UPDATE: More video tutorials are going up every week. Check the support forums for full listings!

Just over a month ago we asked the community what you thought would help to improve the 'FXhome experience', especially with new users and visitors in mind.

The loudest requests were for video tutorials, so we set to work and the first tute is now ready to be viewed. We're still working out some of the eccentricities of the format (the chapter tabs don't quite go to the right place yet, for example), so think of this as a 'work in progress'.

Click here to watch the first video tutorial - an introduction to the FXhome timeline!

Note: This tutorial is about 10MB, so give it a few minutes to load up. Hit the big 'Play' button if it doesn't automatically start. You will, of course, need Macromedia Flash.

Now is the time to give us some feedback on the tutorial, so that we can tailor the rest of the series to fit your demands. Let us know what you like and don't like, as well as topics you'd like to see covered in future tutorials.

The first set will cover the basics, also examining the toolbox, the canvas and other major interface features. Following that we'll move into more sophisticated tutorials that examine actual techniques and 'how-tos'.

We hope you like this first tutorial - the first of many still to come!

Yay! First reply!

Good job Tarn,

I already knew everything in the tutorial, but this is bound to help out a lot of people who are having trouble with the basics.

Looking foward to more,

Indeed, this first lot will be for beginners (though some of the veterans might pick up the occasional thing or two, you never know!), then the next set will go to more advanced levels. Glad you liked it!

WhoooooHooooo I'm one happy customer! This is some great stuff guys!

I can't say (after having watched this) that I have anything to change or improve. It was basic, easily understood, and with good audio so I could clearly hear.

Keep up the great work Tarn.

Nice tutorial Tarn, good job. I can see that you have not lost your knack for making video tutorials. Although this did not have the comedic aspect that previous tutorials have had, it was very professional, polished, thought out, and I imagine it is exactly what beginners will need.

The screen caption looked very clear and crisp, which can be hard to find in video tutorials, and the audio came through nicely as well. I think you set a good pace for this, and stuck to it consistently through out the entire video. Keeping these things in mind will make it much easier for me to accept that there were no masks or hats in this one.

Great job Tarn.

Very, very good, Tarn! This was a really good tutorial which I think covered all the basics in a very understandable way. I think this'll help people very much in understanding the apps, and I think the quality of the whole thing is great! biggrin Fantastic work mate! Although I kind of missed the comedic touch as the last tutes had, I understand these are more proffesional, if I can put it that way. Oh, and I like your accent! clap +1

This is great. While I felt I was able to get a grasp on the interface very easily, some people may not be the same way, and believe me, video tutorials are always better than reading text when it comes to learning new programs.

Can anyone with Mozilla get the Adobe link to work? Keeps giving an address does not exist error and my copy of Mozilla only has Flash Player v7 something so the tutorials won't play.

The Adobe link works fine with IE (and my version of IE is up to date anyway so the tutorial runs fine) but I would rather stick with FireFox.

That's weird. When I click on the link the page tells me I have Flash Player version 7.0.19.0 (and the tutorial will not run with that). So I go to the download center page and when I click on the Download Now button I get an Alert box which states "fpdownload.macromedia.com could not be found. Plese check the name and try again".

Do I have an old version of Mozilla? it says version 1.0

Sweet. Only two things bothered me:

1. The look of the video player is pretty awful IMO. Doesn't fit at all with the rest of the site, and has that "Photoshop Tutorial" look to it, and it also has a lot of jagged lines.

2. Personally, I felt the tutorial moved far too slow, but since you have customers that don't speak very fluent english, this could be a good thing. Still, I had to skip through it to be able to stand the slowness of it (maybe it's just me, or the fact that I already knew all of it).

Thanks Pooky you saved me from double posting.

Yes I had an old version of Mozilla (now have shiny new 1.5) but no it was not my fault. Adobe's link is messed up on the Download Now button for Mozilla.

By trial and error I found out that the link should be to

http://download.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

with no fp at the start. Have emailed Adobe (but as they still haven't replied to me from last night when I emailed to tell them their link was broken I don't intend to hold my breath!)

To reply to Pooky's post, I think that it feels slow when you already know the softwatre, but for newbies I think it should progress in a speed making newbies able to pick up and learn it. I thought the speed was just fine, I mean if you are to learn the basics then why rush through them? Just my opinion though. wink

I agree that to people who have no idea, or maybe just a little one, on how to work the program, this tutorial will fit their needs.

I can't think of specific topics I'd like to see in the future, but I think we can all agree that the masking tutorial damn well has to have Tarn in a mask.

Or at least do it subliminally.

Anyway, ( and feel free to ignore this, since it's only to improve on what you currently have, and not to fix something that it doesn't have) after rewatching it, I think the problem might nto be the speed, but the intonation in your voice. I dunno, I feel it could use more expression... sorta like the DS reviews from here http://www.cabel.name/ (in case you haven't seen them), where the guy has tons of expression and is really funny (but not very professional, which is why you might want to stay away from his type of humor).

Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the comments, guys. I'll be having all this in mind as I make the rest of the set.

Pooky wrote:

We're using Camtasia Studio to make these tutorials, which is a mostly groovy program. Unfortunately, as you say, the player it uses is fairly godawful.

I'm not sure there's much we can do about it at this point, although I've heard rumours that the next version of Camtasia will enable more customisation of the player. Fingers crossed!

2. Personally, I felt the tutorial moved far too slow, but since you have customers that don't speak very fluent english, this could be a good thing. Still, I had to skip through it to be able to stand the slowness of it (maybe it's just me, or the fact that I already knew all of it).
As others have said, I think that'll be mainly because you already know your stuff. Once we get to the more advanced tutorials you'll probably find it more interesting.

One of the comments we always got about the old AlamDV2 video tutes is that they were far too fast for beginners. Given the dense amount of info being provided in the timeline tutorial, it was important to take it easy.

after rewatching it, I think the problem might nto be the speed, but the intonation in your voice. I dunno, I feel it could use more expression...
I'll take a look at the narration, in that case, and see if I can jazz it up a bit without losing the professionalism/clarity. A conversational, friendly voice will make people pay more attention, thus learning stuff more easily, so it's a good idea.

Just a quick note to say that I've updated the tutorial slightly. It now has a loading screen and the tweening section has been altered, along with a few other minor cosmetic tweaks.

I'd love to check out the tutorial. Unfortunately I can't get past the 'Camtasia studio requires Flash Player' page. I have Flash Player installed already but I've now downloaded and installed several times just in case I had an older version but still can't view the tutorial and get past that page.

A lot of other tutorials I view are created with Camtasia Studio and play fine. Any idea's?

Currently they're not listed properly on the site, because a) there's only one tutorial so far smile and b) malone hasn't had time to set anything up yet.

Once the first set is done, they'll be linked up properly.
