Well...

I personally will probably refrain from purchasing any of the systems. I've got a fast PC, and come Conroe, Merom, and Woodcrest, along with the current breed of graphics cards, I should be able to play games just fine. Not that it matters, I have Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod, which settles it right there. biggrin

That said... I have to say I'm hoping for the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360 to kick the ever-loving hiccups out of the the PlayStation 3. I don't particularly like Sony due to their self-professed right to sue people for $140,000 per pirated song, or their self-professed right to install rootkits on our computers. Sony as a company fails to impress me -- about their only redeeming factor in my eyes is my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV350 (my camera is magical smile).

Won't get any of them. I hardly played my Playstation 2 when I had it, I play other people's consoles (Bomberman, wooo!) and I'm more of a PC gamer anyway.

Sony Music is a totally different company to the one that does electronics.

Well maybe pirating songs is a bad idea.

Anyway I have a feeling that all three consoles will eventually enter my house. My brothers already pooled their money and bought a 360 and I'm sure that future Christmas/Birthday lists will have Wii and PS3 on them. As for me I really don't have much time for gaming but if I were to buy a console it would probably be the PS3.

I probably won't get any of them... I have Xbox, and I've had a lot of fun with it, but the last couple of years I haven't really played much... at all! But if I in the future get a whole bunch of money, I'd probably buy Xbox 360', it's awsome!

I'm definently getting a Wii, but other than that, sticking to my current systems. There are tons of new DS games I'm looking at, several new PSP games I may get, and Super Paper Mario for GCN sparked my interest.

I agree. But suing a low middle class North American family for having 100 "illegitimate" songs for $140,000 per pirated song isn't justice. While I very much like my HandyCam, it's the last Sony product I will ever own (At least, for a very long time).

I'm not secretly hoping that the PS3 tanks - I'm very open about it. Sony is more than content telling consumers that $599 is "probably too cheap."

They're both owned by Sony Corporation.
...which, I might add, has done little (if anything at all) to prevent it's "independent" child companies from carrying out their "business." Needless to say, I'm less than comfortable with Sony's business ethics.

$599 IS cheap. Blueray dvd players alone cost $1000+ right now. Combine that with all the stuff the ps3 has inside and i can totally understand the price.

Prices drop, and there's no guarantee your first generation Blu-Ray player will be able to play the standard for times to come. It's one of the first comercial BD-ROM players to come out. Two or three years down the road, assuming Blu-Ray wins the format war, you may not be able to play certain Blu-Ray disks that may have more than ten layers, etc. etc.

Then there's the fallacy of buying a BD-ROM player right now. For one, it's necessary to have an HDTV in order to see any enhanced quality in BD-ROM video. BD-ROM disks are currently available for.... like.... five movies, and they're expensive at that. Blu-Ray disk players will drop in price, just as DVD players did, and eventually we'll all have optical drives that can, at least, play both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

And what of HD-DVD? Microsoft has announced an add-on for both the $299 and $399 Xbox 360 systems which will cost $100-$150. The Blu-Ray player on the PlayStation 3 is available only on the $599 version. Having Blu-Ray on the $499 version would be useless as the $499 version has no HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output.

Hey, buy whatever makes you happy, I'm just saying Sony's marketing is.... well... marketing.

It didn't say it was a good idea. I said by the time the ps3 comes out, (And lets be honest, the blu-ray will most likely win the Format war) The price of six hundred is going to still be pretty decent considering what you get for the price. Buying the $500 is worthless anyways, Exactly like the Core system 360.

The consistently delayed PlayStation 3 is scheduled to launch in November of 2007, giving the Xbox 360 a good one-year lead. It will sell for $499 (no HDMI, no Blu-Ray) and $599, respectively. The Xbox 360 currently sells for $299 and $399 and Microsoft has announced a $100 HD-DVD add-on drive before the end of this year (most likely prior to the launch of the PlayStation 3). To add to that, the PlayStation 3 ships on the eve of a 65nm die-shrink for the Xbox 360's "Xenos" CPU -- something which will result in a cooler, quieter, and cheaper (read: price drop) Xbox 360.

(And lets be honest, the blu-ray will most likely win the Format war)
Let us indeed be honest. Blu-Ray currently has nothing shipping. HD-DVD is a cheaper, much more reasonable standard. HD-DVD drives are shipping. Toshiba Qosmio's come with HD-DVD drives now. HD-DVD titles are shipping. Blu-Ray drives are planned. Blu-Ray titles are planned.

Buying the $500 is worthless anyways, Exactly like the Core system 360.
The Xbox 360 Core system costs $400 -- less when the PlayStation 3 ships.

Whoa...November 2007? I heard november 06'.

However, I still hold to the fact that Blu-ray will win out in the formats.

And the 360 core system isn't $400, it's $299.

In the end, by the time it comes out, The games will decide who dominates. And with GTA, Killzone, GT and the massive host of other killer apps, I'm thinking playstation...(ESPECIALLY if theres a time crisis game...)

Yeah, I'm sorry, my bad. The "Xenos" CPU die-shrink takes place in 2007... sorry. biggrin

I disagree, and the fact that it's a debateable topic indicates that the presence of either player on either console is, at the moment, irrelevant.

Personally, I don't think the PS3 has that many killer apps... Killzone might be good, Heavenly Sword seems interesting, MGS4 seems cool, but other than that....

The 360 will be on its 2nd year at the PS3's launch, which means it'll have had time to get a lot more games. So really, I doubt that you can buy the PS3 for its games, at launch. Maybe later when it has gotten time to develop.

The Wii is guaranteed to have lots of exclusive games, and any game that it has that is also on the other two consoles will play differently because of the controller. That's part of the reason why I'm planning to get one.

I chose 360 & Wii in the poll, as my girlfriend will castrate me if I don't provide her with more Halo/Mario based goodness.

Not very excited by the PS3, simply because none of the launch titles float my boat. I'll wait and see how it performs as a Blu-ray player.

While my animosity for the PS3 spawned from my outright dislike for Sony....

...I really think the PS3 is horrendously expensive. It's got "bells and whistles" no one will use, but the die-hard PlayStation fans use as a defense for it's grossly inflated price.

Well, no, it's just that its graphics will be equal to the 360's, its online system won't be anywhere near as good as the 360 and the motion controller won't be as good as the Wii's. And you can get the 360 and the Wii for the price of one PS3.

I'm getting a Wii. I want to play games with that controller. Other than that, the other systems just sorta seem like a graphics upgrade to me. That seems sorta pointless. I mean, graphics are fine and all, but they don't matter that much.

I have 10 systems, 8 of which are not from this gen. (I have a PS2 and GCN)

I play my older systems more, because there are so many games for them that are so fun. They had worse graphics, so what? I care way more about gameplay. Just cause something is powerful doesn't make it a good system.

Well for one, it was announced a month or two ago, which means they have had very little time to work on it. Also, the 360's main feature is the online capabilities, and they truely rock. Finally, this is Sony's first foray into online services.

Although I agree that it is possible that they surprise everyone with it, it's nearly impossible that it'll surpass the 360.

Because XBOX Live has been out for awhile now and has now entered into the second generation with the 360, and will have entered into the third generation by the time the PS3 comes out.

I don't doubt that the Sony online system will become better in time, but XBOX Live just has more years on Sony's offering.

But besides the fact that Live has more experience than Sony's online system, there are plenty more features of XBOX Live, which I doubt, unless Sony copies them exactly in their entirety, can exceed.

Live Anywhere has my attention currently. I mean...wow. You can literally use your computer to design a car that can be raced online on your 360!

But yes, Sony could still pull it off with a better online system. The likeliness of that happening seems very slim.

Don't worry, it's Sony. It's not in their nature to copy someone's product, make it worse, and sell it for a lot more.

after fully watching all the E3 2006 conferences, I have to say, Sony had the most technically impressive show, especially with the Tiger woods tech demo.

Nintendo looks pretty damn fun though, and since a lot of people will get a wii because of it's price point, I don't see a reason to buy one because I can play one of my friends.

Microsoft's conference was interesting, because they're primary speaker reminded me alot of a foreign used car salesman. However, after finding out about they're GTA4 deal and seeing the full first level of gears of war, PLUS the halo trailer and the fact that they're console is Far easier to develop for, PLUS the HD-dvd addon and The Camera AND the fact that they'll have a headstart in alot of departments because of the fact it's the only console available makes me think I'll probably get one when they release a Killer app.

I currently own a groovy PC and an Xbox360 (for times when I need an escape from the keyboard) and I'm totally happy with both. I'll consider getting a Wii a short while after it's release purely for the back catalogue of games it'll have. The glory days for Nintendo were really when the Snes was going full tilt and I'd love to be able to play some of the classics again.

Well even though I am a diehard Sony guy, I ended up buying an Xbox360 and have been VERY VERY happy with it. Online play, and graphics are mindblowing. Street to street fighting, in a gritty middle eastern town with 24 other people jumping in humvees and tanks with your team mates for a quick strike on a flag base, all the while dodging attack helicopters, rockets and machine guns is simply amazing. Not to mention the thrill of sniping a helicopter pilot out of his cockpit from across the map (BattleField2: Modern Combat). I've also got COD2 (insane single player and very fun online) and GRAW (excellent infantry combat).

I think I'll still end up buying a PS3 when it comes out if I have the funds. I just hope that Sony doesnt end up going with its insane upgradeable (aka computer) idea, I dont want to pay $600 for a console only to have to upgrade it later to play new games (I could just buy a PC then).

I bought a 360 at the beginning of summer, even though I told myself I was going to wait for the first price drop. Oh well.

I gotta admit, I'm not too happy with it right now. A lot of the games are not worth buying, and most of them are actually slimmed down versions of the same game coming out on original XBox. Slightly better graphics are no replacement for solid gameplay and features.

Although I think it will turn around in the next few months, since developers seem to be gearing up around now. Rainbow Six: Vegas and the new Splinter Cell look great and a lot of fun; Dead Rising looks to be decently fun, but I'm questioning the longevity of it. Then further down the line Halo 3 and GTA4 look great as well.

I'll probably end up buying a Wii just because I love Nintendo and their games. Plus the name. I mean 'Wii' come on, that's perfect.

I'll also be buying a Wii. It truly does look like 'more fun for less money'.
Besides, I would rather pay good money for a system that does gaming right (Wii) then pay tons of money for a system that does everything OK (Ps3). And the 360 just does everything wrong. wink

I'm getting a Wii on launch day.

Apart from that, I don't really have any interest in the other 2. However, if somehow PS3 ends up with a Chrono Trigger remake (which there's no sign of) I'd have to get a PS3 me'

Yes, the PS3 costs an arm and a leg but you can't say it's stupid. If I played one I'd have alot of fun. I love good graphics, and I would love to play a PS3 as much as a Wii.

And by the way I'm probably not going to buy one. Well atleast I'm not. I'll probably get it a Wii or something on my birthday. (Which is in November)

The wii. For once I have to agree with Jabooza. I don't really want a 360, and there's no way I could convince my parents to buy me a PS3.

That's crazy!!! eek Do realize that if you purchase the "cheap" versions of both systems then your paying $800 for video game hardware when you could just pay $250 or less to get a Wii when it comes out?!?!

You when you find out that Wii is better than both consoles put together: cry

That's just ever so slightly opinionated, the Wii as great a novelty it is... Is being sold largely as an 'add-on' console as it is less a technological step forwards in the console race as it is a 'step to the side'. For me it's biggest selling point is it's back catalogue.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be buying a Wii. But it'll be as backup to my 360, which is incidentally a backup to my PC.

On some points I agree with you, though I have to say that the 360 has so far hit a good mark between running games my pc can't handle as well as offering console games unavailable on the pc.

Ghost Recon : AW, PGR3, Burnout Revenge, Table Tennis, Oblivion, Hitman : Blood Money are all massive amounts of fun especially when you take the multiplayer online (something the 360 does exceptionally well). August really is a dead month for gaming on the whole, that I get the impression that developers have been holding off so that they can barrage the console with good games at the same time interest might be shifting to the PS3 - Scheduling Halo 3 for release at the same time as the PS3 being indication of this.

Let's not forget that the Grand Theft Auto series will now hit the 360 first as well as the Final Fantasy series moving onto 360 along with Smackdown (which I'm not really a fan of). Though you have to admit - that's a potentially collossal dent in the PS3 right there. You raised an entirely true point with:
Slightly better graphics are no replacement for solid gameplay and features.
For which I have a two word reply : "RIIIIDDDGGE RACCEERRRRR!". smile

I like to consider myself pretty neutral in the console wars though I suppose there's always a tendency to defend/preach about what you've spent large amounts of money on. There's a good chance the PS3 will surprise me and be a big hit just so long as the few classics which hit the PS2 continue onto it - I'm talking about Katamari Damacy, Forbidden Siren and Guitar Hero. The throne for beat em ups is still there for the taking too. This generation is definitely interesting as all 3 consoles are in some way radically different and so of course, will appeal to entirely different needs.

Just to conclude, there's a demo of Dead Rising on Live right now. I'd advise that you download it - it's only around 15 minutes long but extremely replayable, comparable perhaps to a more complicated Crazy Taxi with Zombies, despite it's relative simplicity it remains absolutely captivating.

-Hybrid.

P.S. - The new splinter cell does look truely awesome, I'm assuming you've seen the leaked multiplayer videos - awesome.

The PS3 thing was a joke razz

$599 isn't worth a graphically updated version of a game I could probably just get on the virtual console... or play on my SNES.

Wii all the way.

No console bashing thanks. All the new consoles have their good points and bad points. This post is about which one you are going to buy, not why you think the others suck.

Oh, sorry. redface

I didn't mean that's ALL the PS3 can do. I meant that getting itt for a Chrono Trigger remake would be a stupid stupid reason to buy it.

PS3 is a very substantial system.

I just don't have the cash razz

PS3 is OK, Sony isn't thinking out of the box though. If Nintendo was doing the same as Sony and Microsoft then the PS3 would be the best (hardware-wise not price-wise). The 360 looks fine except it takes to long to load and I'm just not really an Xbox fan.

Haha that was good. Anyway, I have a XBOX 360 and I'm happier than ever with it. I don't need a Wii or a PS3 because the 360 does what I want very very well.

I just recently bought Madden 07 and Saints Row.

Madden 07 is everything I expected but Saints Row is just awesome!

I was expecting some GTA ripoff and while the two are very similar Saints Row has so much more functionality and great side games. If you have the 360 you need Saints Row.

Hehe, well to get to the point, NHL 07 for the 360 is just the best hockey game I have ever played. The most realistic and the absolute funnest. Saints Row, come on, that game just rocks! Rockstar doesn't own the genre of games that SR and GTA are, they just own GTA. Other developers are free to make games using the genre that GTA is in. It's only GTA where people call games ripoffs. Sports game?

I was actually going to buy a 360, but then Schwar asked me, simply "why would you buy a 360?"

I was unable to answer...
And now, I'm glad he said that. I don't really like the Xbox 360...

I have Saints Row and I absolutely love it, but come on. Its a blatant ripoff of GTA. Everything except for the few things it does better then (smarter cops, graphics, gangs, RAGDOLL, targeting system ect), its copied directly from GTA, the camera, how you jack cars, radio stations, and pretty much all the little details are exactly the same. If you've played GTA:SA it will be VERY familiar.

Last gen I was a pretty big defender of PC gaming and didn't own any consoles...

This gen, I was planning to buy a Wii and use my PC for normal gaming, but now that we've got more info about games coming out on each console, I've decided against this plan.

Instead, I'm getting a 360, and greatly slowing down my PC graphic card update cycle (from once per year to once per 2 years, probably). Reason I decided to do this can be summarised in 3 words: price, exclusives, support.

Basically, when I upgrade my GPU once per year, I have trouble playing new games only 6 months later. It also costs 300-400$ per year, which is huge compared to a single 500$ investment, not to mention that all 360 games are guaranteed to have a playable framerate. Take Oblivion, for example: on my PC I had to run it with options slightly below medium, and it looked quite ugly and ran at about 25 fps. When I played it on 360 it looked identical to what it looks like maxed out on a PC, except it was butter-smooth.

Secondly, the 360 has TONS of great exclusives. Dead Rising is the best example that is out right now (it's probably my favorite game since Half-Life 2), but others like Halo, Gears of War, Saint's Row, etc. are quite interesting as well. A lot of games are console-only these days, too, so you could also count console exclusives like Call of Duty 3 and such.

And thirdly, the 360 is the only system that gives you the feeling that people are constantly working to improve it. MS is making sure to secure great exclusives, to add new features regularly, and just basically do what Blizzard does for WoW, on a wider scale. Now you can't get this on a PC obviously since it isn't a unified network of controlled machines.

So, yeah, that's my current view of things.

Pooky, you forgot Assassin's Creed.

I heard the port of Oblivion from 360 to PC was just poorly done and even high end PCs couldn't run it as well as a 360 without a bunch of mods and stuff.

Here's my plan: I am getting a Wii (obviously) and any games I can afford. Later on, if I have any money (I have several more important things to buy) I will get either an XBox 360 or a PS3. The only thing swaying me to PS3 is MGS4. I'll have to just compare the lineup to price ratio sometime near XMas '07. I think if I get any of the 2 power consoles it'll be for Xmas '07.

Serpent - Assassin's Creed has a PC version, too. It'll probably run like crap, though.

And Dead Rising > MGS4
