If you are an EffectsLab DV preview user that wants to update to the latest version, simply head on over to the downloads page.

If you want to upgrade to one of the new products or EffectsLab Pro, you might want to take a look at the info pages, which can be found by clicking the Software menu item at the top of the page.

Hope you all like the new software - we can't wait to see them used in your movies!

Dear Tarn:

Great News! Congratulations on your new products.

As an owner of both Effects Lab DV and Chrominator, I visited the store looking for the special upgrade price. Not finding it means to me that either my "Old Timer's Disease" has kicked in or the shareholders have not yet approved the special price for owners of multiple products.

Should I look at the store again?

Make sure you hit Ctrl+F5 to do a hard refresh on the store page, to ensure you're seeing the new layout. If that doesn't work, I'm sure malone will have some tips.

There have been 2 small bugs found in 934 (how annoying).

Bug #1 is on both Mac and PC when you UNDO moving and effect object (CompositeLab DV and Pro are therefore fine on the PC)

Bug #2 is Mac only, and its that when you try and bring up the "Set Length" widget there is a script error.

1000935 is therefore being uploaded as we speak to fix these issues. Quite a lot to upload, they'll be with you in 2 hours.

If you own both EffectsLab and Chromanator you can upgrade to VisionLab for the special price of £209.99. If you check out the store page it's the last upgrade option under the VisionLab box.

FXHOME RULES THE WORLD!!! I JUST GOT BACK FROM SCHOOL...AND..YEAH...THIS RULES!

(sorry for all caps. I'm just SO TOTALLY EXCITED!! biggrin)

edit: When I mouse-over the "FX PRESET" thing, it says AlamDV2 plug-in maker. Should this be changed to FXHome Preset maker? or something?

I also find it a tad annoying when someone's vertical icons expand further than the post.

but still... AWESOME!

Dear Forum Members:

Thanks for your help in locating the Effects Lab DV + Chrominator upgrade option.

There seems to be a defect in the way the page loads in Safari on the Mac.

fxhome.com/store/ on the PC shows the full version and a selection of 4 upgrade options. On the Mac, only the full version displays. All software is up to date on both systems.

I don't have safari to be able to test. But are you sure you are logged in when browsing with safari. If you are not logged in you won't see any upgrade options like you are describing

This is going to take a while to get used to. This new forum is extremely cluttered looking, even though I don't think the posts take up any more space than before, it just looks like it because everythings bigger and more stand-outish.

I'm going to throw in a suggestion, which is to remove the lightsabers, and stop calling it "force". It's obvious to me that you're going for a far more professional look than before, and those lightsabers look extremely amateur and greatly out of place with the "sleek" style of everything else. If it's for old times sake, why not have something a little less flashy to show who has more rated posts? It's just entirely out of place in the new forums.

I like the look of individual cinema pages (like, for movies), though. The bigger images is a good idea, however, the entire cinema section is inconsistent with the rest of the site. You've got a nice White/Grey motif going on and then BLAMMO! Back to the dark blues? Why?

Also, what about users who don't want to upgrade from Chromanator to composite lab or whatever, are we not allowed to put movies in the cinema that use chromanator now? I don't see the option, yet AlamDV is still there. (EDIT: I see chromanator now. Nevermind. It just doesn't show up on the forums. My mistake) A product that you have been trying to get away from the name of due to disinterest amongst peers and potential customers, from what I recall, specifically at Theforce.net, which coincidentally is a lot what the new forums here look like. Interesting.

Oh well, I'm disappointed.

Edit2: Also, this may not be true, but I think my opinion on this matters at least SLIGHTLY considering I've posted here more than anyone. Not that I'm bragging, that's actually kind of sad. No offence, but I see my frequency of posting going down considerably at the moment due to the fact that I can't really stand the look of the new forums. Not yet anyway.

Edit3:

Malone wrote:

Hmm.. So we've already paid that for the individual softwares, and now we have to pay it again to get the combination of the two, plus some blurs and grading tools? I think I've said this before, but the new features don't really seem to warrant the near double price. But I'm eager to learn how they do.

Same here, I like the name above the avatars better.

And as ACulag said, I think the color scheme is inconsistent. You've got a black, grey, and red text motif, yet the forum have yellows and blues in them? And the search button is blue? It looks like you cropped someone else's search bar and slapped it on your site. Same with the posts. They just seem more cluttered now, I dunno why really, they just do.

Whatever, I'll adapt. But change the username thing!

EDIT: Oh, and now there's now mouse-over feature to get to the submenus of the site, such as forums. Before, I could get to the forums in one click while at school. Now, the pages take longer to load, and it takes two clicks. Not a big deal, but it DOES deter me from the forums more, something which you pretty much run alot of business and get alot of prospective customers off of.

EDIT2: In the presets section, you should hyperlink the thumbnails of the presets, so it's less cumbersome to cycle through the details of each, like how the AlamDV plugins were hyperlinked.

Well, I'll answer some of these questions...

Search button is blue because it stands out. Nobody every used it before and we think its partly because you didn't notice it. We hope you do now.

The cinema is meant to be a totally different colour just like the QuickTime section at Apple.com. Apple's site (one of the strongest design companies in the world) has half the sections in totally different colours. Check out the "i" apps, the pro apps, the QuickTime section -> all different.

The cinema is styled to look similar to the QuickTime section of Apple as this is where we all go to download real movie trailers. We were thinking it would be nice to put your movies in a similar content and most of you guys seem to think it works really well. We will be playing with the designs some more, this isn't a 100% finished site. Just like the last FXhome we'll have a few months of tweaks and changes ahead.

The forum is far less cluttered than before and much easier to read, but I do take note about the Names, we will try and move them somewhere better soon.

Aculag : I really don't get your issues with VisionLab HD - if you don't like the price we offer the consumer "Pro" range with most of the same features and our consumer licence.

Gleam, glow, the muzzle flash engine, the Optic engine, the neon engine and some of the grading filters could easily sell as commercial After Effects plugins for $75-450 each!

Just from looking at the competition we have for those its about $950-1400 dollars of plugins AND you need After Effects to use them. We offer the specialised program interface as well and a ton of more basic filters, a particle engine and the presets engine all for around $500 in VisionLab HD - thats great value!

When you consider the "Pro" range does very nearly as much and is 40% less then its insane value (even better if you get it on a discount). This is why every business manager we talk to says we should increase our prices as soon as they investigate our competition.

I'm having trouble finding an explanation of the differences in licensing for the different products.

Is this explained somewhere?

If I want to use effects in say, a local commercial, can i use the pro version, or do I need vision lab? ( Obviously I can't credit fxhome in a commercial.)

What if I'm lucky enough to sell a film? Is crediting FXHome enough, if I used Pro in post production?

And if it's strictly for amateurs, why are they called the "Pro" versions?

Also, I notice the fireball in your screen captures isn't on the (rather thin) list of presets. Will these types of effects be appearing soon? The engines are great, but I miss the AlamDV days when you could download a whisp of smoke when you needed it without having to reinvent the wheel.

Paint Shop Pro is no Photoshop, but still has "pro" in the name. Theres effectively no difference in the naming scheme here either. Its just a word which is an easy way of identifying a more feature-rich version of effectively the same product.

The DV and Pro versions require a credit to FXhome.com to be included on the production. If you are unable to provide a credit, then I'm afraid the DV and Pro applications cannot be used.

In these circumstances, VisionLab HD would be required.

The concept is that amateur (ie, non-financed users - not a reflection on talent at all) users do not have much in the way of funds, so instead we require a credit. That way they get to use cheap software, and we get to have our software promoted on their productions.

Professionals (ie, financed) however will have the funds needed for the project, in which case they will be able to purchase VisionLab HD with its full commercial licence (which is still a tiny amount of money compared to similar products).

What if I'm lucky enough to sell a film? Is crediting FXHome enough, if I used Pro in post production?
As long as the production had a credit, that would be fine. The deal would work out that you were able to use cheap software, and we get good publicity from your production. We have produced an animated credit you can place on the end of your movies:

http://tarn.fxhome.com/creditspreview.avi

We will be producing additional credit clips as soon as possible, so you can pick a suitable one for your production.

And if it's strictly for amateurs, why are they called the "Pro" versions?
That's primarily a way to separate them from the DV versions, and to avoid confusion with VisionLab HD.

Also, I notice the fireball in your screen captures isn't on the (rather thin) list of presets.
The preset library will be growing over time as both the team and users submit their own creations. Which fireball are you referring to?

Will these types of effects be appearing soon? The engines are great, but I miss the AlamDV days when you could download a whisp of smoke when you needed it without having to reinvent the wheel.
That's exactly the point of the preset library. smile The AlamDV2 plugins library was miniscule when it started, and that grew to over 1000! With a little time, I'm sure the preset library will become an amazing resource.

Thanks, Tarn, for the quick reply and simple explanation. I'm sure I'll be upgrading, but I'm glad I have until the end of the year to puzzle out exactly how.

The fireball was in one of the stills from the chat the other day. It was labeled something like "fireball with smoke trail"

Another question; can presets utilize more than one effect? Like the fireball with smoke trail? Or do they have to be combined on the timeline?

Hello. I was wondering what the normal upgrade prices are. Not the current 'discounted' ones.

For example if I bought effectslab dv now and in a couple of months time upgraded to pro, how much would the upgrade be then?

Cool movie, you should add it to the software pages of EffectsLab and CompostieLab so that people knows how to add a credit to you in their movies.

After having a chance to tool around with the VL demo version, I've noticed it seems to run pretty slowly on my G5. Is this normal, or am I doing something wrong? It runs about as fast as Effects Lab ran on my old G4.

Edit: I like the Tommy Gun flare, and the X,Y rotation over the flare itself is a great addition. Helps a lot.

I can only speak from a PC point-of-view since I don't have a Mac. But, all things being equal, I've found VLab to perform identical to ELab on Windows. E.g. a project with one lightsword performs the same in both VLab and ELab.

Obviously the more objects and filters that you put into the project, the slower it's going to take to preview render each frame. And since VLab has the full swagger of features, there is more potential for it to slow down if you add a rediculous amount of filters. smile

Did you try lowering the canvas preview render quality?

I don't know enough about Macs to suggest performance tuning, but I'm sure the usual things apply -- memory, swap file size & hard disk fragmentation.

Cool movie, you should add it to the software pages of EffectsLab and CompostieLab so that people knows how to add a credit to you in their movies.
They're gonna make a page full of different credit movies or something. It will be at http://www.fxhome.com/credits/

Thats strange, we've actually improved the performance a lot on the PC and the Mac since EffectsLab Preview. Is it possible you're running the canvas at "Full" quality rather than "Half" which makes a massive difference?

There are some filters like the blurs and composite filters which were not in EffectsLab Preview which can eat up a lot of CPU. There is also the realtime playback feature which skips frames on playback to get as near to the correct time as possible, over several loops it render all the frames in to RAM until its playing back realtime and full frame rate (like After Effects). This can make stuff seem slower if you're expecting it to just work frame-by-frame on playback - there is an option to disable realtime playback in the Playback menu.

If none of this helps, and you still have EffectsLab Preview to hand, any additional information you could give us on where its got slower would help us pin point any problems and we'll see what we can do.

I had it on the lowest settings, and was just putting a single muzzle flash on the canvas.

Would the size of the video matter? It was 1920x1200.
