A small update to the Windows version of EffectsLab has been released that contains many fixes and introduces the new visual style. Let us know what you think of the new look!

IMPORTANT NOTE: Old project files will not open in this version. Please make sure you finish and render old projects BEFORE installing release 3.000.882.

If you had problems with the previous version of EffectsLab under Windows then please uninstall EffectsLab and delete the following folders before installing this new version:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Application Data\EffectsLab
C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temp\EffectsLab Cache

Please note these folders might be called something different if your OS language is not English and that the "Local Settings" and "Application Data" folders might be hidden by your OS.

This is a free update and all Windows EffectsLab users should download the new installer as soon as possible. We will be releasing a Mac version in the next couple of days.

Click here to go to the downloads page.

Click here to read about all the changes.

What's next?

The much anticipated preset system is not in this update but it is nearing completion. We'll have more news on that soon, we think it's an addition to EffectsLab that everyone will find extremely useful.

In the meantime we have the return of the filmmaking Spotlight articles, with some exciting interviews that should be of interest to the community. The first new Spotlight will hopefully be up in the next week.

There's lots of other things on the horizon as well, of course, but you'll just have to wait to find out about them!

Coooooool...

Since the engines now are smaller in the selector, it gives room to even more engines!

The new look looks much more professional (even if the "old" one looked very professional too). I would love if the same design were implented in Chromanator.

I prefered the old style, to me, this new style seems to evoke a sort of "template" design. It's hard to describe really... it just seems too amateurish looking, like its trying to look "too" cool. I thought the original style was far better. I also suggest against renaming the lightsaber system the neon light system. Again im not sure why I think that, maybe it has something to do with people will usually only use it for lightsabers and nothing else, and I forsee many more noobs asking "how doo u mak a lightsaba?!?!1"

I liked the old design better, but thats just me.

Schwar and FX Home Team,

I don't know what you guys did with this new version, but it fixed the problems I was having with memory issues and the program. It might have been something coding related. The attribute sliders work better now and it dosen't crash the program. (Even at maximum settings. / Full AA) Thank you guys so much for getting it fixed, nice update. I can't wait for the new preset update.

Later,

What about us Mac Users ?

Is EffectsLab DV going to turn into a mainly Windows only program, leaving us Mac Users always 2 or 3 versions behind ?

We have paid like anyone else and find it unfair if this is going to start happening.

Sorry if I sound bitter, but i have seen this type of thing happen too often and cant bear to see it start again sad

I hope your right mate smile

I have been waiting ages for the next release of EffectsLab DV and got shocked and a bit annoyed when i just saw that it was released as Windows only.

I always get grumpy when i've been working for 16 Hours straight and could sleep for a week.

The team have done an excellent job so far and i hope they keep it up smile

As stated in the original news post, we will have the Mac version out in no time at all. Our workflow means that the PC version is always ready slightly before the Mac version - not because the Mac is less important, but simply because that's the most efficient way of working on our programs.

Normally we wait until both the PC and Mac versions are ready before releasing an update, but as this fixes a few important issues we wanted to let the update out as soon as it was ready. Similarly, the Mac update will be out as soon as possible.

I am, at the moment, un-able to download the latest version. When I click the link for the update, I am brought to the download page, but it appears that the download is only for version "3.000.870", and not for the newest version ("3.000.882").

I continued to download it thinking that it may just be a case of the version number not being updated, but it downloaded as "3.000.870", and did not have any of the newest features mentioned above.

Sorry to add another problem for you guys, just thought I would mention it to you in case this isn't only an isolated incident. I appreciate any help you can give. I will check the download page later to see if there is any change for me.

Hope I like the new look.
Wizard.

Maybe your browser was caching the page?

Here's a direct link to download build 882:

Yes I believe that was it. Thank you for the direct link but I will not need it now. All that was necessary for me to do was to log out, and then delete my temporary internet files to make sure.

Thank you for your reply.

I just had an opportunity to review the whole program, and in some ways I would agree with evman101. I am actually at a cross roads on this matter. I like the new look of the effects preview pictures, but something about the new color scheme does not sit one hundred percent well with me.

I realize you can't make everyone happy, and I am certainly not going to discontinue use of the program, but perhaps there is a middle ground. Would it be possible to have a setting which would toggle between the two looks without compromising performance?

This way, you would not have to put out a single look, so the members who prefer the old look can have it, and the members who enjoy the new look can keep it. For the people who may be considering not getting any more upgrades out of concern for the programs esthetic appeal (it is possible lol), they do not have to worry about it, and can still enjoy the up-coming pre-sets, and any other enhancements you may come up with.

I acknowledge that this is not a "big" deal, but some members may have pre-conceived notions about what EffectsLab Dv should be. This is just a suggestion. I myself like most of the look change, other then the small change of color.

Ben3308, here are the screen captions you requested.

Note: I resized them as to not expand the page, but if they prove to be too big still I will make efforts to change them.

The load prompt.

Effects select/over all program look.

Nice update guys.

The final look-and-feel isn't quite finished yet, it won't be until the gold release. It is important to note that both EffectsLab and Chromanator 2 GUIs will be based around a grey palette as this makes grading your footage easier.

Multiple skins are not really an option, it might take a little while to get used to the look of the program (these preview versions are still slightly experimental after all) but we will get to something soon which will be considered final smile

Um, does this mean my project with the bad muzzle flashes and the 'being saved to the wrong keyframes' bug is lost forever (if I update, I can't open it, and if I render it, then, um, it will have those bad muzzle flashes that I don't want seen.)?

Will I be able to update straight from the version before this new one to the one with the presets? Or do I have to take every stepping stone there?

3.000.882 has an updated file spec ready to deal with the presets (which are already partly in this version only switched off). We hope this will be the final changes to the file specification.

New look is pretty cool, although I dislike the on/off (red/green) buttons. They were better when they were round.

And the text in EL is hideous:

Any suggestions?

Make sure you are using your EffectsLab key and not your Chromanator one

Malone,

Greetings from Chicago.

I realize my last post wasn't specific. I don't have a Chromanator key (although I have the program, but that's another story).

I've been fooling around with this but no luck thus far.

Could be worth using the Key Resender and getting a new copy of your EffectsLab key.
