Hi all, as you may know I am planning to make a Star Wars fan film and I have just modelled a rough/possible new jedi temple smile

Obviously there is still a lot to do like textures, but what do you think, I can add to it.

Suggestions for improvements are welcome as always smile

Thanks

I really like it but do something with the top. Everything is complex but the top is just a basic cone. Maybe add a few cones and intersect razz Or cut groves in it, other than that though great job.

Take out the pieces that jut out on the top. But other than that it looks real cool.

Hmm, the apparent cube extrude on the top looks odd. The flat surfaces look massiv compared to a human and wouldn't serve much purpose. Just looks strange IMO, I think you should probably make them smaller. After you texture, I may discover that that is a portal leading to another place, or something as simple as a massive window.

Its really comeing along man. hey man, if you want, i play the game Star Wras Glaxues, its like WoW but star wars. If you wish, i can take screen shots of any starwars thing you want if you need a model. But other than that, it looks nice. But like someone said, i would place other buildings around it, which are connected to it.

Cheers alex, I am glad you like it smile If you wouldn'y mind taking screenshots, it is just that the film is based after ROTJ with a new jedi temple so I thought that I would try and model one smile

I know that it needs buildings around it, but does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks again guys smile

As usual I could just say "add more random detail", but this time I think you need to add more "functional detail".
What I mean is that you need to think of it as a real building that your designing here:

There are at the moment no doors, these can be quite useful when trying to get in wink
Although the Jedi like their peace and quiet I'm sure they also like a bit of fresh air and might want to look out at the world from time to time, I'd consider adding some windows and perhaps the odd balcony or two.
As a "religious" group I'd imagine the Jedi would have a few emblems or banners of perhaps statues of gargoyles decorating the outside.

If you consider these kinds of things then you'll have models that actually look like they serve a purpose - when you're building a space rocket why not build a fuel cap and access hatches on it, don't worry if you'll use them or not just remember that they would be there if it was real.

Oh and add more random detail wink

Rawree, Thanks for the tips smile I will try and see what I can do but I think it will be hard for me to create doors and windows from the current cube, so I think I will create the from seperate shapes.

I have got a balcony, sort of, it is on the the last one, but I can make it more detailed wink

Here is an outline

Thanks again

Yeah I wasn't sure if that was a balcony or not. Again though it gives you a chance for more detail as you'd need doors to get onto the balcony, look for any excuse for detail - that's what really makes a model wink

what it needs is a sense of scale so people commenting on it can actually understand what each part is and how big it really is. Just an idea might help peope with the suggestions n stuff

jotoki - Thanks for the tip smile obvously it isn't going to be this big when it get round to the final stages, it will be bigger, lol smile The thing is I don't actually know what sizes are, I suppose it will be like the size of a skyscrapper if that helps?

Sorry I can't give you any more help, it is just that I am not really sure, lol

Thanks for the tips smile

hey fair enough, but maybe you should decide that fairly soon as it will probably then influence the design. i'm no 3d expert tho , far from it so its strictly IMHO

jotoki - I have just done a search for the heights of skyscrapers, and I think the main temple should maybe be around a similar sort of height to the Empire State Building, which is 381m/1,250ft.

This might be to big and can be changed but it is just a rough idea on size ant that, but it can be changed if need be smile

Hope this helps you more smile

Thanks again

Well...

That 'door' on the balcony is about one 15th of the overall size of the building.

Now if we suppose that the building is around 381 meters tall, by my calculations that means that doorway is about 25 meters high!

I think what you lack is a general sense of proportion. You need to work on getting things to be realistic sizes in comparison to one another.

Also, I echo what Rawree says entirely: You need to think about the way the building works. How many floors are there. How do people get from one floor to another. What's in the penthouse? Where do ships land - on the top? Are there windows in this building?

When you've thought about "hypothetical" details like this, then you can start to realise them in the physical details of the model.

Hope this helps smile

Cheers,
Arktic.

how about a large 'first floor' raising the building up and separating it from encroaching buildings in the area? it could also act as a plaza for the building.

the tower would be sitting in the middle of a raised plaza. this could be a grass covered area with moving figures to show the scale of the building. there could also be landing pads there with arrivals going on. this could also establish size of the building in hundreds of feet. the plaza could be an 8 pointed star with other details.
