Well since nobody is doing it, I decided to do the 3d challenge and I think I have come up with a good one...
Ok so here it is...

Tell us:
1. what Program you used
2. How long it took to render.
3. And how long it took to make.
EDIT: Lets say all submission will be due by the 2nd of july.
Here is my submission:

Program:3ds max
Render time:10 sec
Time took:30 min
Good luck guys cant wait to see your submissions

SL:FX does not endorse or have anything to do with this contest, in fact SL:FX (hereafter refered to as "Those guy's who's name you perverted with this contest") demand that our name and any reference to this contest as a SL:FX sponsored event are to be removed from the face of the planet immediately lest we wage war on you and your country

Yeah so do you actually know what SL:FX is?

To be fair you can't really have a winner as such, there will be a group of pics where the CG element matches in and there will be a group that don't, there can't be any that almost match in. If you have 3 pics where the element matches in you can't really rank them and say "that one matches better".

The idea of the modelling challenges were that you can definately say that one object is modelled better (either more accurate to the original or just looking cooler). If I were you I'd set a different object each time and then people can model that and you can then directly compare them (one that sticks in my mind from the 3DTotal speedmodelling was a computer mouse - directly comparable but still with room for creativity).

I would suggest renaming this to the FX Comp. Challenge, though.

Even on multi-million dollar films, there are effects that matched better than others. Film and still images are art, and art is subject to criticism. There will be images that more closely resemble realism. I think in this contest there are suffiecient "shades of gray" to have a competition. I see what you are saying, but I don't think that many (if any) of us are capable of compositing well enough that it is completely undetectible. I say let the contest begin, though I respect those that believe that compositing only has a correct and incorrect application.

I would like to see a actual 3d modeling competition resume, as well.

Nicely done. The tanker behind the tree's looks excellent.

That was funny, billy3d.

I think he composited in the Enterprise model, and I think you know that.

(The Enterprise looks good, thought a little small. I'm not sure if it would appear through the atmosphere at all at a height that would make it that small)

I think the tanker is real. Considering the quality of the ship and then that of the tanker, it seems obvious to me that only the ship was added.

This idea would've been loads better if it had actually been thought out a bit more. It would make more sense to provide a single background image that everyone works from for instance, this means that everyone has the same ammount of work with regard to things like grain and lighting and whatnot.

You can't really have a 'contest' and then just say "Do anything you like and we'll say which is best and which is worse" because at the moment the images are incomparable:

ssjaaron's has large amounts of grain while the others don't
jfbiscardi's "Mini Pic" has a very large CG element and therefore draws the eye more than the bullets or the Enterprise as they're rather small and out of the way making it easier for them to go "unnoticed".

I know it may seem like I'm just weeweeing on your bonfire for the sake of it but you have to think it through, have an aim to it and some kind of guidelines otherwise it's just pointless.

My personal view is that in terms of any form of contest, it's always good to have someone with a good knowledge of the competition subject organising it. In the case of 3D, I don't think there's any doubt that Rawree is substantially more experienced than a vast majority of most members here so I think it'd only be wise to take his advice...

Rawree makes a totally valid point in this thread, and I think you've responded in the wrong way John.

I'm sure the reason Rawree hasn't already started up his own well thought out comp because

a) when he did last time there was hardly anyone entering. and
b) He understands that 2 comps of the same nature on one forum won't work.

Lighten up John, who runs the competition is not hugely important.

I think the next FX 3D Challenge should be an animation that relates to Star Wars in general, but it shouldn't be just a rotating lightsaber or something, but rather something that could be 3D in a Star Wars movie like a ship, battle droid, Death Star trench, CG double doing some crazy move, a masive object being levitated by the force and composited into live-action, that kind of stuff and give about 2 or 3 months or so to complete. That would be sweet! biggrin

thanks. i had trouble modeling it. (i did try it with two pics but i didnt count the time for the first one) I had no clue what a water tower looked like so i just faked it. Also i didn't do any mapping for the water tower word. that probably took off a good bit of time. i think (now that i've looked at the pic from earlier again) that i'll try again. look for another soon!

You have to host it on the internet, so go to http://imageshack.us then browse and find the pic on your computer, then uplaod it. Copy one of the multiple URL's which are on that page, then on a post on fxhome go to where it says smilies/bbcode and click URL, then paste then URL*.

Hope this helps

those are pretty cool guys! Glad to see people entered. And I also agree with the animation contest, but not with starwars (lightsaber). becuase i wanna see something new, like CG robots, or fallling buildings, or cloth falling or blowing. i dont know anything, there are alot more things than just starwars. crazy

great idea! we should have an animation contest like that. altough i do agree with rawree. it should be a much more deatiled and restrictive competition so that there's a real way to tell which one is "the best".

I vote for A_Pickle's shiny round thing just because he got it to look like it belongs in the picture with the hint of distortion and those realistic reflections! Great job!

Apparently whiners such as myself don't even get noticed. This is what I meant about organising it properly.

i thought yours was really good rawree. At first it looked like it wasn't textured. You really have to set your screen just right to be able to see the texture. But i thought it was good. If it makes you feel better 1 vote for rawree.

Sorry rawree but i didn't know if yours was an actual submission or if you were just trying to threaten my country. But I'll gladly put yours in. Nothing personal...

Hey buddy, that was offtopic. Read the first post and you will see why. And don't make two posts in a row unless the topic is WAY dead. Use the Edit button at the top of your post. Like I just had to do.
