's looking to improve. I've been reminded of that many times when giving crits on this site back in the day.
That said, this movie was awesome. Why? Because of this whole dialogue it started. All his movies seem to start what eventually become awesome threads.
5 from me.
That's right. Fight the man.
EDIT: May I aslo add that I think posts like Xcession's should not be censored? I hate thought police. Debated? Sure. But I hope the community isn't modded in a way to cater to the most thin-skinned of beings posessing skin (Whch it currently isn't).

Leave the internets.
