Dunno what to call my primary computer, as it is a Dell (Dimension 8300), but I've lovingly upgraded it myself, so it's considerably custom-built as well. I'm really happy with it.

Of course, I do have my Mac, which has a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4... biggrin

When Apple announced that they were switching to Intel chips, developers had the option to buy specialized Macs that ran 3.6 GHz Pentium 4's. I merely constructed my own "Mac" and installed Mac OS X on it... because I'm a geek and I like to screw around with computers. It has a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4, though when you click "About This Mac..." it thinks it's a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4. Lolz.

Yes I did. It's really stable as my first homebrew machine.

I'm counting on upgrading the memory soon.

I'm replacing my memory on my Dell soon. I bought 2 GB of Corsair ValueSelect. Unfortunately, one of my sticks died a few months after arriving, so I RMA'd it to Corsair. They sent me a replacement stick and I promptly stuck it in.

Anyways, I recently cracked my case to clean all the dust out and put Arctic Silver 5 thermal grease on all the warmer components (GPU, VRAM, CPU). Anyways, in cleaning the interior, I noticed that the components on my DIMMs (the actual memory modules) differed from eachother, meaning I had mismatched RAM. I was really disappointed that my RAM died so early, but Corsair's been amazing in terms of RMA-ing my memory. I think I'm gonna go with Crucial next time, though.

<-- My RAM.

And now I've got a frontside LCD that tells me the temperatures of my CPU, GPU, and my RAM... and I've got a nice PCI-slot fan to remove the hot air from my GPU. I think I might get an aftermarket video card cooler later on... but for now, this works. I sure do <3 computers.

Custom, of course!

I really need a CPU upgrade though, this puny 1.9GHz thing is killing me. And I've started to run across a few programs that requrie SSE2 (like Premiere Pro 2), which I don't have since it's an Athlon XP sad

Pentium... is gone forever, I think. And that really saddens me, I think a Pentium V would've been a fine note to end that note on, especially considering that many people consider the Pentium 4 to have been a failure overall.

Conroe is currently the codename for a badass dual-core chip that's supposed to go in consumer desktops. Merom is the mobile variant, and Woodcrest is the server (Xeon) variant. Conroe and Merom will be named alongside the "Core" series. For example, a 2.66 GHz Conroe will be the Intel Core E6700.

Viiv is merely Intel's (useless) multimedia platform. I don't like the method that's being carried out... it's not consolidated. Something on that wide a scale needs much tighter industry standards... and frankly, the "requirements" for a Viiv enabled PC are just stupid (Dual-core processor, Windows Media Center Edition-esque OS).

Viiv is dull and boring. Conroe freaking rules.

Well... heh... this may get flamed, but now is a really bad time to choose to do that. Intel will be taking back the performance lead this summer, the initial benchmark numbers for Conroe are outstanding. Intel's are also historically more stable than AMD's because Intel designs and manufactures their own core logic.

I'd suggest you have a look at CPU reviews before announcing such a decision.

Actually no. Intel joined Apple recently and the new chip isn't a Pentium is it? Whatever Pickle did is something I never knew was possible. So it isn't that outright that I wasn't aware of it. Unless they do call the new chip a Pentium still, but I thought it was something like Core-Duo. As for the smiley face, I guess I was happy that day. unsure

i suppose that might be true, but Intel's processors are normally way more expensive, and since i'm more of a penny-pinching kind of guy, i'm going AMD.

Well that's just it.... a $319 Conroe wiped the floor with the $1,030-odd Athlon 64 FX-60.

Built mine 5 years ago & updated it now & then (hd, graphics, new case, new monitor). It only takes Rimm/rambus RAM (which isn't produced anymore) so I thought I was done for when I wanted to upgrade that. Was going to pay £70 on ebay to get some used, but then spotted 2 256mb sticks at microwarehouse.com. Reviews I saw of the site weren't great, but I ordered them & now I have doubled the memory on my pc for a grand total of £12.

Funny thing is, Far Cry always worked on my pc but I could only have it at 800x600, & when I bought Call of Duty 2 I was amazingly disappointed when the framerate was about 1fps. Tried CoD2 again since installing the new RAM & it works like a dream on maximum settings, as does Far Cry. Didn't realise it would make such a difference, I just thought maybe my (admittedly old ge force fx 5600) 256mb graphics card wasn't up to it. Moral, CoD2 is a memory muncher.
