Hi!
I've made a list of free softwares you can use. You don't need a big pocketbook to take advantage of your editing-skills! Just use the free softwares, and let the movies start rolling! wink

Free editing softwares

Free 3D softwares

Free audio softwares

Free effects softwares
Here I'd strongly recommend the FXhome products. They are not free, but still very cheap! Definitly worth the money! wink

Free Photo software

Free Script and Storyboard Softwares

Free Media Players

Free anti-virus and Firewall softwares

Other free softwares

Thanks alot to everyone who've come up with links to software, and a big thank you to the FXhome team! And if you're missing something, just say and I'll extend the list! wink

Feel free to post some links to free software unless its a competitor to our range in which case it'll be deleted (please don't even post it in the first place). We have to make a living from this after all.

It's very disappointing that you have deleted links to jahshaka and other things because you see them as "competition" for you.
The whole point of getting FXLab is to be able to benefit from the presets and downloadable effects that are provided here as well as the forum, something that jahshaka CANNOT provide.

I have to say that I originally purchased AlamDV to support your endeavors and to participate in an online DIY community, but frankly, ALam promised "a lifetime of free upgrades" and so far I've had to pay for every single one of them (two by now I guess)- yet I continued to support the endeavor with my money and my time because I enjoy the enthusiasm of the forum and the (sometimes) free exchange of info. on the forum. I've been a good citizen and paid my money (albeit at the lower end of the spectrum) and I continue to post based on my own experiences working in video and film production (what I do for a living) and what I learn from others. But the continued corporatization of the product line (away from the DIY ethic that started it) leaves me asking "Why invest in these products, when things like particle illusion or after effects or other products do everything much better?" I've started to look at it as a "real" product as well, and don't get me wrong, I LIKE it, but Most NLE's composite quite well, perhaps not with the exact feature set of Composite Lab, but honestly, if you intend to start treating your product line as a set of "professional" products, then they should be compared with other professional products- and an open source, free app (like jahshaka) shouldn't appear to be a "threat" IMO, when other commercial packages like AE are obviously your supposed competition.
Rant over-
I'm sure this post will be deleted, I will be banned, something of that nature- so much for my lifetime of upgrades, free, paid, or otherwise.

Yes, this is what I use for my screenplay writing. A very useful program indeed.

Another thing you left off your list: Icarus - a piece of motion tracking software free for non-commercial use

Windows
Mac

Icarus Video Tutorial

The company that did make Icarus has been bought by The pixel farm which sells an updated version of Icarus under a different name. Nevertheless, Icarus remains a very capable program.

Firstly, there was never going to be a lifetime of free upgrades for AlamDV1 - this was never stated and would have made the most terrible business plan ever. FXhome nearly died in 2004 as it was, without upgrades we would be dead.

Secondly, if you purchased AlamDV2 (before we did the free upgrade) you would have only ever paid for 1 upgrade to the newest software line at a really low price.

Thirdly, the free exchange of information has always been welcome on FXhome usless its discussing a competitors software with a view to us maybe losing sales. Sure talk about all manner of things but don't bite the hand that feeds when it comes to our only source of income!

But the continued corporatization of the product line (away from the DIY ethic that started it) leaves me asking "Why invest in these products, when things like particle illusion or after effects or other products do everything much better?"
This couldn't be further from the truth and I find this very upsetting. We are a small company trying to survive. Last year we only broke even for 2 months of the entire year. In the year to 2004-2005 my salary as the Managing Director of FXhome.com was only just over £6,500 (thats a full time job of over 80 hours every week) - I think thats probably somewhere around $10,500. All the other guys also work for a wage far lower than they might get elsewhere just because they enjoy being part of what we have created.

Our DV and Pro products are really cheap for consumers. In order to survive we have more expensive software as well but we haven't cut off our roots - we've extended them in bringing not only visual effects but professional compositing to low-budget film makers.

Four years ago AlamDV1 was £45, now EffectsLab DV is £65 - if you include inflation and the amount of additional research, development and features then £20 more is nothing. If you then include how much bigger FXhome is now, the needs for more support and staff and expensive servers you can see why its a fine balance.

To then say our products don't match up with vastly more expensive products is even more insulting when in many cases they surpass the products you mention in the areas where their is crossover.

So with all this in mind, asking us to include links and discussion about our competitions software on our website just doesn't add up. No company would do this, and its even more damaging when your talking about free software against a product that actually does cost money.

I'm sure this post will be deleted, I will be banned, something of that nature- so much for my lifetime of upgrades, free, paid, or otherwise.
To be honest I did consider deleting it just because its an incorrect and agressive post. We never offered free lifetime upgrades and you are the first person I can remember saying that we did. We've always offered cheap new version upgrades and free point release upgrades (and in the case of many people who purchased AlamDV2 a free upgrade to EffectsLab DV).

For the record, I don't think a single person has ever been banned from FXhome and the only software we invalidate is down to leaked serial codes/key or licence agreement issues. We did have a troll who posted 2 word replies to every new thread made for about 2 days - we simply deleted these and he didn't come back.

Now schwar has had his reply, and bryan has his rant, further posts on this tangential topic will be deleted.

That includes replies to schwar's post. Lets keep this thread on target. Thanks.

Further issues with FXHome's policies can be taken up in the IRC chat channel with the staff in person. Do not pollute nice topics with bitching.

I notice a lot of this software is platform specific.

Might it be worth adding a or & type thing at the end?

I have a sugestion for a media player... or well, a codec pack that includes two different media players wich you can chose between.
CCCP : The Combined Community Codec Pack

It can play absolutly everything. Like VLC, only better. I really recommend it!

FRAPS: http://www.fraps.com/
It is screen capture software for taking screenshots, or video capture, and also benchmarking. I use it to record video clips of game sequences. Limitations of the freeware download are the length of time it records and I think a watermark. (For Windows)

Just to clarify, DgeeMe is a video based Motion Capture program used to aid character animation in 3d modeling/animating programs.

Icarus is a Matchmoving program, used for tracking cg elements into live action footage.

I haven't gotten round to using Dgeeme but Icarus is the best free camera tracker out there compared to others (Voodoo being the other I know of).

First off, I just realized a very good program, Skype is not on the list. Definately something that needs to be added.

Secondly, though I know IM programs are a bit far off from the filmaking subject, Trillian is the ultimate instant messanging program. It can connect to any IM program you have an account for, including the chatrooms on sites like fxhome. The pro version costs a few dollars, but the basic version is free and works great!

Finally, I would like to highly recommend that this topic be made a sticky. It's quite useful and it would be a shame for it to fell downward a page or so and be forgotten. Quite a sticky-worthy topic.

If you add Trillian, add the Mac alternative>> Adium. Skype is great if you are on an international team of filmmakers (maybe a voice actor is in Sweden or something while you are in Brazil, whatever). Things like that, in my opinion, fly.

As for the stickies, I am sick of stickies on this page. The UFAQ should be the only sticky and it uses the other resources (Ultmate Airsoft, Sound, Music) in the post with a "thanks" type thing that Arktic did last time. In Hajiku's he linked to important threads and titled them as something like "Ultimate Music FAQ." Stickies make everything crowded at the top.

Add Rasterbator http://arje.net/rasterbator
and the Mac alternative to rasterbator - http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/20738

It makes one large image into a MASSIVE image that is divided up into printable sheets that can later be attached to make one massive poster.

I've got a good bunch to add to this...

Free ZoneAlarm
- I'd say this is the best free firewall ever. It permits you to have some really good, user-customizeable security at no cost. [b]A word to the wise, it does not allow for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), so when utilizing ICS, disable ZoneAlarm and employ the Windows Firewall on the computer receiving internet through ICS.

avast! Free AntiVirus
- I use AVG as it's much better than any other free antivirus (schedulable scans and updates, no registration naggery, effective), but I feel like I should mention it for those people who like choosing software that sucks. biggrin

Lavalys Everest Home 2.20
- This is the last version of the now-discontinued Everest Home PC information package. If you ever need to know the serial number on the third module on the RAM stick in DIMM 4, this is the application that will do it. In English, that means it'll tell you a LOT about your computer. It has some helpful memory benchmarks.

SiSoftware Sandra Lite
- Really, this is a less user-friendly version of Everest Home with a benchmarking suite that satisfies anyone with any Netburst-based Intel processor (Pentium 4 and beyond), but really no one else. Once again, in the interests of objectivity and open-mindedness, I'll mention this.

CPU-Z
- A very light system information program. It offers real-time in-depth information on your system's core logic (CPU, chipset, memory).

HDD Thermometer
- Works with most modern hard drives employing SMART technology. It'll tell you the temperature of your hard drive or hard drives.

DeepBurner Free
- A very useful CD/DVD burner, available freely.[img]

DefilerPak
- The most essential codecs, sans XviD.

XviD
- To finish up the DefilerPak. And watch my movie. biggrin

I had seen "Sketch Up' awhile back, but it was NOT free!
It's nice that Google has invested in the company and made a free version!

Fantastic list, however, I'd like to chip in a bit. First off, some more neat, useful, and spyware-free software that I've come across since I last posted. Free software freakin' rules.

Windows Desktop Search
- This is a "real-time" search engine for the files on your computer. When you install it, it creates an index of all the files on your computer, and their location. While it takes a bit of time (leave your computer on for a night) and performance (Pentium III at 850 MHz with 256 MB RAM does it just fine) to create an index on your computer (when it's idle), the results are well worth it. For those who aren't meticulous about keeping their files and folders in perfect order, this is a handy tool. It is also highly extendable, with addons available for many common applications. It is not necessary to install the MSN Search Toolbar for Internet Explorer with Windows Desktop Search, a standalone installer is available if you scroll down the page a bit.

Google Desktop Search 4
- Google Desktop Search is, frankly, the exact same thing as Windows Desktop Search with a few more added features. I find these features to be frivolous, clunky, and obnoxious, but others may not. It doesn't take up many more resources than Windows Desktop Search, and is equally effective.

FlyAKite OS X
- Make your Windows XP PC look like a Mac.

FileZilla
- This is a full-featured, free FTP client. It's very similar to SmartFTP, except it's free.

Nvu
- This is an open source, free WYSIWYG web editor which is very similar to Microsoft Frontpage. It's fantastic.

Microsoft Powertoys for Windows XP
- These are FANTASTIC addons to Microsoft Windows XP. Notable ones in the list are SyncToy (Application which helps synchronize files/folders between multiple computers), TweakUI (Tweak, fiddle with, and perfect your version of Windows), PowerCalc (Graphing calculator), Alt+Tab Replacement (Gives Alt+Tab live picture previews) and the Color Control Panel Applet (Professional display-print color calibrator and palette viewer).

Citrus Alarm Clock
- Finally, I dunno about you guys, but MAN it's nice to have an alarm clock built right into my computer. It's taken awhile to find one that's fast, easy-to-use, and highly customizeable, but this one's it. Wake up to something in your music collection, or to your Windows startup sound. Who cares?

Alrighty, next on the board is a bone to pick with the list as it currently stands. As an ardent PC user who verily knows craptastic software from a long distance away, what are RealPlayer and MusicMatch Jukebox doing on the list of software? Really, those two are pretty bad...

Oeyvind: I have a few programs you could put on your list:

tickHandbrake - A DVD ripping program

tick Handbrake Lite - Easier to use than handbrake

tickTerranim - Animate your Terragen renders

Hope this helps out.

+1 !!!!

If I had any requests to make regarding this excellent list, it would be to possibly put in a short bit of text after each entry in the "Other Softwares" category saying what they are and what they do. (Just very general, high level tidbit.) A couple of them I clicked on had names that weren't very intuitive so I wasn't sure what I was getting when I clicked through.

This is definitely stickyable material. smile (Is that even a word?)

Nice list Oeyvind, +1!

Autostitch for stitching panoramas and other photographs together. Though it is best to put the camera in manual mode for the same exposure, (or AE Lock) it puts them all together, then adjusts the brightness for you. Very handy, especially good for some matte painting and poster making workflows.

Mac alternative (there always is one smile):

http://hugin.sourceforge.net/

NOTE FOR ALL PHOTOSHOPPERS:
These softwares surpass Photoshop's stitched by a long shot. Also, if you own a Canon Camera, it comes with great stitching software.

I don't know anything about writing scripts and only basics on storyboarding. So which one of those programs do you suggest I use? I downloaded Celtx and it looks very indepth, but not so much that I couldn't figure it out. Thanks for any input in advance.

And thank you for doing so.

Links in nicely with something I'm working on for my company at the moment, but I think I'll bang up a new thread in a few days time to garner maximum coverage. But still all of those links are invaluable to me right now!

This is a great list! It should be made into a sticky. It helped me a lot, I have no doubt it won't help other people too.

Good work with the list!
