___________________________________________

HAUNTFEST SUBMISSIONS THREAD!

Time to submit your films! This year, things are going to run a little bit differently. This year, we will be hosting all of your films on our website, courtesy of King Rhymes. We, however, are not accepting e-mailed transfer of the videos, so you need to find temporary hosting for the film, just until we can download it, convert it to our specifications, and put it where it needs to be. We recommend YouSendIt. You can email us your YouSendIt links at hauntfest [at] gmail [dot] com.
Every submission will get their own topic on the Hauntfest Forums, and this is where we would like you to post all reviews and criticisms, so make sure you check that out.

THE SECOND ANNUAL HAUNTFEST :: SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

1. Finish up your film smile
2. Host the film somewhere (I.E. under your domain, or YouSendIt)
3. Post your submission as a reply to this topic, using the correct format (see below)
4. You will receive notification when your submission has been processed and posted on the Hauntfest Website.

THE SECOND ANNUAL HAUNTFEST :: SUBMISSION FORM

You must provide all of these details when submitting your film:

Title:
Author:
Studio:
Rating: (We will provide this)
Screenshot:
Description: (Brief description/Synopsis of your movie)
Length: (We will provide this)
Filesize: (We will convert your film and post the resulting filesize)
Link: ((Temporary) Location of your movie on the web)

THE SECOND ANNUAL HAUNTFEST :: SUBMISSIONS

Happy Haunting!

See you on the 31st!

Miker & TimmyD.

Being as we still have a week to submit entries (and I can't get the audio mixing right on this darned film yet to save my hide) it might be worth stickying this post just for the next week or so? Just a thought.

We'll talk to a mod and see if we can't have this thrown onto announcer status as opposed to the original thread.

I'm going to take miker and Timmy's advice and just shoot as furiously as possible, regardless of how crappy it is. I'm assuming you guys would rather see something than nothing, right?

I think my circumstances will turn out just like the Action Contest, and I won't be able to turn on it. Man, this sucks. On another note, I haven't watched Jazzmanian's, but the screenshot looks promising.

Jazz, your film was OK, but I felt the biggest thing you could have done to improve it would be snappier editing. Now I don't mean have lots of really fast cuts, when I watched it the cuts often seemed to be half a second to late, with new footage starting around half a second early. Some of the shots felt like the actors were waiting for there queue, it was literally the difference of about 15 frames between good and bad cuts.

Some things to keep in mind for the future would be background noise and lighting. Sometimes the background noise would change dramatically between cuts which were very distracting. The shots in the bar were the worst; ADR would have helped that scene quite a bit. The lighting was not bad, not that 'muddy home video look' we all hate but it could have been more dramatic in the basement. Don't light with the room lights, brink a lamp or two down and cast some cool shadows, and have fun with it.

Thanks, SlothPaladin. That's the kind of feedback I'll be looking for. Believe it or not, the movie looked a *lot* worse before. biggrin Even with this only being my third film, it was by far the most huge project we ever attempted and it was a learning experience you wouldn't believe. I'll definitely try to take what I learned while doing it and any feedback I get into my next projects.

Editing I'll just have to work on. It's harder than it looks to the beginner, but I'll get there. I can tell I made some bad choices, but I know I'll improve over time. Picking the cuts is impressing me more and more with how tough it can be.

Audio is another huge area. I only just started learning to use Audacity on this film and it's a learning curve. The room noise in the bar was just god awful and I cleaned it up as best I could, but it was never good. The "noise removal" tool on Audacity was just disappointing, so I tried to dampen the over loud room noise with it as I went, with disappointing results.

Lighting... eh. Actually it wasn't room lighting in the basement. I had three 150W work lights down there, but I was so afraid of having shadows, rather than working them into the scenes, that I used a scrim in front of all that lights all the time and probably damped them out too much.

Back to the drawing board!

The entire first 4 mintues of my film had to have the noise removed and I was able to get a fairly good result. You'll see when I post it. I learned from that, that hanging mics from our auditorium make lousy boom mics.

How come? Seeing as FXhome.com has been used to publicise the competition and that there are many FXhomers submitting films, it would seem odd to insist people go to a completely different website to discuss the entries.

If you are worried about having lots of entries and it being an administrative problem, simply open a secondary thread where people can discuss the submissions, while keeping this thread as a listing.

That was one part that had me raising my eyebrows. But also, it appears that the films are going to be hosted at another site, and I'll confess that I was a bit surprised to see that my movie suddenly had been edited and had a new trailer at the beginning of it. Also, hosting them elsewhere drives traffic away from the FXhome cinema, which is arguably one of their strong marketing tools. (e.g. "look at the cool movies people are making with our products. You can too, and at a very affordable price" kind of thing.) We already have a great vehicle in place for screening films - the cinema - so why switch now?

Don't get me wrong. I think it was *very* cool of King Rhymes to create a new site to feature the contest, and having a discussion forum there could certainly be said to keep a certain amount of contest specific chatting out of the FXhome forums where people not entering or interested wouldn't have to wade through it. Well done to King Rhymes on that count for sure!

But it did seem a bit of a diss to FXhome to start dragging everything away from here, particularly after the powers that be immediately offered up 1K force for a prize, stickied posts as needed and really jumped on the effort to highlight the contest. And isn't it really pretty much a contest between FXhome community members? I know it doesn't say you *have to* be in the community to enter, but that's pretty much how it works out, eh?

I'm glad Sollthar pointed that out, because I had been wondering about those things for a bit now. I'm not the one running the contest, so I just kept going along and followed the rules. And I think it's great the TimmyD and Miker went to the trouble of organizing all of this on their own time, so props to them for that. But this does seem like sort of a kick in the pants to FXhome the way it's playing out.

Yeah, I'm waiting for a statement really. At the moment, all looks rather disappointingly dodgy to me for the reasons you mentioned Jazzmanian. Thanks.

Re-Editing videos without approval of the creator?

Trying to force people into your own website?

Force them away from a website that has only supported your contest?

Maybe I got it all wrong though, so I'm hoping for an explanation.

The smartest thing to do was if you could (as said before) open another thread here on FXhome where members could discuss the submissions, and tomorrow by noon, could also start voting for the winner. What I mean is that it's probably best to have the poll here on FXhome to avoid multiple account creation and cheating.

Re-Editing the movies? Why is that?? crazy

Lol, somehow I thought the deadline was the 31th, so I had planned to finnish my movie on saturday.

Then I thought I could just cook up something fast and stupid today, but I don't have any film for my camera.

So, that's a shame.

I'm still excited to see all the movies, and give 30 force to the winner of course.

By having the reviews be conducted on the other site, the submission thread has only one purpose, to submit your film. That way, each movie has their own thread on the Hauntfest site where people can review the films.

There are unofficial polls on every submission post on the Hauntfest forums, the final and official poll will be on FXhome.

I am not re-editing the films. I am adding a short (fifteen second) intro to each one that says "Hauntfest Official Submission," and compressing it into our desired Quicktime format. Hardly re-editing. And if they don't want this to happen to their film, they should not submit it.

And we're not trying to force people away from FXhome and onto the Hauntfest website. FXhome and the Hauntfest are seperate entities, and they should appear so. FXhome supports us by allowing the contest to be run on the forums, and this year, offering up some extra force. The idea is that we conduct most of the business on the Hauntfest site, but officially run the contest here, as it is open only to FXhome members.

Sorry if i've contradicted myself anywhere, I'm tired. If you have any more questions, ask me.

Why is the sky blue?

I can understand what TimmyD is trying to do but I can also see the logic in eveyone else. Ok how about we try this. Since KingRhymes was nice enough to create a hauntfest website for the contest we should conduct our reviews there but have the main poll here since everyone is registered here and it is easier to do it that way.

Also to solve the multiple account/voting/cheating thing. make it so no one's vote counts if they joined after September 22 so people can't cheat.

Does that make everyone happy.

The sky is blue, mainly, because of the reflective properties of the gases in the atmosphere, and the fact that a ton of this planet is ocean. The sun bounces off all the water, and that blueish light reflects off the atmosphere, creating the blue sky. At least, that's what I remember from second grade science.

And everything you said after that was how it originally was.

I am just trying to get people to come to an agreement. And really was it like that because I honestly didn't know, I came up with that myself to try to quell the riot before it started. I guess great, sexy minds think alike.

Simply adding a "Certificate of Authenticity" to the begining of a film can hardly be considered "Re-Editing", don't you think?

Sollthar wrote:

The truth is the majority of the contest matter is happening here on Fxhome.

TimmyD wrote:

UPDATE: All of those who plan on submitting a film need to register on the Hauntfest Forums in order to reply to comments and criticisms on your submission, as that will not be taking place on the FXhome.com Forums.

Thank you for your cooperation.
TimmyD + Miker
I think the main reason for the website is to bring a little more publicity to the contest itself. Trying to give it a little more spark, ya know? PLUS, it gives us more room to go in depth on each individual entry on a forum that's dedicated for the sole purpose of this contest.

Sollthar wrote:

Are we expected to conduct all manner of the contest here at FXhome? And why is this all coming up now, when it was blatently stated earlier on the origional thread. We aren't shunning FXhome in any way by advising people to post their reviews on the Hauntfest Website, as it was a stated announcement on the origional Hauntfest thread. It seems you've got the wrong idea about what we're trying to accomplish here.

Jazzmanian: What do you have to complain about? The "Official Hauntfest Participent" intro is to be added to every film. Not just yours.

Maybe we should have said this before hand aswell? I didn't think it would be such a big deal.

As miker said, it's essentially a certificate of authenticity. There are many things wrong with your statements about the cinema. First of all, the contest never had anything to do with the cinema, you could, if you wanted, submit the film in, like Redhawk has done with Cell, but the contest has nothing to do with it. Also, you don't need to use FXhome products in the Hauntfest, so there goes the "look what i made with this cool software from FXhome" aspect.

King Rhymes is indeed being very helpful, providing the hosting and all. I made the site so that FXhome and Hauntfest are kept seperate, as they should be. The Hauntfest is not run by FXhome, it is simply run through their forums and with their community, and we thank them for allowing us to host these contests.

Jazzmanian wrote:

But it did seem a bit of a diss to FXhome to start dragging everything away from here, particularly after the powers that be immediately offered up 1K force for a prize, stickied posts as needed and really jumped on the effort to highlight the contest. And isn't it really pretty much a contest between FXhome community members? I know it doesn't say you *have to* be in the community to enter, but that's pretty much how it works out, eh?
Again, as miker said, we aren't dragging traffic from FXhome... and if we were, I assure you, the five minutes spent on the Hauntfest site as opposed to FXhome wouldn't kill business. It, in fact, does say you have to be a member of FXhome to participate, so there we go. If people find the Hauntfest site and want to participate, they have to register at FXhome— bing! More FXhome traffic.

I hope you see our points now. We thank FXhome for allowing us to host it here and for the 1000 force prize, we are not trying to hurt them in any way. If anything, the Hauntfest site will generate more FXhome users (if you search on Google for "hauntfest," would you rather have a whole website about it or one topic on some effects site?).

We should have a winner by the 31st. This is when we will transfer the force prizes to the winner. It will be 30 force (or more if you decide) per person who stated they are "IN".

I thought submissions closed at midnight last night!

It says 12am on the 25th, which means you have 'up to' the 25th, not on the 25th. I'm not bothered if its extended by 24hrs but can we have some clarification on the rules? There's some people saying last midnight, some say this midnight coming up, and some are saying midday!

You may not use Google Video. Use YouSendIt, if you can't get a 20 minute film compressed to less than 100 MB, somethings wrong.

Well done Redhawk! That was a great film, and it probably deserves to win.

I'd just like to point out that although 13 people have voted at this point, my webhost tells me that only 7 have downloaded my film. I just find that a little strange. I don't want to take anything away from Redhawk, and i don't want to rant either, but it seems contests could be better structured in the future, since people have voted for certain films while not even watching others.

Any future contests I am involved in will have a panel of judges picked by users in the community. I think that would be the only way to solve this problem.

How would that prove anything? Force doesn't prove superior by any means.

I think picking judges based on their well thought out and accurate reviews from the past is the only way to go. Force has nothing to do with it.

Ah, I just meant users that didn't have 0 force, so people wouldn't create multiple accounts.. smile

That's how it will be in our future contests.

Congratulations to everyone who participated and entered in this year's HAUNTFEST Horror Film Challenge. I sincerely apologize for the fact that I was unable to convert the other submissions in time, we are going to need to change that next year. Good work everyone.

If you havent already, please begin to transfer your force points to Redhawksrymmer. Everyone who stated they are "In" must transfer AT LEAST 30 force points to our winner. Congrats Redhawk, and a huge thank you to everyone who participated and supported. And a MEGA-HUGE thank you to King Rhymes, TimmyD, and FXhome for the support and allowing us to run the contest here (for the most part).

Thanks a bunch! biggrin

Thanks everyone who supported me in the creation of my movie, and thanks for creating this great contest. I might have a small contest I want to run myself, but that might not take place before sometime next year... wink

Multiwagon - Heh, no worries. I'm not that good at creating comedys and I will probably not enter the comedy contest. Good luck to you though and everybody else who is entering it.

Thanks again!
