Opening credits sequences can help define your movie early on. They set an atmosphere and a style that can either engage the audience or turn them off. Of course, there are good movies that have poor credits sequences, but a well done introduction can really grab the audience by the collar and show them how things are gonna be. I'll admit, I'm a sucker for a cool credits sequence.

My Personal Favorites:

Catch Me If You Can-The stick figure animation is cool and Williams's score is very catchy.

Fight Club-The brain synapses just got me hooked right away.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory-Regardless of your opinions of Burton's remake, I just thought this scene was whimisical and awesome.

Inside Man-"Chia Chia" would make this good no matter what, but I was really pulled in by the cool text animation resembling combinations lock dials.

Star Wars-No, they're not credits, but its still awesome.

The Usual Suspects-The out-of-focus glistening bay at night. It was so simple, but so utterly cool and noir at the same time.

Napoleon Dynamite-Once again, regardless of how you felt about this movie, this title seqence with names being written in food was very imaginative and fun.

Army of Darkness!!

Introducing OTT music, screams and writing "Bruce Campbell VS the Army of Darkness" as the title just sets the tone perfectly. smile

And Terminator 2.
The burning playground is a very strong image. Combined with the awesome T2 Theme, this is one hell of an intro sequence.

Sleepy Hollow.
Beautyfully integrated fonts and animation. I really like the way the feel seamlessly integrated into the rest of this masterpiece in artwork.

The opening sequence/credits to 'Stranger than Fiction'. Showing Harold Cricks mind label and count every item and every step and have the titles mesh with those was really cool.

Yeah, I liked the computer like designs!

I don't really remember any opening credits... But Star Wars is pretty awesome. My first time seeing it on the big screen was Episode III (12:03 at night! Woo!) And I was like "Wow." The letters were so much bigger then on a TV.

EDIT: I like the Spaceballs opening crawl!

Ha, yes the Spaceballs one is great too. I had forgotten the "Dollars" sequences, they have a great style with the dust and mouth-harp theme.

I liked the intro credits from Back to the Future, with the myriad clocks. Very simple, but it really set the tone of the film and was just interesting to watch.

the Bond openings are good, but If I had to pick the best openly credit then it would be.....
Army of darkness!

Here's an old one, but I always remember how cool the intro to "Lord of the Flies" was. The movie went down hill from there.

The only one I can think of off the top of my head...

Irreversible - crazy, in almost every sense of the word. The text scrolls from bottom to top, the words are written almost entierly backwards, and the camera begins to revolve by the end, setting a perfect scene for the rest of the movie. You can watch it at YouTube, here. Probably not to everyone's taste, but I think it's really inspired.

Also...
Casino Royale's was pretty cool but also really long.
That was a cool title sequence, and one of my mates works for the company who made it - they mainly do advertising, though they've done the last three or four bond titles, and I think that their advertising background shows through. But yeah, in all, very nice sequence.

Cheers,
Arktic.

Monsters Inc. is the first one which springs to mind.

Also, someone's going to have to say it - Star Wars, quite possibly the most famous opening crawls ever and I have to admit - even though the new trilogy was dire I still got excited watching the opening sequence.

Snatch's opening is great too, with the camera following the security monitors.

My current favourite has to be "Sympathy for Lady vengeance". It's online over at youtube.

The ones I remember off the top of my head:

Fight Club - The journey through the brain ending up at the gun.

Delicatessen - The crew described by the item in the room.

Men In Black - with the weird insect and the windscreen.

I totally forgot "Snatch" and "Anchorman"!
"Unique New York...Unique New York...Unique New York"

Another classic one is the ending credits to "Hot Shots". Recipies for brownies, cookies, and buiscuts are thrown in randomly throughout the ordeal. And then right before the screen blacks out, after the MPAA and other liscenses, it reads: "If you had left the theatre when these credits started, you could be home by now.
Those "Lady Vengance" and "Irreversible" ones are cool too, although I have never seen the movies.

I like any opening credit sequence that uses music everybody knows or everybody thinks they know. Or title sequences with a catchy tune like:
Pulp Fiction- I love the way the music almost wants to make you dance.

Dusk Till Dawn- That is so cool- driving down the highway, music loud and it has x-ray vision at the end of it, that is so exploitation cinema inspired by Grindhouse movies.

Casino Royale- Realy gets you in the mood for Bond better than all the other theme tunes.

Resivour Dogs- So many people have copied it, so it is a classic.

The Big Lebowski- I love folk tale type narration and there for it is the perfect title sequence for me.

Casino- Or any Scorcesse film at that.

The Star Wars opening crawl is duplicated by fans all the time and-for the few that aren't an attempt at being funny but just turn out lame-no one has been able to successfully duplicate the feeling of the crawl. I wonder why...must be subliminal messaging. wink
