THE FIRST ANNUAL COMEDYCON - OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

EDIT
------------------------------------------------------------------------

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER - JAZZMANIAN

Being the only submission to reach us by the deadline Jazzmanian has won by default. I haven't watched it yet, but well done on getting a film submitted.

(best quality) http://www.sendsardinesplease.com/Movies/Zombies/ZZZombieShort.wmv

For those that don't like WMV

(low quality) http://www.sendsardinesplease.com/Movies/Zombies/Zombies_Lo.mov

------------------------------------------------------------------------
END UPDATE

1. All movies submitted must be funny, or at least attempt it!

2. All movies submitted be a minimum of 5 minutes in length, and not exceed 30 minutes (including all titles and credits)

3. All movies submitted must include………………A Santa hat! That’s right. There is no ‘spoken line’ which must be included. Since we know not everyone will own this particular item you are free to use an image/video of Santa’s hat, but this must appear in shot, and not be composited!!!

4. All entrants must hold copyright of, or have permission (and proof thereof) from copyright holder, to use all aspects of the movie submitted. This does not include product placement, visual or otherwise.

5. The Entry Fee……30 Force, as standard, donated directly to the winner of the contest at the end. This means that you must have a minimum of 49 Force in your account in order transfer the prize should you not win.

6. The Prize……The total Force collected, 30 from each participant.

7. The Winner……will be decided by a panel of judges AND by the popular vote. Judges are yet to be finalized, but there is expected to be 9 judges, plus 2 votes being gained from the popular vote as decided by a poll here at fxhome.com. The judge’s voting will be ‘Olympic style’, in that after each round of voting the film with the lowest votes will be removed, and all the judges will re-vote. This excludes the popular vote which will not be recast and those 2 votes will be attributed to the film with the most of the popular vote still in contention for the prize.

8. Submissions……must be made in private by PM or e-mailing a link to your hosted film to me, by the submission deadline. Submission must NOT be posted in the fxhome cinema or anywhere else on the internet until the winner has been declared. This is to ensure all films are available to download at the exact same time.

9. IMPORTANT DATES (All times are in FXHOME TIME – GMT)

- Monday 6th November – Contest Announced

- Monday 20th November – You must declare you are ‘in’ on or before this date

- Wednesday 20th December – All Movies must be submitted on or before this date

- Sunday 24th December (Christmas Eve) – Winner Announced

10. Any film found to be in breach of these rules will not be eligible to win the prize

Could you post a few expansions on these rules please? Questions follow, just to avoid a few bits of confusion that seem to have arisen on the last contest.

1. Are the films to be hosted someplace else for the judging and viewing, where you will download them and put them someplace else? Or will they be downloaded and viewed for judging at the source where the creators originally place them and PM you the location?

2. Are there format restrictions? The last contest restricted entries to *only* .MOV format, which was obviously an issue for some folks. Or will it be any popular format?

3. Will the festival directors be editing the films, and if so how? (This isn't neccesarily a bad thing or a huge issue.. just nice to know up front.)

4. Will the threads for review and comments be posted in a specific thread or set of threads here on FXhome, or will there be some separate web site / forum be set up where all of that takes place?

5. Once the festival is complete, I assume the creators are allowed to still submit them to the cinema here?

6. Follow-on to number five... and this would obviously require the endoresement, agreement and participation of the FXhome web site powers that be, but might another option not be to have all submissions sent ahead of time to the FXhome cinema, clearly marked as entries for the contest, and then (again, only with the agreement of the website powers) have them prep them all in advance, but not post them until the deadline and launch them all on the same day for reviewing and judging? That way, all of the reviews are done in the cinema under the exact same viewing conditions, plus driving traffic to the cinema? (Just a thought... not a deal breaker either way, obviously, but it seem like with enough advance notice the fine folks running the cinema could pull that off.)

Please keep in mind these are not "gripes"... just figured that clarification up front would help to keep down any potential questions or problems later on in the process.

Haha, this is honestly right when I was going to post the Ben and Atom Con-athon, where you create any movie based around a heist or con. I'm in, nonetheless.

Multiwagon, I already read the portion you quoted. But since it hasn't actually started yet I figured there was room to navigate if they wanted to make any changes or at least add some clarifications.

As to the "in" list, I'm most definitely in for donating force to the winner, but I have no idea if we'll be able to pull off a film by then.

Oh, man... I would SO definitely enter a "happy flower movie contest" regardless of the rules, just for the name. biggrin

Ok, i'm trying not to play a big role in running this, cos i want to enter, and don't want to be seen to be cheating, but in answer to u'r questions Jazz...

A1. No films will be hosted by us. All judges/viewers will download direct from you at source.

A2. Feel free to use .avi or .mov. Obviously you should use a common compression codec so that everyone can view it.

A3. Since you will host your own film no editing of films can or will take place.

A4. Reviews/comments will take place at fxhome.com, though see point A6.

A5. Yes. You are free to submit to the cinema after the contest, although see point A6.

A6. This is a very excellent idea Jazz, but would require the fxhome team to be onboard. In theory all entries will be submitted to the cinema once completed, but the fxhome team will hold them back until 21st December, at which point they will all be released. This also solves the comments problem, since each film will automatically be given its own thread in the cinema section. We will contact the team later today regarding this point.

Additionally...

All purple and red saber users out there beware! We have randomly selected nine of you to act as judges, and will be approaching you about it shortly.

Woolgie.

im guessing a fx home product needs to be used?
if so can it just be something like grading or a radom clone in the background?
not many comedys need muzzle flashes and explosions and stuff, well unless your making a spoof action movie of some sort

also does 'All entrants must hold copyright of, or have permission (and proof thereof) from copyright holder, to use all aspects of the movie submitted. This does not include product placement, visual or otherwise.' mean i can stick a certain product in the film as part of a song/ true story(its an addiction)?

you need not use an fxhome product if you wish not to.

as for the copyrighting question, you cannot use copyrighted music etc but it is not feesbale to ban product placement, for example, a logo on an item of clothing. this should be obvious but i put it in so that the rules were clear.

thanks shmede

right, gotta say, the question was not about if the music was copyrighted, it was asking about would it be possibal to name and show a product clearly in a self written song, sorry for not being clear.

Even though it's probably unintentional, I've laughed my ass off at everything jgtrox2 has done. jgtrox, you should just make a regular serious movie and play it completely straight, that way it'll come out ridiculously funny.

I have a video about Frederick Douglass's views on slavery from his narrative due on Friday, and I can't find any black guys that are willing to play slaves in it (go figure), so I'm going to have to have white guys play 1800's oppressed Africans, and it's going to have to be done in the hour afterschool tomorrow before the sun goes down, If all goes correctly, this may be my entry for the ComedyCon, because it will come out effin' hilarious. Unintentionally so, but still.

You just need to make sure that you get one really, really pale, nerdy looking white kid with horn rimmed glasses and give him a line like, "Damn. I'm SO effing tired of the white man always keeping us down!"

A question, along with a reminder to everyone that today is the last day to declare that you're "in" for this.

Question: Is it limited to one submission per participant, or could be submit two films into competition if we're insane enough to finish two comedies by then?

(Yes, I already know how crazy that sounds.)

hey jazz, yeh enter as many films as you like

i would however like to point out that the amount of force won is directly proportional to the number of films entered. this means that if two films are entered by one user, and they do not win, they would have to donate 60 force to the winner.

thanks

Ours is in final editing. I have one finished cut, but it needs some more fine tuning in the editing for lenth and the audio. Hope to be finished this week. We're shooting a second one, but ran into shooting delays with the holidays. Shooting more this week, but it's not looking like it will be done for Christmas at this rate so I'll probably just put it out after the new year unless I get really lucky and ambitious.

Ummm... thanks. I'm afraid this will force me to modify my acceptance speech a bit, which I'd been preparing in the event I managed to win.

"I'd like to thank everyone at the academy who supported our project amidst this wide field of incredibly powerful comedies in competition..."

Perhaps something more along the lines of... "I'd like to thank Georg who yelled at me to remind me that the deadline was almost here so I'd finish." cool

Anyway.. yeah. You can even pull the links out of that other post if you want and I'll just submit it to the cinema with some background description material, stills, etc.

Thanks for running it, though guys. It probably just came at a bad time of year for most people to finish one up on time, what with the holiday crush coming on everyone and all.

EDIT: Submitted to the cinema. Might be a while before it turns up, though. And if you don't click on the .wmv file, I'll warn you in advance, I've had some serious problems with the mp4 in terms of quality and sound synch.
