Uk magazines like PC Pro, PC Format, Digit. They're full versions, they usually do these free offers when new versions of the software are released and offer a reduced upgrade deal. Just check the pc magazine shelves in your local newsagents

Acquisition Hardware:
Canon GL2 (also three Canon ZR## cameras for motion capture)
Canon 20D DLSR

Plus, when needed, I've rented and borrowed stuff like DVCPro and enve Sony CineAlta cameras. Much nicer images than the fun little GL2.

Computer Hardware:
Dell 8400
HP Pavilion ZD7000 laptop
Mac Dual G4 1.25

Software (this list looks long, but a lot (not all) of the software is just standard issue stuff that comes with being a PixelCorps member)
Photoshop
After Effects
Shake
Cinema4D
MatchMover Pro
Stitcher
ImageModeler
FormZ
XSI
MotionBuilder
Media Studio Pro
ParticleIllusion
dvGarage 3DToolkit

There might be some other stuff kicking around the drives, but that's generally what I use week-to-week anyway.

You would be surprised how quickly a 800MHz G4 can run most editing tasks. I know people still using 400MHz G4s just fine! Wouldn't run EffectsLab that well, thats for sure wink

Sony DCR-PC110 with manual focus attachment.
My friend's newly-acquired Canon GL2

Dell Dimension 8000, 2GB RAM, 3.4gHz processor, 180GB HDD, 19in LCD monitor

Dell Inspiron 4150, 256MB RAM, 1.8gHz processor, 30GB HDD, 15in Plasma Display (not my editing comp)

Vegas Video 3 (for final rendering, grading, sound, and most editing)
Video Explosion Version 4 ( just got it for stock footage and extra plugins)
Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 (for whenever I want to use alot of layers)
EffectsLabDV (particles, when necessary)
AlamDV2 (any miscellaneous effect)

Photoflex QuickSet Softlight Kit

and all that stuff listed is not mine (save the Inspiron, EL and ADV2), it's either borrowed or used while the owner is present.

But most people are forgetting what most good filmmakers need to use, and that's....
Talent.

If I had any money to buy a GL2, or a G5, or Magic Bullet, Chromanator, I would, but I don't, so I borrow and I make do with what I can get. And you know what? My movies are usually not half bad. Expensive stuff doesn't make a filmmaker good. Talent and ingenuity does.

The question isnt about what makes a good film maker, just enquiring about what equipment etc other film makers use. I find this quite a useful topic as i've seen a few programs mentioned that i wasn't aware of, and so I'll be looking them up and seeing if they may benefit me....

2 GHz iMac G5 1GB Ram 250 GB HD
LaCie 160 GB Firewire External Hard Drive (Broken sad, my last project may be lost)

Final Cut Studio HD (Includes FCP, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, Soundtrack Pro, and Compressor smile)

Adobe After Effects 6.5 Pro

No, but I've gathered it over the years. The computer is for college, I purchased Premiere and After Effects to do my film The Lord of the Rings, The Much Abbreviated Account (currently on fxhome), (I had used them both profusely in many classes before I purchased them). I've had the hard drive for several years (reimbursement for work). Then I bought Final Cut Studio for two reasons: 1) I needed to finish my LOTR project and author it for DVD, and 2) Premiere 6.5 no longer functions correctly with MacOS Tiger. Everything else is either free or owned by an educational institution (of which I am a part).
