In fairness it's not bad, just not anything special.

My 2p...

Autoiris - aaaaaaarrrrghhh!!!

The sitting down version of you - why such poor framing, uninspired background, camp dancing?

The edit was ok, couple of clunks, but by and large perfectly competent

The arc was a bit uninteresting - I guess I did extract some tension from the idea that you were going to kill the sitting down you to stop the silly hand gestures, but with all your characters dressed the same, it did degenerate a bit into a 'who's that? Hold on...who cares', for me at least.

Looks like it was all your own work - cam op as well as star etc...looks like you had fun smile Hope you have as much fun on your next shoot.

A music video set to a scissor sisters song? and featuring suicide contemplation along with heavy drinking?

and it was still surprisingly bland....

In all honesty the song was about 4:40 too long (had a cool electronic vibe going on for a few seconds and then it went sharply downhill). I do love the way that no matter what song people always feel a need to crowbar a gun in there somewhere; it's really not that classy, just confusing and unnecessary.

I can't really comment on a technical level because I know bugger all about framing shots and all that stuff but continuity-wise it was interesting how he started off buttoning his shirt and within the space of one cut he was doing up his jacket.

All I'll say is that I watched about 2 minutes and shut it off, I got bored.

But from what I watched I'll say I hadn't expected what I saw, I read the description of the movie on YT and I thought it'd be a 4-minute long dance.

But the picture quality is good, which camera are you using?

Criticism is a tough thing. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how he could have improved the video? He evidently thought he had something good. I'd hate to see someone give up because they were shot down the first time out.

It did look like a movie where you had to operate the cam and act but you still managed to get some good framing and cutting on the action. The effects and compositing were good too.

I would recommend losing the whole "sitting in the chair miming" part though. It is poorly framed and just not a good location (and of course you didn't actually sing the song so it makes no sense other than to fill for time). Maybe try shooting some more narrative to replace those shots or recut to a different piece of music?

Don't be put off by some of the comments you will get on these forums when posting anything. You will find the majority of FX Homers will offer good advice and encouragement.

That's editing - film makers use it for dramatic effect or to compress time. Jump cuts can be effective if used sparingly (and deliberately!) and are certainly not out of place in a music video. If we'd had to see the guy get dressed completely half the video would have been wasted watching him do up buttons.

Hmm... I wonder who could have possibly been the one to give out all those -1s! Could it possibly be joshh? Yes. Very much so.

Keep 'em coming, joshh. smile

It was really really boring. Don't title things like that as a must see because all these people here will never get them 4 minutes of their life back and it quite clearly wasn't a must see.

Reasons why it wasn't a must see.

1, boring locations. A wall and a chair don't make for very good viewing.

2, boring content. If you're going to make a music video it has to be fast pased to keep people interested, especially when using such a bad song. Man putting on shirt - boring, man pouring a martini - boring. Man sitting on a chair miming - boring. Make it a bit more interesting, Man blowing up a shirt, man hitting man with a bottle of martini for example.

3, Technically bad. Editing was ok apart from the fact that the sync with the music was way out (either that or i'd guess you didn't know the words) Framing was bad. Lighting was bad. (see http://fxhome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=27135 for ways to improve that).

4, Bad song. If you're going to use a bad song you need a cheesy video to go with it.

Thats my thoughts on the matter.

So that all the clever-clever folk here are aware: It wasn't joshh that gave the negative ratings in the thread.

There's some fairly pointless and negative attitudes in this thread, which is a shame. However, joshh didn't really help himself with his initial post which rather over-marketed the video without giving any specific details. Still, a more mature response from some of the people that watched it would have been appreciated.

A valuable lesson in how important it is to tailor your marketing spiel to match the video and audience, I think.

I agree.
The comments you made were not constructive Jabooza.

I'm not supporting you being down rated however. I think the ranking system becomes meaningless if it is just seen as something to mess around with by forum members. It should be a rare event that posts get ranked up and it should be equally rare that they get ranked down. Liking or not liking what someone say, even if it is just an insult, doesn't really merit ranking.

I stand by my false accusation! wink

Also, anyone trying to support this guy and act like we should be giving constructive criticism is wrong. He posted the video with no description, asking for nothing, but telling us that it's a must watch and we will love it. It's no surprise that it backfired.

You may well be right but there but it seemed a bit clumsy to me and so gave the impression of a continuity error. The production values of the rest of it makes me think that it may not have been an artistic decision but I suppose it could be for timings sake.
