AlamDV is becoming hugely popular which means this website is getting more and more visitors each day. At the moment we are transferring huge amounts of data (as HTML files and other downloads). Some of you may have noticed the server occasionally crawling to a halt.
To combat this we are looking into ways of restricting the amount people can download. I have currently setup a method that should mean everyone gets a share of the bandwidth (rather than one person being able to use it all). If you access the site too much you will receive a "Service Temporarily Unavailable" notice and you will have to back off for a bit.
You should not experience this during normal browsing. This is aimed at stopping people trying to download the whole site at once with "offline browsers", or trying to download every plugin at the same time.
Id like any feedback about how the site is running for you, especially if you get the "Service Temporarily Unavailable" message during normal use. Also if anyone knows of good Apache (the webserver not the Indian) modules to help a heavily loaded server I love to hear about them

I promoted this site for almost 100 people at my school! and some saw it on my little website.
Love me or hate me!

Good work! Keep promoting the program/site. We will sort out the problems, but we want people to keep coming to the site.

site is running at a pretty good speed for me right now. Is the amount of bandwith you get always the same? Or do you get more if less people are logged on?
Well, when you make your first million you buy lots of bandwith

bandwidth should be shared between the number of current users. (So less people means more bandwidth for you). Ive currently limited the number of connections you can make to the server at once. So you cant download say 10 plugins simultaniously

Our Webguys use software to grant each user access to our Intranet based on our NT/2000 Global User Group. I called to find out what it is that they use but the tech. was out. Something similar might work well here.
First thing, force all users to log in if they want to anythign other than hit the Cinema, Buy, Help or Home sections. It'll cut down on the piracy stuff and stop the crazy postings that occur as well. Likewise, what about some form of time limit based on our "User Status" (like Timed Global Group Restrictions in 2000 Pro). You could give the "site operators" and "mediators" more time based on their "Community" activity. Owners of ALAMDV and heavy "Community" support regulars should be given more time as well (you don't want to limit the value of the support forum by restricting access to it). Might be complicated, but you could log the IP of each download, restricting each user to a certain number per day. Won't help chase off the DSL subscribers like Cypher and I who can easily disconnect and log in with a different IP, but it might be a start.
Hope this is of some use/help. I'll give you the title of that Application when the Websupport guys get back to me. Cheers.
-Neo (celebrating 1 full year of successful ALAMDV use!!!!
BTW - I couldn't login at all yesterday (first time it happened), but this will become as bigger issue as you said as ALAMDV's popularity skyrockets (congratulations to both you and Schwar on that front

Whoah. This is getting pretty off-topic.
Hmmm . . . . I did get a few people to go like "hey, can i borrow that after effects kinda program you got?" and say something like "whoah. it's only $65 bucks. buy it." and sometimes they say "crazy. i didn't know special effects come at such a low price." and then i say "yeah i don't know how they do it." other times they say "hey maybe instead of me buying it could i just borrow it for one day cause it just need it for a little while." then i say something like "if you want it so much you probably could just go and get it off the mac addict disk for free from a while ago." then they say "ok" then as they are walking away i say "oh and after you've tried it out and after its blown your socks off you should buy it" and then they say "man the last time my socks were blown off was when i saw power rangers: the movie" . . . . . . . . .

...ya, that's mechaforce for ya.
Malone, i suggest you simply upgrade the server.
For scope i use www.deltaarc.net,
they have the best prices ive seen, and they can hold up to 20gb/month, and you said you use 7, so this shouldn't be a problem.
I hope you look into it.

What's the "damage on that Cypher (per month). If you still need the CC for it I can help you. Call me on Friday (I'm out of town for a few days) and we'll work something out. Should be able to do some "cleaning" for you by then as well.

heh, took me about a minute to figure out what u were saying, lol.http://www.deltaarc.net/home/services.htm
its quite low actually for the 600mb space and 20gb/month bandwidth. its only $40 US i beleive, per month, that shouldn't bee too much for u alamdv folk.
and yes neo, i still need the CC for that unfortunately. (though i don't need as much as stated above), and i also need to "clean" some of the files for the web. I will need it for Vimy Ridge: Special Edition whichwill be finished im hoping next week.
ok, ill call u friday...and i wan't able to get the names of the board ppl yet
....maybe i should try showing up to class......

Jesus! I thought he meant a month as well!
What about Internic Corporate Hosting. Costly, but fast (we use it).

i thought u meant a month....a day?!??!?!? are you people mad?!?!?!
you really NEED to get a well paying banner company, im serious. u must have hits way up in the 10, 000's a day!
you could easily make enough money to pay off SOMETHING for the server

Yeah. I agree with Cypher there as well. While I love the "Advertisement free" look, you might be overlooking some serious $$$......

The bandwidth is big cos of all the large files that are hosted rather than stupid amounts of page hits and banners dont make much money its only like $3 per 1000 showings for popups, less for banners and they are really annoying.

Post 26 of 35
I haven't really noticed it getting slow...until you mentioned it. I'm on 56k, so that may be why. The amount of bandwidth must not have dipped below the speed of an average modem yet...
Do you know what'd be really cool?
Alamdv community: "What would that be, Sidewinder?"
If there were a stats page where we could see how many hits you have per day, how many hits you've had total, and possibly a graph showing how much hits have increased over time.
That would be very cool.

$3 aint terrible. The people have to still get to the page to download right?
And pop ups or an excessive amount of banners are annoying, not just one at the top of page.

banner schemes are generally pay per click though rather than per show. People are prepared to pay more for popups cos theyre more intrusive

I don't like the idea of banners, maybe 1 on the homepage, but that is it! Allthough, i can't lie: they do bring in some money. I made 20 bucks in 1 month from a music site i made!
I think maybe you should just setup up some mirrors for downloading. Get like 3GB of space and 50GB a bandwith and host about 3/4 of the plug-ins on the server.

I don't think we'll do the banners thing unless we advertise other products by us or our partners. Lets not even think about popups.

The site is running painfully slow this morning...taking as much as 5min just to load a page. I'm using highspeed cable modem and all other sites that I visited this morning are loading at their normal speed. Not sure is this has something to do with the bandwidth restrictions.
Posted: Wed, 29th May 2002, 12:36pm
Post 32 of 35
Yeah, server is slow again because someone is hitting us with their leeching tools again. We are now rejecting the attempts but they still keep trying, and it takes a certain amount of cpu to send the rejection.
We havent imposed any bandwidth limits, we are just limiting simultanious connections. Bandwidth will be naturally limited by the number of people using the site at any one time

Got the 'Service Temporarily Unavailable' message today. I was just responding to a topic, and the STU message was in where the topic review is. I continued posting and browsing and din't get another STU warning, though
