I am sorry but what is a backdrop

This may sound really bad, but I am new and I need to know what a backdrop really is? Sorry guess for the question but I want to know. Please do not delet this.

A backdrop is a background composited into an image, so tha tit looks like your acting is climbing a mountain, skydiving etc, when he is actually just acting in front of a a blue-greenscreen.
Aternately, you can use a matte to seperate your subject from the background and composite him onto a backdrop.
