One of the strangest trailers I've seen in a long while. I can imagine the producers sitting in a room with the writers and thinking "right, let's think of all the things we can do with boats!"

Boats sailing upside down underwater!

Boats on sand!

Boats flying through the air!

Boats in space!

Boats on Mars!

Boats on snow!

Boats on a plane!

Boats in Martin Short!

Boats in the jungle!

Boats in New York!

Boats in time!

Boats in a bottle!

Can't be worse than the second one. Looks a tad effects heavy to me but I'm hoping for a return to form (well, the first one was pretty good).

Boats on fire!

I just got to watch it. It was a sweet trailer, but I'm trying not to expect too much. I haven't seen a HD version yet. I'm assuming they'll have one on apple trailers, but it's not there yet.

The Similarities between Pirates of the Caribbean and Monkey Island haven't gone un-noticed by Ron Gilbert either. Although he's a self confessed fan of the PoTC movies.

Apparently plans for a MI film were under way when the project dropped, at the same time plans for PotC developed. Many believe that a lot of the ideas were simply ported across.

Depp has also cited as Guybrush Threepwood as an influence to how he acted his character.

Not that it matters a great deal, I'm a fan of both. I just can't keep my mouth shut whilst watching the DVDs though, especially when Jack Sparrow is rowing in a coffin, and then the Voodoo Lady makes her appearance, albeit slimmer than her game incarnation.

Yeah, the coffin-boat seemed to be a step too far!

Thing is, did Monkey Island come up with this stuff, or did it 'borrow' from the original PotC ride? Or are they simply all taking from the same source - ie, pirate mythology, and thus share a lot of elements?

Personally I find Monkey Island's 'world' and story far more interesting than PotC. The various islands in MI1 and 2 have far more personality than those in the PotC films, to my mind.

Monkey Island has better monkey jokes, too.

I think the elements of hunting for treasure, walking the plank and general swashbuckling are all archetypal. Though I can't say I saw many, if any similarities between the PoTC ride and Monkey Island. In fact, until the ride was altered to fit elements of the movie I would have had trouble identifying similarities between the ride and the PotC film.

To further add to the mystery - an old tv commercial for Disney land Paris played the LeChuck theme whilst advertising a particular pirate ride with credits to Lucas arts appearing briefly on the bottom of the screen. There are too many coincidences for me to believe that Monkey Island hasn't been a big influence on PotC.

Conspiracy!

That Gilbert is jokey about the matter and is a fan of the PotC movies is something I'm pleased about though. His Blog on grumpygamer.com describes how he watched the PotC 2 trailer through a pair of binoculars on his neighbours tv. smile

-Hybrid.

p.s. In MI2 : LeChuck's revenge, the name of the dog which carries the key to the imprisoned Guybrush is named 'Walt'. hehe.

Yeah, I think it would be awesome to make Monke Island the movie...except that now, everyone who hasn't played the games would be like: "That was a rip-off of PotC!"

I had the sudden urge to turn this thread into banter comprised of our favorite monkey island quotes, but I don't want to veer off topic.

As for the movie itself, this has potential. I've heard people say that the first two were just preludes to how crazy At World's End will be, so I'm excited for that. I was actually one of the few who liked the sequel, and thought that it fits nicely with the first one. Now, I'm not the biggest fan of Chow Yun-Fat, but it seems like he may be able to pull off this whole pirate thing. Some may be as so daring as to say that this trilogy is the "Star Wars" of our time, but I would have to humbly disagree. While it is making similar dollar figures, let's just be honest, either the LOTR trilogy is the "Star Wars" of our times, or nothing is. By this time, anything I write is merely for appearance's sake, and the only way you are reading this is to see if I actually wrote anything in the iddy bitty spaces. I did and here it is. My plan is to make my post "trail off" and then burst in with my favorite monkey island quote, thus providing the comedy, and using humor to make people laugh. Here I go, wish me luck.......

I'm with you. In fact, I loved it and if the third is anything like it, PotC will be amongst my favorite trilogies ever.

I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel, too, and thought it was of a similar standard and entertainment-value as the original - which, to me, means a good couple of hours of fun, if nothing amazing.

The only problem is that the sequel was massively too long - hopefully the third film will have some tighter editing.

Overall it's a shame Bruckheimer didn't hire some better writers. The Pirates films are great filmmaking, but have rather crappy scripts at their core. It's a testament to the fun cast and Verbinski's skills and those of his crew that they are such entertaining films despite that. The PotC2 making of material on the DVD is really quite shocking as they reveal just how clueless and disorganised the writers were.

If the films had been written by people as talented as the rest of the crew, then they could have been the best movies of all time. Let's say...Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer, working together, for example. smile

Oh I totally thought that I was in some sort of minority for liking it.

I guess Schwar's rant about how it was the worst thing since non-sliced bread prepared me for the worst, and I ended up liking it quite a bit.

I concur, the writers were rather sloppy and after watching the bonus feautures I was amazed that they were even able to pull the thing off.

How did POTC3 immediately go to Monkey Island?

FXhome is downright amazing. wink

The trailer is alright. Too effects/boat heavy for my liking. I never really liked any of them, but if I had to say something I'd say the first had a nice originality to it and good practical effects.

I never understood the hype. Pirates! Lame, at least for me.

No, really it looked alright. Maybe a bit over the top, and peculiar. Wait, I'm describing exactly what was so entertaining about the others. So I'm pumped. And not just for seeing Kiera Knightly. That monkey is cool too. And uhh, I think there will be frozen Pirate Beards, which is always a plus... And an abudnance of cg water. So yeah, you can count on me seeing it in theatres at least twice!

I love all three of them. I agree that they get progressively stranger, but that didn't stop me form liking two or this trailer. Jungle Jack was badass at the end. Anyways, I can't wait for this. ^5 for 2007 films.

I liked Dead Man's Chest as well...perhaps not as well as the first one, but I still liked it.

I think that one of the biggest problems with the sequel is that they felt that they had to make it a "trilogy." I think that it could have been much better if they would have made 3 stand-alone movies - like the Indyana Jones movies for instance.

Oh, and who cares if this gets turned into a Monkey Island Quotes thread...sounds like fun to me smile
I'm also courious if people think that LeChuck is more like Davy Jones or Barbossa, and if Guybrush is more like Will or Jack?

Chow Yun-Fat!? what the hell? Kung Fu Pirates?

I'm looking forward to the 3rd movie. It'll either make or break the 2nd one. Personally I liked dead mans chest but it doesn't stand on its own, which is a shame. Also seems a bit of a mistake to wait so long before releasing the 3rd, whats the point in having a cliffhanger when everyones forgotten it before you capitalise on it?

Well, they have make it before they release it. Even if they did film them at the same time they still had to do effects on the 3rd before releasing it.

They didn't film the whole thing at the same time as the second one, only select scenes so they didn't have to re-visit locations. But yeah, I'm sure they're still finishing stuff. And I agrree that it is too bad they made the second one dependant on the third.
