Afternoon to you all. I thought I would start a topic and keep it as up-to-date as possible on my next short film I'm currently in pre-production for.

It's working title is 'Deep Freeze'.

'Deep Freeze' is a short psychological thriller, written by myself and loosely based on an urban myth, needless to say, at the moment I don't want to give much away, as its a script that reveals quickly and drives rapidly through to the end, with a couple of twists along the way.

This time I hope to further bridge the gap between professionalism and the no-budget strings I'm producing this on.

With the experience I've gained working in the industry, I hope to deliver something visually delightful, as well as something raw and 'visually disturbing'.

I'm casting at the moment, on Friday just gone I went out and had a coffee with my 'now' lead actress, and today I'm talking to agents regarding filling in the other roles in my quest for as much professionalism as possible - and yeap, all for no money! smile I'm also looking to get some cameo's from actresses that you all might have heard of.. smile

The past two weeks have been difficult, the film requires a set to be built (a bathroom) and then access via the removal of walls onto the set. In the next few days I'll place up photographs of how the scaled model I'm building looks.

I'd love to keep you all here at fxhome informed, so I hope this topic can act as a sort of good idea for me to do, as well as keep the community that helped me start making films informed on what I'm up to these days. I hope to be working with a couple of fxhomers on this one as well...

A few of you have spotted my imdb profile and congratulated me on that (heres looking at you Bryce and JT9) - thanks for keeping an eye out for me! wink smile

I hope this one goes well and you guys enjoy 'Deep Freeze' as it makes its way down the production path and then I hope into festivals. I'm already stressed to the max, but as long as I don't lose my hair like last year I'll be alrite!

Keep up the filming!
Joby (er-no)

Update : 11/12/06

It's been a while since I posted this original message! Since then 'Deep Freeze' has gone under a lot of changes, with cast members bring confirmed and then cancelled, and then set locations and other locations being thrown around and the such.

After six days of none stop work, myself and the three other people involved in the entire production have finally managed to build and tile an entire bathroom set, and then deconstruct that once built, and move it piece by piece into a studio for filming TOMORROW.

HERE COME THE PHOTOS:

A model of the set made out of paper two months ago:

They took long enough to scavange, but with a bit of spit and polish these will come up nicely!

Destroyed a forest to build the set.

The set is built up for the first time:

We'd never tiled before...it's been hellish.

Broken down and ready to carry 1/4 mile bit by bit. Each bit weighed about 120+kg. It hurt. biggrin

Even more fun, a random guy wanted to test his timelapse equipment with his new camera so most of the stuff we do (including the filming tomorrow) will be completely timelapsed. Which could be very fun to watch back, especially with the main actress getting in and out of the bath.

Check out the test timelapse here:
TIME LAPSE Test

UPDATE
19th June 2007!

Hey guys,

Sorry I've been so quiet on the front of this production! The four main people making it (myself included) had to finish a degree off as well! The film itself had a title change to 'Skin Deep' and is currently at a few festivals in the selection process! Good news is that yesterday it was confirmed for selection at a large stateside festival (East coast!)

So yeah, That's the deal with formerly known as 'Deep Freeze'! Thanks again everyone for their kind words of support and wooo! Here's to the next one

Official website will be launched soon with a teaser trailer, I think I'll make a new topic for that though! wink

It made it into a festival or two, next thing I know, IMDB have updated it via one of the festival 'listings' pages.

Made me chuckle, now I keep having to sort it out because they update it wrongly, originally I was also the composer (doubt that!). Although my IMDB is growing more than I ever expected! Gotta keep up the hard work myself! smile

Thanks for all the kind words guys! I'll keep you all updated! Ashman - if your about feel more than welcome to come up north a bit on the set filming days...

That goes for any of you.

Golden Compass is the best feature I've worked on so far, really enjoyable cast and crew with some sublime sets and creations. smile the downside is the long tiring days of about 16 hours work... throw a few of them together back to back and zzZZZzzz!

Thanks for the luck with DeepFreeze, I'll need it for this one smile

Update: 24th November:

A second location bar/club has been found and established. The first set - a four walled bathroom is being built at the moment and three of the flats have been built together. I'm currently casting two remaining roles in the film and have secured the lead actress. On the 12/13th of December I film at the first location and on the 19th December I film at the second and third location.

I've also got to get around 50 extras for the 19th December, so if you are in the London area and are aged between 21-30 then grab the details from me and I'll see you there!

I'm sure I'll begin to update this topic with photos and the such very soon, including photos of the confirmed actresses.

Tiles. Hurt.

But I'm a tile pro now, adhesive, grouting... laying, spacers. It's all in the noggin now.

10 didn't fit. TEN. Ten isn't bad out of 1022 laid.

smile

Gotta be up in 6 hours to do blocking with the lead actress and then film for a further 11. It's mad, but I have a few great people helping and two solid runners biggrin

Not sure how I've completely missed this up till now. Can't wait to see it - you improved massively between Crawling Space and Project One, and I expect the leap here will be even larger, not least because of all the experience you've been getting of late.

UPDATE:

Sexy sexy title change. I won't unveil that yet.

I took an initial break away from the project whilst I completed a few other more 'important' things life put in my way! But in this week I've spent around 15 hours a day going through the capturing (which was a heavy process as I had to capture it 3 times in total thanks to beautiful codec issues)... but thats another story!

I doubt I'm going to choose to build a set again! Especially a tiled one! however nearly every camera angle was made possible due to the extra room in and around the set we had created.

The break away from the project helped me have refreshed and more focus driven goals towards its completion, and I'm sure I'll be posting some screenshots soon. Its such a short short, that posting any footage would give the game away. So I'll leave you all in suspense!

Thanks for all your interest, and cheers Tarn wink

I hope this'll be a short film unlike any other in its genre or 'budget' range. smile

Sounds great, I'll be looking forward to more updates on the progress of this movie.

I wish I was more resourceful so that I could find a nice amount of actors and be able to pull filming off. I have ideas, but lack cast and location.

I love the time lapse video, looks like a lot of fun, laying those tiles and all...biggrin Best of luck!

I know you're not up to answer much er-no... pulling a Halo 3 I see. biggrin But I do have one question about this film because I'm so psyched for it. Are you going to have many special effects, or will it be character/artistically driven?
(Not to say films with sfx don't have good characters and directing...)

Hey man, nice question! Tarn was asking me the same thing the other day!

'Deep Freeze' (although its name has been changed) is my second short film, and the first I've actually written and then directed alone, throughout production I've been treating it as an 'extract' or 'segment' of something bigger, as I have a feature script in development with the basis of the same characters and thoughts behind it.

I hope my own artistic interpretation of camera and editing comes across in the final product, its a pretty twisted and surreal short film. The spent a while on the script! I guess once said and done the film will require full attention from the audience for the preferred reading. This is very much an artistic and character driven piece that I hope will come through for me and all involved.

So unless I filmed my 'alternate' ending, there are no guns, no special effects, unless you account water as a special effect wink

You have to just focus and give it your best mate. I've been told no a thousand times, and always try and aim way above what I can actually achieve, that way I learn and can adjust. Actresses were very hard to find (especially with the specifics of the film hehe) but if you give it enough you can get them. I've been told the very point of short films is not to make it 100% perfect, its to present an idea and display your own abilities.

Laying the tiles was indeed a learning experience, but I have to admit, I'll turn away from films and go into tiling if all goes wrong. biggrin

Mikes brother,

i was talking to him about the film trying to get ollie to send me a screen shot but ollie wouldnt evil lol after that i was sure i had heard of deep freeze before on here so i went searching and found this post again and showed by brother with the thought that it was a different film with the same name then he told me about that picture and joby was directing it and then it clicked because i remember ollie trying to get bathroom stuff for a set.

when you first posted the time lapse i didnt notice ollie or matt untill i watched it yesterday and i paused it a few times.

i was really impressed with the trailer for project one (even showed mike but he didnt know at the time, or he just wasnt paying attention like normal lol)

crazy! cant w8 to see the film tho, does ollie "act" in it aswell lol?

Are you planning a DVD release similar to Project One where the teaser shows on FXHome and then the full thing is for sale, or do you think this will end up in the cinema?

Either way, I want Project One and this in my DVD collection. (When are you going to sell me P1, eh? smile)

Either way, I want Project One and this in my DVD collection. (When are you going to sell me P1, eh? smile)
Yeah, I missed my opportunity to by Project One, so I'm definitely picking up a copy when they go on sale again.

Official website will be launched soon with a teaser trailer, I think I'll make a new topic for that though lol!
Question: If the movie has been done for a while, and gotten selected for fetivals, why not just release the whole movie instead of a teaser? Some sort of festival restriction, or are you trying to hype it, or what? Just wondering.
