Okay, I know there's a fantastic thread about stock footage but I'm practically desperate for this. redface I wondered if anyone knows where to get or could make some CGI shots of a city.

Thanks. smile

P.S: If anyone has seen "Catwoman" something like the city shots on that.

Check the' DXM Making Of' in the Movie Archive. I think it's number 6 or so from the top....they talk about where they got their 3d city and such.

I think alof of it was using other peoples models which they then put into a 3d scene in order to blow parts of it up.
If you're using Cinema4D then there's a city generator available for free here:

Hey, those buildings are great from Sci-Fi 3D. I wish I could use them though. I dont have 3Ds.

Does anyone know of a way to convert 3Ds files to some other format, say.... Blender? If so that would rock. And stuff.

You click on the citygen icon on the object and assign textures to the parts it labels. Grass, Building 1. etc etc

It does. He probably meant a Max file which usually only works in 3ds Max w/o 3rd party plugins. The extensions can be confusing when talking in forums and chats sometimes. The best way to convert a max file to a 3ds or .blend (or whatever it is) is find a 3ds Max user and ask him for a simple favor. You may have to retexture a lot, but the textures are in the download usually and materials should be easy to figure out based on renderings.

ah righty i thought so. In that case there shouldn't be a problem as most of those models are available in 3ds as well as max.

OMG! Solthar, that is PERFECT! Just like what I needed. Can you animate that so the camera moves over the buildings? What program is that?

P.S: Thanks for the links but I didn't want a Sci-Fi city. It was a normal CGI city like New York or something.

That's the Cinema4D random city generator Hybrid posted. Made withing 10 minutes. Quite cool.

And yes, that can easily be animated so the camera flies wherever you like.

Yeah, it comes without textures. I could use the ones I created for my CG city I'm using in NightCast. They don't fit too well though, if you look closely.

Hi.
Would anyone be willing to make a couple of short vids with those cities? I wouldn't be able to pay you, but you would be credited in the.... credits.

Please e-mail me if anyone's interested: lg010x8642@blueyonder.co.uk

ok,

I don't know how to change the amount of frames in an animation but i know the rest pretty well.

applying textures to buildings:
make your city editable and then click on the + on the object attributes manager and apply the textures to individual objects (building, skyscrapers, houses, chamneys, antenas, grass and roads)

animating the camera:

create a camera point it in the desired direction and zoom in, rotate and move the camera where you want it to go through - remember that you have to change keyframe every move until you have an animation.

hope it helps biggrin

Sollthar - are those textures only for you or would you be willing to share some of them? Please? biggrin

Also, how did you do the floating particles and the fog in the distance?

This place has some nice textures
http://www.absolutetextures.com/cityscape.html

A little costly tho, but they do offer a few free ones on their site.

hey

i can apply textures, but they get morphed around the building all weird

can someone please explain how to make the texture appear on only the walls of the buildings and not the roofs

Plus i agree with pooky, it would be cool if you could make those textures useable to everyone.

This is because you haven't scaled your textures, there should be some form of texture displacement option within citygen for each texture.

SMB wrote:

Yes, Apply a roof texture in the "Roof" area of CityGen.

SMB wrote:

Nice, of course. But potentially illegal as well as counter-productive in terms of Sollthar's filmic ambitions. Assuming he hasn't created each individual texture then some will be from sources such as Texture DVD's and such which are often licensed on "One User" terms i.e. - illegal to share.
And in the case that Sollthar has created all his textures himself, then it'd be pretty crazy of him to share them for free, even more crazy when the film he plans to use them to create effects for, which biggest project ever - Nightcast isn't even released yet.

Have a little courtesy guys, I wouldn't expect a studio share their raw materials. razz

And whilst I'm posting, I should also mention that CityGen isn't ideal for anything other than fast flybys of city's. Areas which you are planning on having detailed action within or any long pause should be entirely manually created else your buildings will look very obviously generated/poor.

-Hybrid.
