Hello,

I like to put a butterfly or butterflies in my movies as one of my little trademarks (I guess in a way John Woo uses doves). However, filming the little things is very hard, and they are never where you want them!

Can anyone be so kind as to make a preset of a single butterfly flying in a little pattern, and maybe another one of a little group of butterflies hovering around? I know there used to be one for AlamDV2 that someone made, but I see it is no longer around.

Many thanks indeed.

Thanks for that, but its not good enough for what I need. The halo around the edges doesn't help either sad

None taken. But I do not think you will find a better plugin for EffectsLab. I was just wondering why you would prefer something better.

Its something about the colours, it looks a little too exotic or comic bookish for me. Its too colourful. And the halo round the edges doesnt make it look any better sad

Ive managed to find an animated GIF on a website and have made it into an AVI. Its far from perfect but I will have to keep this unless someone can do better?

What about finding or photgraphing a high quality still of a butterfly and then making an animation that runs for a few frames?

Using a photo editing program it would be pretty simple to cut out the wings and then distort them to create a basic flap cycle. You would only need two or three different positions as the wing cycle for buterflies is so fast.

Use tiff file format with a transparent background and Comp Lab will composite that beautifully.

I wud have no idea where to start, lol! This will do for now, my own Gif to AVI, but ideally I would like a preset done by someone more aversed in the ways of preset making than I.

Hmm, I'm not really sure how you could make a Preset out of this, unless it was made with Neon Lights or something (Which I believe would be cartoonish wink ). Sounds more like Stock footage to me. Perhaps someone here works at one of those places that have tons of butteflies in a big cage and they could film one in front of a Green/Blue screen. However, this seems a bit unlikely...

But also, if this comes to be too much of a problem, I would just find a different "Trademark" for your films. Don't get stuck on a certain idea, just make movies!

It's probably not too late. Unless your a major production company that would go down the tube if you changed your trademark. This usually doesn't happen however...

I know, Im not doing it out of principle. I dont put butterflies in every film I do, but I do put one or two in when I feel it fits the scene and the opening shot of this movie Im doing suits having one in shot. It would look amazing.

Also, Im not asking for a preset just for this movie, it would get used on some other films in future.

But Im not changing a trademark I put in to personalise my movies, its like having someone having asked Kubrick to stop using the Steadycam or John Woo to stop using slow motion.

I think we should end this discussion before we get too OT. If anyone feels they might be able to help, I'd be very interested in hearing from you guys.

Thanks for your time!

Just a note; as I have now finished the movie using a digital butterfly made from an animated GIF, I would very much like to know if anyone can make a better preset version for use in my future films. PMs or replies are fine.

Thank you so much.

well if they are never where you want them as your first post says why not catch one, film it say against a black or greenscreen background and then composite it in. Of course you let it go afterwards and you'd have to be careful afterwards. Just an idea as i think your only other decent option is a 3d animated butterfly and thats again hard to come by.

I dont really have the time to go out catching butterflies.

A 3D one would be hard to do yeah, but a 2D one would be fine for me.

no wasnt offended buddy, hence the "lol" at the end. Was just meant as a ever so slightly humerous reply is all. Hope what you've gone with works out and I look forward to seeing the results.

I don't have any presets for you ,however I do have some B-Roll footage from the Botanical Gardens that you can work with. You are free to use it if you would like. Let me know and I can e-mail the files to you direct.

I know the thread is a little older but i've just joined recently so disregard if you have no use for this info.
Good Luck
