I've downloaded the NEW PRESETS in the download area and tried to "Import Preset Pack..", but nothing happens.
I've tried just like the manual says. Nothing happens!

Just so you know, the presets availible right now are already included in the versions of the program that you download.

Yeah, same thing happened to me. I thought they didnt load up, but actually, when you click on an effect in the toolbox, let's say Optics, all the presets for the Optics effects will appear.
On the timeline, in the lower left corner if you right click a clip, and select "Apply Preset" you will find all the grading plugins and such.

I'm having a similar problem. I cant get any of the presets that i have downloaded to work. Only the effects that came with EffectsLab work. When i click on "Import FxPreset Pack" the green loading bar flashes up then the preset is no where to be found within EffectsLab. I think it may be because my preset folder is located- Macintosh HD/Users/Chris/Documents/FxHome/EffectsLab Pro/Preset whereas EffectsLab Pro is in the application folder. Should the FxHome folder be in my library? The same also happens for CompositeLab Pro with the folders in the same place.
p.s. I have tried uninstalling and re installing both apps.

I've also had a similar program. However, I do know how to use the presets for muzzleflashes, lightsabers, optics, and particle effects. The problem is that how do i use the presets for grading? (night vision, serious speed, etc.)

As TimmyD said above, by right
clicking on an effect, or video of your choice, and selecting "Apply preset
", you should be supplied with the entire list of grading presets.

I do not believe the location of your folders is incorrect, or the cause of your newly installed presets not showing up. There are two preset folders, which are meant for different things. The folder in your documents is for viewing your presets, and deleting them if you wish. The preset folder in your applications folder is used for installing presets, and does not contain a list or selection of previously installed presets, I believe.
If you are selecting "Import FXpreset pack
", and installing a preset (example: a preset for the "Neon light
" effect), but are selected on "Particles
" at the time, you will not see the newly installed preset in the current list. You would then have to select the neon light engine in order to view that preset list, where the newly installed preset should be. I hope that is clear and indeed what is occurring.

Thanks Wizard it was very clear, but unfortunately did not solve my problem, i have tried to install "Blue Energy Ball" particle preset, "Light Snow", "Cartoon Rain" and "Shiny Lightsword" but none of them appear in the preset list. Luckily this is not a huge problem for me now as i do not have any projects running although it is rather annoying since i want to familiarize myself with the new features in EffectsLab.
Any more ideas?

This must be a bug because I am having the same problem. I have also tried to install the "Blue Energy Ball" and it does not show up in the appropriate preset list. It also does not appear in the preset folder. Could this be a problem unique to Mac users?

Would you mind posting the method you are using, along with all
of the steps you are taking when installing the presets? This may be a good idea for everyone here who is encountering these difficulties, so that we can all get on the same page, and make sure that the majority of problems here are not simply small mistakes during installation.

Open existing project
In the Toolbox click on the "Effects Tab"
In the Effects Preset section click on the drop down menu
Choose "Import FX Preset Pack..."
Navigate to the downloaded Preset file
Cllick on the file name and then click open
Something appears on the screen but it is too fast to see
Click once on the particles section in the toolbox
The new preset does not appear
NOTE: The preset also does not appear when you use the "Import Preset Pack..." option from the "FILE" menu

I find this problem to be very strange, to say the least. I attempted to download, and install the "Blue Energy Ball
" preset, and it worked fine for me. I was leaning towards the possibility that this problem was Macintosh related, and that there was some kind of conflict between Mac's, and presets created on Windows, but that does not seem likely, and has been disproved by alltheshway encountering the same issue on a PC.
At the moment, I can see no reason why it should work for myself, and not for you guys. The only difference I could see is that I am running on the first EffectsLab Pro release, and not the most current version; however, I can't see that as being the cause. There have been a few threads that discuss how the file being improperly named can cause issues, so perhaps a quick look through the most recent topics can shed some light on this.
Another possible fix would be to re-install EffectsLab/VisionLab, following the correct steps, and see where that gets you. Also, give installing the presets in a different fashion a try, such as dragging the preset directly into the preset folder found in your "FXhome EffectsLab Pro
" folder (located in your "program files" folder or the equivalent of the program files folder for a Mac).
That is about all I can suggest at the moment. It is rather late, and I do not have the time to look into this much more for the time being. With any luck, one of those suggestions will work, or the FXhome team
will figure something out. I will be checking back in later.
Best of luck.

I'm having the same problem sort of. I'm running Effects lab DV on a PC, have downloaded the preset packs (for DV only) and unzipped them (there is no preset folder in my installation of the program, which I'm pretty sure is the full one). I go to import preset packs and go to the folder but when I get there the folder is empty. Now if I go to the folder outside of the program all the preset packs are there and labeled as such, but for some reason the program isn't recognizing they exist. Any ideas?

You don't need to unzip them. When you download a preset pack it should have the extension ".FXpreset_pack". Sometimes Internet Explorer (and maybe other browsers?) will try and be smart and detect the file format and change the extension. So in your case I'm guessing that it added a ".zip" extension to the downloaded file.
Just remove the ".zip" from the filename.
and then import that file from within ELab.

open EL DV
locate file, press enter
a green loading bar flashes up but the preset is nowhere to be found.

This is working just fine.
As long as the file you download is a .FXpreset_pack and not a .zip (or an unzipped .zip) then you'll be fine.
Its sometimes hard to find where the presets are installed if you don't know where to look.
They are either in the effects preset browser (the presets shown here depend on which effect engine you have selected in the effect browser) or in the grading preset widget - the manual explains how to bring this up.

Specifically, I have downloaded the preset "Blue Energy Ball", which is a .FXpreset_pack. I believe this is a particle effect preset and not a grading preset. After I import this preset and then select the particle engine in the browser the "Blue Energy Ball" effect does not appear.
I have also looked in the appropriate preset file folder on my computer and the effect does not appear there either. The .png and .tga files also do not appear in their respective folders.
I believe there are others who were having this same problem previously and I would be interested to know if they still are. In any case it is not currently working on my system....any other thoughts?

fanfare96 -- you can't download them at all, or you can't install them once they are downloaded? If the problem is in the installation, make sure your pc is not trying to unzip the files. They should download with the extension .FXpreset_pack attached to them. Your computer might detect that they are zipped files, and try to unzip them. Dont let it. You need to import them exactly as they are when you download them.
Jimgee- sorry to hear that. We will keep working on figuring this one out.

In order to help out can someone tell me the exact file folder(s) and/or file names that are downloaded when I choose to download the Preset named "Blue Energy Ball".
Currently I am getting a folder named "Blue_Energy_ball" with the following files:
media\preview\Blue Energy Ball.tga_1.tga
preset\Blue Energy Ball.FXpreset
Is this correct?

Make sure that you are not opening the file; instead, you need to save it to your hard disk. Once saved to your hard disk (with "FXpreset_pack" extension), import it from within EffectsLab.

This means that you have (or your browser has) unzipped the ".FXpreset_pack" file. EffectsLab needs the original ".FXpreset_pack" without being unzipped.
Your browser may be attaching a ".zip" extension to the "FXpreset_pack" file. If so, remove the ".zip" from the filename and then import the "FXpreset_pack" file from within EffectsLab.

You were right, my browser was automatically unzipping the file. So, I downloaded the file without the auto unzip and it was saved as:
I then changed the name by removing the .zip suffix. I opened VisionLab and attempted to import the preset named "Blue_Energy_Ball.FXpreset_pack". This also did not work...it still does not appear in the preset browser nor is it in the preset file folder itself.
any other suggestions?

I am using Safari. In Safari's preferences there is an option to automatically open "safe" files after downloading. I have tried downloading the files with this option on and off. Even though the file gets downloaded differently (Unzipped vs. zipped as I stated above) I still cannot import the preset.

I'm on a PC. I can download the presets just fine, and I can see most of them in Effects Lab Pro, but when I re-open the Presets folder, the one located in my Programs files, the folder appears to be empty. Upon checking the Properties of the Presets folder it says, 0 items, yet the presets are working, most of them, in Effects Lab Pro. Is this normal? Maybe I'll just try a reinstall of Effects Lab Pro, but I'd need to re-download all of the many presets I've already downloaded, unless someone tells me something I don't know.

There are no known problems here IF your browser downloads the file correctly and you really do look in the correct places in the program.
For each preset you download you should get 1 single file - this file should have the suffix .FXpreset_pack (not .zip, not .FXpreset and not a folder or any other files).
If the file does have the suffix .zip then simply try replacing this with .FXpreset_pack BEFORE you import it in to the program.
If you have tried to install the wrong file types before then you may have caused damage to either the application preferences or preset database in which case you should delete them. Instructions to do this are here -> http://fxhome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21562
In the case of the preset packs being downloaded correctly we can't find any faults with the program.
Make sure you know how to bring up the grading filters widget and look under all the effects. The program will normally tell you if its having trouble importing a preset, if it doesn't then it should be there somewhere.

Although I had tried everything that had been suggested to me previously I thought I would start from scratch and do it all over again.
I erased EVERYTHING related to FxHome from my computer including:
The "FxHome VisionLab HD" application from the "Application" folder
The "FxHome" folder in the "Documents" folder
The "VisionLab HD" folder in the "Preferences" folder (in the Library folder in my home folder)
I re-downloaded VisionLab HD (.937) from the FxHome site and re-installed it.
I then downloaded the "Blue Energy Ball" (particle) preset from the FxHome site. This was downloaded to a folder that I set up named "Safari Downloads" in my "Documents" folder. The file downloaded as "Blue_Energy_Ball.FXpreset_pack.zip". I then removed the .zip suffix from the file name so that I then had a file named "Blue_Energy_Ball.FXpreset_pack".
I ran VisionLab and opened a "Blank Timeline" with a "NTSC/DV (720x480) template and changed the Scan Method to "Progressive".
I then chose the "Import FXpreset pack" option from the drop down menu in the effects browser. This opens a "Finder" window where I navigated to the "Safari Downloads" folder and chose the file "Blue_Energy_Ball.FXpreset_pack" and clicked "Open".
There is something that flashes on the screen but it is too quick for me to know what it is and/or what it says.
If I then go to the effects browser and select the "Particles" engine the only thing listed are the "Dust Storm" and Heat Haze" presets that were installed with the program. There is no "Blue Energy Ball" particle preset shown/listed.
If I go to Documents>FXhome>VisionLab HD and then open the "preset" folder there is nothing listed with the name "Blue Energy Ball" there either. There are also no associated .TGA or .PNG files in the "preview" and "texture" folders (which I believe there should be).
If I do a "Spotlight" search of my entire computer there is no reference to "Blue Energy Ball" anywhere except the original preset download.
I hope this is enough detail for you to figure out what I am doing wrong or if there is another problem.
Thanks again for all your help.

Had a play with the latest Safari update and it seems to have taken a turn for the worse.
Like IE on the PC it tries to detect the file type by looking at the file itself rather than by what the web server says the file is. This is what is making it add ".zip" to the end of the file name.
To make matters worse, on trying the change the name of the file by removing the ".zip" Mac OS X takes it upon itself to unzip the file and places it in the folder with the ".FXpreset_pack" suffix on the name of the folder - this is NOT a file but an unzipped folder and therefore won't work in the program correctly.
This can be stopped but I can't remember how off the top of my head - its most annoying! Any uber Mac OS X people out there willing to help me out?
In the next version of the program we will be adding ".FXpreset_pack.zip" to the file types the program allows, but for now I suggest using FireFox which downloads the preset packs correctly on the Mac as it does on the PC.Updatehttp://www.skytag.com/filebuddy/
I've got File Buddy installed when I right-click a file in my contextual menu I have a sub-menu "File Buddy" and under that a function "Rename". Here i was able to remove the ".zip" file extension of the file without unzipping it and it works fine in VisionLab. FireFox is the easier method until be update the programs to 1.0.938 but this is another option.

This is not the problem.
I originally had the option in Safari set in preferences wher it would automatically unzip the file and I got a folder.
I have since changed the Safari preference to NOT automatically unzip the file. As I stated above it does now download as only one single FILE with the .zip suffix (not a folder). I am then manually renaming the FILE without the .zip. It still does not import.

When you manually rename the ".zip" in the Finder Mac OS X thinks you want to unzip it as well, or it does here. I'm left with a folder I can open and navigate called "<presetname>.FXpreset_pack". This still won't work as its actually being unzipped when its renamed.
If I rename with File Buddy or download with Fire Fox its totally fine all of the time.

When I rename the file manually it DOES NOT unzip it. If I were to double-click the file it will unzip it and then I have the same folder that you are speaking of but I am not doing that.
The question remains why I cannot get this renamed FILE to import.

I downloaded Firefox and the file downloaded and imported into VisionLab with no problem.
Apparently Safari is in-fact doing something to the file when/after it is downloaded. Obviously there will be other users of Safari and this problem will continue to present itself in the future. Is this something that FxHome will be able to address or will I always have to use Firefox?
I appreciate the time you took to help resolve this. Keep up the great work.

I was using a full install of the standard version.
Looking back at the replies here of the people who say its working, they are nearly all using the pro version.

I myself have had a few issues with presets now, as well as a couple other members who have contacted me. After a while of trying to rationalize (checking the suffix, making sure the files have not been unzipped, and even considering conflict issues with older presets, and the new releases), I simply decided to re-install the program, which worked.
I have since then instructed another member who has contacted me, to do the same, and the results were the same. I am not certain why it would work, but it does none the less, and I recommend to all other members who are experiencing this preset difficulty to try this in their attempts to correct the issue.
madmardy wrote:conclusion: there is a bug in the standard version on some machines at least in version 935 will try 937 next.

There is actually a quite useful and hard working beta testing team which is doing a fine job as it is. Unfortunately, not every issue can be resolved, predicted, or discovered by this team. This is why a community such as this is so necessary, and appreciated, as we all just want to see these programs meet their expectations. I would like to extend my thanks to them; they are doing a great job so far.
It was/is recommended that every member upgrade to the newest version, which means you should have already done so. If you have not, please do so. In the future I suggest updating as soon as the new version is released
, so that the risk of complications is lowered.
Have a great day.

I'm having a mix of those problems( Using a PC). When I import a preset pack either the pack isn't there,(even though I checked that it was in the folder) but sometimes it will be there, it will load, but the preset is in none of the categorizes (Muzzle Flash, Optics, etc.) or in the Grading preset effects.
Also, when the presets do show up, when I click on them a director player error comes up saying "String expected <void>", I click OK and another one says "List expected for handler #count"

The preset folder located in your program file folder should be empty, yes. This is because once put into the folder (fully loaded into the program) they carry over to your documents folder. So to answer that question; yes, your documents folder should contain all of your preset files. It should in fact contain files that read "FX preset
", instead of "FX pack
ragnar wrote:Both folders are empty.
So, are you saying that none, not even the presets that come with the download are present in your documents? Just to clarify, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the only
folder that should show any presets, once they are loaded, is your documents folder.
If all of the presets you download are available in the program, but none show up in your documents folder, it may be because the files are hidden to you. I do not know how this would be, but it may have happened, some how, in which case you would have to change this through your folder options, which I can tell you how to do, if you need. If you are saying that the presets are not even visible in the program after download, and installation, then I am sorry for the confusion, and I will try to help you with that issue.
I await a response.

If its the presets, it suggests that perhaps your preset database file is corrupt somehow, did you delete the EffectsLab folder within "My Documents\FXhome"

When I try to import a preset, a warning box pops up that just says "????". I tried to trash the FXhome folder from my documents, and it says the folders are empty in the trash, but neither "EffectsLab" or "EffectsLabDV" will trash because it says "The operation could not be completed because the files "charger.err" and "deadoralive.err" could not be deleted". Weird.

I have read the numerous posts on this subject and I want to be clear to see if I am reading this all correctly.
First, I get the whole changing-the-extension-so-the-program-will-recognize-it part. But I think it was confusing (at least to me) as to what file is needed.
For instance (here are a few statements I think can surmise what I understand):
1. The VisionLab program cannot open a .zip file.
2. It recognizes the extension .FXpreset_pack which should be attached to the preset file within the .zip file or folder within the .zip file.
3. After opening up the .zip file, retrieving and renaming the preset file, you put in within my document folder.
4. The ADDITIONAL files in SOME preset downloads (i.e. .png files) are for viewing the sample of that download applied (but not necessary for the preset to work or be loaded).
So this is what I understand to be true. Am I wrong?

Garrison32 - it seems you may have picked up some bad info along your travels!
(Firstly, you should make sure you are running the latest version.)
When you download a preset from the web site, the saved preset filename on your hard disk should be:[preset name].FXpreset_pack
However, this file type is actually a ZIP file and some browsers try to be a little clever and either automatically unzip it, or add the ".zip" extension to the file.
You do not want to, or need to, unzip the file. Likewise, you do not need to add any extensions to the file.
There is only one way to import presets, and that is to use the method from within the program (e.g. 'File' menu then 'Import'). You don't need to copy files/images into the folder under "My Documents" (or the equivalent Mac location).
The program will let you import the following files:[preset name].FXpreset_pack
If you cannot find either of those filenames in the folder where you saved the preset to, then you should re-download it from the web site.
* Older versions of the programs did not allow importing of ".FXpreset_pack.zip" but the latest versions do.

So the program CAN open .zip files and takes it from there. Whew!
That clears up my mis-lead info heheh.
But I know that I have downloaded a couple of presets that were not in a .zip file and was the preset file all by itself. What should I do with those presets?
Oh and to add another hurdle into the mix: After I import the preset sucessfully into the program, can I rename them to make it easier for me? I like to name the similar presets close together. Like the muzzle flashes change them for my use to like M.Gun Flash1, M.Gun Flash2 etc. Can this be done?
Thanks for being patient with me.

I don't know where you got them from, but all presets from the FXhome web site are ".FXpreset_pack" files. So if you don't have an ".FXpreset_pack" file (or ".FXpreset_pack.zip") then you can't import it. If your browser automatically unzipped the file then that may explain why you see some ".FXpreset" files (note the difference between ".FXpreset
" and ".FXpreset_pack
Garrison32 wrote:After I import the preset sucessfully into the program, can I rename them to make it easier for me?
Yes, just right-click on the preset, choose to edit it, and then in the popup window you can change its name (along with a bunch of other fields too).

Count me in as another that can't import presets. The files are downloaded properly and i'm using the latest version of EffectsLab DV (1.000.935). I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling, removing the dirs in program files and My Documents and reinstalling again etc.
I'm trying to load Bourne Identity Basic and Calm Sunset.
I've tried on two different WinXP boxes, both fully patched.
All I get are the 22 default presets. I also ran the Preset Manager applet and it also shows that the downloaded presets are not installing. It also shows that there are no problems with any of the standard presets.
This is pretty darn frustrating. Hope you guys figure it out.

That's not the latest version. Maybe downloading the latest version from here
can solve your problem. (939)
Hope that works!

Yep, 939 IS in my "software" folder, but auto arrange had it at the bottom, so I thought 935 was the latest in the alphabetical list. Anyway, that fixed it.

TimmyD wrote:Yeah, same thing happened to me. I thought they didnt load up, but actually, when you click on an effect in the toolbox, let's say Optics, all the presets for the Optics effects will appear.
On the timeline, in the lower left corner if you right click a clip, and select "Apply Preset" you will find all the grading plugins and such.
Thanks a lot for that Timmy, never would have known.
