The Old News System was long overdue an overhaul, which with this redesign we’ve finally implemented. It works a little differently to before, so we thought it deserved a proper introduction.

Stubs

The previous design could only ever display two news posts at a time, showing the full articles no matter their length. This was rather unwieldy, especially now that we’re introducing more reviews, competitions and interviews.

The New News System uses ‘stubs’. These are small snippets that appear on the main community news page. Sometimes they will link to extended articles written by the FXhome.com staff, sometimes to a specific topic on the forum and sometimes you'll visit an external website if we’ve spotted something particularly interesting. Occasionally they might only be a stub, if it’s a particularly minor piece of news.

Buttons

You’ll also find buttons at the bottom of most stubs. ‘Digg it!’ and ‘deli.icio.us’ allow you to recommend a particular news post to those websites, which will help draw more people into the site, while the ‘Comments’ button takes you to the discussion on the FXhome.com forum.

We’re intending to update the news page far more regularly than in the past, so stick it in your bookmarks and get the RSS feed loaded up!

The main thing I have noticed with this is that although it works a lot better than the old system it is not very clear when a stub is linking to a story which is a continuation of that stub or when it is linking to the subject of stub. Eg. the merchandise one that links to the store and the cinema one which continues the newsstory.

Yeah, that's a fair point I think. Some kind of subtle indication of where the link is about to go might be handy (ie, external link, internal FXhome.com link, or to expanded stub topic).
