I did that with a lot of grading filters (emboss, desaturate, etc) some animated masks, and a lot of particle smoke mixed with stock footage elements. Basically, I just animated the masks on the graded layer to spread out gradually, and then used another mask to "erase" the subject from top to bottom, with all of the smoke elements added on.
