After many years of hard work, we’re proud to introduce you to the first of our new product range – CompositeLab DV and the complete version of EffectsLab DV. Designed for the low-budget DV enthusiast, both products offer sophisticated visual effects tools with a friendly interface and a remarkable price.

compose the perfect shot

The full power of digital compositing is now available to DV filmmakers with CompositeLab DV. Fully optimised for DV footage, CompositeLab DV can get amazing results from low quality footage and difficult lighting situations, reducing the need for expensive greenscreen materials and studio lighting.

CompositeLab DV provides a huge selection of powerful features at a price that any filmmaker can afford:

• Perfect greenscreen and bluescreen compositing, optimised for DV footage
• A selection of colour grading filters add realism and mood
• Extensive preset system for instant setups and grading schemes
• Access to forthcoming filter preset library at FXhome.com
• Brand new interface for speed and ease-of-use
• Timeline enables easy access to all aspects of your project at all times
• Flexible freehand masking and garbage mattes
• Keyframe animation with smooth tweening
• Effective spill suppression system
• Supports Quicktime, AVI and image stream formats
• Full size canvas display for clarity and precision

For Chromanator users thinking of upgrading, CompositeLab DV includes a completely redesigned interface, more grading and compositing filters, increased stability and an enhanced preset library. There is also a brand new realtime timeline interface that removes the need for lengthy temp rendering and revolutionises project workflow.

CompositeLab DV is scheduled for a December release.

CompositeLab DV £64.99
Upgrade for Chromanator users £34.99

blockbuster power at your fingertips

We’re excited to announce that EffectsLab DV is now complete and will be released at the same time as CompositeLab DV. This new version provides a completely revamped user interface, many more filters, additional effects and a full preset system.

EffectsLab DV is perfect for filmmakers needing to create astounding visual effects on a small budget:

• Amazing particle engine for weather, dust, smoke, fireball effects etc
• Authentic muzzle flash system turns your props into deadly weapons
• Freehand neon light drawing creates lasers, lightswords and energy beams
• Optics engine generates hundreds of convincing lens flares and light sources
• Create and use hundreds of effects and grading presets
• Support for light-based (explosions, fire etc) and alpha stock footage
• Fun and quirky lens distortion filters
• Selection of colour grading filters to match your effects to your live action
• Increased media compatibility

All users of the preview release version of EffectsLab DV will get a free upgrade. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everybody that has supported us by purchasing the preview version: your dedication and faith helped make its continued development possible for the team.

The complete version of EffectsLab DV is scheduled for a December release.

If I'm not mistaken it'd work out cheaper to wait for CLab to be released and then just purchase that, else you'll end up having spent more and owning an outdated program. wink

Congratulations to the team. I am aware of how much of yourselves you put into these products, and the site. The announcement of your progress must be rewarding, and I can only imagine how much hard work it has taken to get to this point.

I would like to continue supporting the company in any way that I can, and if I get to have fun with the programs while doing so, all the better. That is why I plan to purchase CompositeLab DV, and I am certain it is going to live up to the line of great products I have had the opportunity to witness in my time here.

I have had many problems with my credit card provider in the past, and because of this, choose not to buy products on the internet using my own. Perhaps I will be fortunate enough to use a friends pay pal account, once again, and continue to enjoy the most current of FXhome products. This truly sounds like it is going to be great and I look forward to it.

Congratulations guys.
Wizard.

Only a week now...

Congratulations, I especially like the line that says "this is just the tip of the iceberg." Very teasing. Well, I know what I'm getting for Christmas...

PS. I hope the rest of the iceberg includes Digigrade, or McGrademiester DV or whatever you're going to call it wink

This is, indeed, good news. Tell me, have you tested the new Effects Lab on PCs using the latest QT Pro? I've been having serious problems, I think, with the preview release and QT Pro 7.0.3. Thanks, and congratulations on the announcement.

Is it worth getting CompositeLab DV if you already own Vegas? Besides the great green screen features, don't most NLEs already have the features of this new product?

lisab : All the people who'll purchase CompositeLab DV will have an NLE as well. I don't know any NLE which has the fantastic animation controls of CompositeLab DV or the high quality keying and masking. biggrin

Wait, so the reason Digigrade isn't coming out is because CompositeLabDV IS Digigrade, right?

Just to clear things up....CompositeLab DV isn't DigiGrade. CompositeLab DV and EffectsLab DV both have a few grading filters to aid their specific purposes (ie, to help you blend effects in with your footage, or to help blend several layers together), but they are not designed for specific grading like DigiGrade would have been.

DigiGrade is still on the backburner for now. Sales of the new products will probably dictate its fate...

The other day I was thinking to myself that my copy of Commotion is crappy and outdated. I was thinking I really needed to buy After Effects, but there was no way I would be able to get the money for it...

And lo and behold, Composite Lab is announced! I can't wait to try out the demo; I'm really looking forward to this.

Excellent news! I have on question though: will the "revamped" UI on EffectsLab be much different from the current effectslab release? I've been trying to learn effectslab and hope that I won't have to learn it again with the new release if the interface is different from the current one.

You won't have to relearn EffectsLab DV...

Our new universal platform (which I've been calling "Charger", although I've never told anyone that) is a massively enhanced and optimised version of the one which sits under EffectsLab preview - I doubt a single line of the code has been left untouched.

EffectsLab preview users will notice straight away that there has been a huge amount of time and effort put in to the updated interface (thank you beta testers). There are new functions to try and (maybe most importantly) a amazingly simple integration of the all-new FXpreset engine.

From the very first time you use the final interface you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

The final version of Charger vastly improves EffectsLab DV, but for Chromanator users moving to CompositeLab DV its a revolution...

More information on the programs and Charger soon...

Great to hear about the awsome news, I will defenitely upgrade to Composite Lab. Will the final version of Effects Lab be able to create a lightning effect, similar to the lightsword effect, or not?

I can't wait for the final release!

Cheers,

Indeed, very familiar. The same core concepts remain the same, but with every aspect tweaked, upgrade, enhanced and otherwise spiffyfied. Current eLab users should have no trouble at all getting to grips with all the new stuff.

A lot of the changes have been to speed things up or make the interface more friendly, so overall workflow will be much easier and faster. I'll make sure I do a little mini-tutorial for existing users, outlining all the new bits and pieces, to make the process as painless as possible.

I'm seriously happy about the name change. Chromanator sounds kinda macho and jokey. Composite lab DV on the other hand sounds like a real app. Which brings me to this: I only just purchased chromanator after wrestling with the dodgy name for a few days. I hope those guys at fxhome are still gonna provide updates and fixes for the product over the next year (until I can budget for composite lab).

Wow...this is too good...

I havn't even visited this site in ages, much less posted. But this is just awsome. Now I know to save my money that was reserved for Chromanator and spend it on CompositeLabDV. And I like the new EffectsLab logo.

So yeah...really awsome stuff.

Nice wallpaper.

if you can, try and add some more transparency to the "effectslab dv"s and "compositelab dv"s that are behind the main ones. its a little dizzying to see them all at once, and its a little hard to read.\

EDIT: can i use these in my sig?

It doesn't sound like you really did anything new with composite Lab DV other than intergrate the workflow features of EffectsLab. This alone makes it a definate upgrade, but I really hope you added motion tracking.

I have two questions that I beleive have been asked, but I never saw a reply. I'd ask in the big chat, but am afraid I may not be able to be there and/or may not get my questions in, if there are lots of people participating. So here they are:

1) Will the new EffectsLab be able to do the "lightning" effect? It's really similar to a ligtsaber, it just needs random bends and arches included (that can be adjusted), and endpoints.

2) Will both software work well with Quicktime 7 Pro? Others have reported lots of problems with their software and Quicktime 7 Pro.

Oh, and rogolo you tried to fill in the "DV" on both titles on your wallpapers, it didn't fill in solid and looks weird. Also, I agree with what someone else said, the other text behind the main title looks funky because the foreground text doesn't stand out enough. Other than that, it's pretty cool man.

And no need to welcome me, I've been around a while, just haven't posted before.

Thanks,

There's no automatic lightning effect. If there's enough of a demand we might consider looking into it for the future, you never know.

2) Will both software work well with Quicktime 7 Pro? Others have reported lots of problems with their software and Quicktime 7 Pro.
We've been testing it extensively with QT7 and QT7 Pro and all seems to be fine. If you're still having QT7 problems with various apps, make sure you are updated to the latest version (especially if you're on a PC).

And no need to welcome me, I've been around a while, just haven't posted before.

Klut you might have won, but for a few problems. The most glaring is your enlarged EffectsLab comet. You can't just blow up raster images, they look terrible when you do that. You need to recreate the comet at the resolution you want to use it at (or larger). The same kind of thing shows up in the "EL" film frame around the edges of the E & L. Also, your hand-painting of greys in the background behind the letters looks terrible. On the bright side, your CompositeLab one looks awesome. The only thing there that I would say, is utilize the new logo's because the font and such is so cool.

But as it stands, I'd have to say that whomever it was that posted just the plain logos on a solid background, takes the cake for now. Rogolo, as I mentioned, has a few problems with his, such as being way to busy (not enough contrast to emphasize the main logos), I get dizzy looking at it (sorry rogolo, not dogging on you, just see a lot of potential in your abilities if you're humble enough to accept some criticism and work on it).

I thought i'd post an attempt at a background:

It's not great, but if I could only find the font they use unsure . I Think it's probably a tweaked version of a standard one.

Er... you should keep this in mind: Simplicity is key. All I see now is a ton of randomly thrown in Photoshop filters/layer styles and ugly fonts confused

Oh well, it's the thought that counts.

I used Graphics Converter (a Mac program) for the transparency effects, and a greeting-card-creator-type program called Print Shop, made by Broderbund. The font in the middle is 'Anger is a gift' (found on dafont.com), and the fonts that say 'COMPOSITE THE PERFECT SHOT' and stuff is Ben Pioneer Bold (also found on dafont.com).

I did a simple text effect (bevel) for the 'COMPOSITE THE PERFECT SHOT' and toned down the transparency to about 40%, or something. For the '...prepare for the revolution...', I just added a glow of my specified color. Lastly, for the Effects Lab DV stuff, I added a bit of white glow, toned down the opacity anywhere from 10% to 30% and layered them.

Print Shop isn't REALLY made for these purposes, but it gets the job done! (I can't afford PrintShop, and Gimp won't install correctly, so I'm kinda stuck with it anyway.)

Huh.

I still must ask these questions MYSELF:

Were you planning all of these new releases while developing [the oringinal] EffectsLab..? Or, rather, was it some sort of sudden bit of whimsy?

Whatever happened to DigiGrade? It's obviously been assimilated into one of these packages. It's still difficult to tell.

Oh well; I'm still a dedicated consumer and supporter. Before all of this new stuff I had Chromy, AlamDV2 and then EffectsLab. And now it's all this.

Still, and still respectfully, I can't help but wonder how this all effects the younger people. There's a lot of money at stake and new decisions to make. Hmm. Did you ever really have a large "PRO" consumer base with a need to satisfy..? I thought it was us common folk with a "how'd they do that?" mentality to deal with...

You've entered a new realm as far as your products are concerned. And, very quickly. Will the little people eventually be phased-out?

The new website and products have been part of the long-term plan for a long time. Plans inevitably shift and become more focused as time progresses, but everything that has been released this month had been planned from the start.

Whatever happened to DigiGrade? It's obviously been assimilated into one of these packages. It's still difficult to tell.
DigiGrade hasn't been assimilated into any of the new packages, although VisionLab HD has a few advanced grading filters which are more in DigiGrade's potential territory.

DigiGrade is more than just a collection of nice grading filters, though. It requires a completely different interface which is specialised to do the required task. Just as EffectsLab has been designed to carry out its tasks with efficiency, the same would go for DigiGrade.

Whether DigiGrade ever sees the light of day depends on how well all these products sell. We haven't incorporated it into any of the new programs though, because we'd still in theory like to see it come to fruition. Time (and sales) will tell!

Still, and still respectfully, I can't help but wonder how this all effects the younger people. There's a lot of money at stake and new decisions to make.
We hope it won't affect the younger people at all, as we still offer the DV versions as we always have done. It's important to note that the latest DV versions are more powerful than anything we've released before, so we definitely are still supporting the young/no-budget market.

Hmm. Did you ever really have a large "PRO" consumer base with a need to satisfy..?
In this game you can't sit still, if you just cater for your existing market then you won't get anywhere. We feel there is a sizeable portion of the current userbase that would be interested in the Pro apps (as would seem to be correct judging by the general response over the last month-or-two), but it's also a means of reaching new areas of the market. Same goes for VisionLab HD, which is aimed at another part of the market again.

But just because we're reaching out to other markets, it doesn't in any way mean that we're abandoning our core, original market. You guys got us here: we're not going to ever forget that. In fact, the higher-end products such as VisionLab HD should help us support the no-budget/young filmmakers even more, as it will give us the resources to continue to develop low budget software.

I thought it was us common folk with a "how'd they do that?" mentality to deal with...
It still is, we just want to deal with as many different types of folk as we can. smile

You've entered a new realm as far as your products are concerned. And, very quickly.
Seems quite slowly to me! We've wanted to get to this stage for a long, long time and it's very exciting to finally get there.

Will the little people eventually be phased-out?
Absolutely not.
