Top news today! The Nintendo DS is redisigned!

Nintendo Japan announced details of the remodeled DS today.

The DS Lite is a slimmer DS with a brighter screen that will hit in Japan on March 2. The device will be less than two-thirds the size of the original DS and about 20 percent lighter, according to Satoru Iwata. It will also sport four levels of brightness, thus the name. (That and it’s lighter)

The thing will weigh in at 218 grams, or about 60 less than the current one, its dimensions will be 133mm x 73.9mm x 21.5mm and it will cost about 16,800 yen, or about $145. Nintendo says details of the U.S. and U.K. release dates will be coming down the line.

If that's real, it's brilliant. At least now it holds a chance against the PSP's looks.

I like the look of the DS as it is with the silver colour. Although my enthusiasm for handheld consoles isn't as high as it used to be, the look of both makes little difference, its whats underneath thats important, right?

Its sweet, but the design does look a little flawed. Like how, although small is nice, I don't think the DS should be much smaller. If I didn't already have a DS, I might have sprung for this new model.

Looks like a long GBA SP. But yeah, 2/3rds smaller! Wheres the 2/3rds bigger version for my monster hands?

I really can't see any difference at all versus the old design...

Is it really 2/3rds smaller? Isn't that a bit too...small?

No, its one third smaller, I think. If you can trade yours in for a new one, I will probably do that.

I hate you er-no! I challenged you a while ago. I love the re-design.

For those saying it's the same...

Can you see the difference, it's pretty blatant.

Nintendo made the new one shiny, and revolution style with the Revolution D-Pad and buttons, it is also white, with a brighter screen, moved the start, select, and microphone, made birghtness adjustable, and it is thinner and smaller.

Revolution controller, they made it this style so consumers could associate the two systems.

The firmware will be updated as well, I imagine you wont have to shut the DS off for every little change (only thing I hate really.) It will have a HD that you can download up to 10 demos from from the NWFC.

This is a good thing. While still don't think the DS can hold a candle next to the PSP, the shrinker of the big ol' clunker is much more appealing.

It'll launch probably with Metroid Hunters.

Which is the most stupidly good handheld game ever made.
Holy mother of pearl, the online multiplayer options in that game are simply brilliant.

...of course... I haven't played it... cool

The original DS is the nastiest, most unergonomic handheld I've ever used, so I'll be checking this out.

I prefer this mock-up idea though:

Not really... I never got an SP and I was fine with my regular GBA all the way till the DS came out. They're not going to stop supporting the regular DS all of a sudden.

PS - I really like that mock up, Alex Reeve.

I'm glad someone said this, I didn't want to be the only one. This marketing ploy of releasing the same handheld over and over, only smaller and a different colour is the only thing I hate about Nintendo.

Otherwise, they're great! razz

Why doens't Nintendo get it right the first time? They always "redesign" their portable devices.

Gameboy Advanced.
Gameboy Advanced SP.
Gameboy Advanced **With brighter screen!

Somewhere the gamboy mini came in.

Then the DS.
Now the new DS.

It seems like they just can't get it right the first time...just my opinion.

Remember the original Game Boy System? Then the Game Boy pocket? Gameboy Color? Gameboy Colors that comes in different colors besides that sickly translucent purple?

There's a thread for this at brickfilms.... although it's mutating into a DS vs PSP thread. Where's the power button!?

Oh and there might be a SMALL chance that nintendo might be planing a sneak launch for the revolution. Maybe the same day as the DS lite? oooh! maybe they'll package them together! That would be cool. I hope the DS logo on the top doesn't stick out o much. And it doesnt say nintendo anywhere!

They "bothered" because they will get more people without a DS interested, make it more practical, and sell it to Nintendo geeks like me. I also think they are adding a demo download service and updating the firmware. This is more updating the DS to make the NWFC more useable on the DS methinks, I am thinking online pictochat. We'll just have to wait and see.

PS- Power button is on one of the sides of the system and is more like a GBA on switch. I like this because I accidently hit the power button every now and again.

Change 'Small chance' to 'absolute zero' chance.
The console has still yet to be unveiled, heading for a E3 showcase in May. Release at the moment to be confirmed in October/November for US and Europe.

Really? My next large purchase will be CLab Pro (and maybe the upgrade to ELab Pro as well). I have the original DS and am not about to go and pay a hundred more dollars to get a smaller version. I don't really mind the larger size anyways, so I don't really see the benefit nor neccesity and having a smaller version. But if that helps sway the public then I'm glad for Nintendo for doing it. As long as the PSP doesn't dominate the market (my worst nightmare) I don't think I'm going to complain.

Yeah Nintendo can't do anything quietly, not for a next gen release. I'm interested to see what they do with the idea of playing the old games on it. Hopefully 3rd party games will be included.

As for the DS, is much nicer, but not a PSP razz

Ok, now I say DS passes PSP in every aspect when this http://www.nintendorevolution.ca/02132006/21/nintendo_ds_gets_a_hard_drive and the lite are released. HOLY CRAP that looks awesome. For me the PSP was more of a sleek gadget, now the DS has the gadget part if you want (some people don;t want to pay $250 with that feature, they just want games.) I wont get that because of my iPod, but if you like DS games better than PSP, there is no reason to buy a PSP IMO. The only downside is price, but if you don't mind forking over some dough and prefer the DS, I would go this way.

For 250$, if you add that to the 150$ (I think) price, it makes 400$..... more than the PSP...? Nonetheless, it's still very cool if you already have a DS.

Right, like you said, it would be best for already DS owners looking for media device. It would make it one package. Also, it will work on DS Lite, but DS Lite's GB slot makes games stick out a little, so it will make it about as tall as a normal DS, but that wide-ways it already fits in my pocket, it's the thickness that gets annoying.

Also, this device is to iPod in a conversation I had vs. the PSP because it has a hard drive. PSP costs oodles of money to get even a gig. This is 4 GB and it has a playlist system etc., the PSP's media browser is more "Folder" style.

Bump as this gets juicier. A press conference is being held to list the next line of upcoming games, possibly a web browser powered by Opera, and a TV tuner is pretty much confirmed. Tomorrow everything will be more official. This is getting crazy.

No idea what that is.

It still plays GbA games!!

Looks like the two "unknown" colors are blue and black!
