How do you like our new look? Don’t forget to hit Ctrl-F5 if any pages look strange – it’s probably because your browser still has remnants of the old site floating about in its cache!

This is the biggest redesign of FXhome.com since the original launch back in 2003. We’ve been working flat-out for the last few months to make every part of the website better than ever, from the product pages to the forum. Check out the various news items for more info.

As always, we couldn’t have done it without all the help from the community. Many thanks in particular to the following legends:

Music

Robin Hoffman
Jon Potter
Darren ‘Garrison’ Yamamoto

Narration

S. Michael Leier

Model

Suzanne Moore

Greenscreen

Tubetape.com

Video clips

Ashley ‘Ashman’ Wing
Joby ‘er-no’ Stephens
Marco ‘Sollthar’ von Moos
Bennet Maples
Mehdi ‘mmmprod’ Mostefai
Darren 'Garrison' Yamamoto

And, of course, big thanks to the beta crew for their hard work.

Sorry to be a spoil-sport, but I'm not keen at all. Maybe it's just me, but all of the posts seems to blend into one, and I've lost my beloved Community Home section where I could customize what I saw when I logged in. (ie, New Forum Topics, New Forum Posts, New Films etc).
I always thought the old style was very,... well .... stylish.

Valid points Doone128 and thanks to everyone else for the positive comments!

We will continue to work on the new forum design and now have much better building blocks to creating better layouts. As it was there was far too much white space and a lot of information in a counter-intuitive layout.

The new design is much cleaner but we are aware that banners are making it a little less attractive than we hoped and that we could try and make the division between posts more obvious.

I hope you like the rest of the design and agree the cinema is vastly more attractive and that the News section is greatly improved for news purposes. There is a lot more to come this year so stay tuned.

Maybe it's an idea (if it's possible using coding) to get all the movies in the cinema playing in a flash player seen on the product pages.

The Siege: thats a great idea in principal except its entirely down to luck which movies appear in the cinema and there could be some questionable (or frankly embarrassing) content. If the movies are meant to be a representation of the software, they might not always paint the software in the best light razz

The other trouble is converting the movies into a format which flash can play, which is very limited, but thats a separate issue.

Well, I wouldn't discard the manual content approval system there is now smile

And most of the flash players take FLV as a format, which many programs are capable to convert.

The approval system ensures that the movies are suitable for general viewing. However it doesn't ensure that the effects in the movies are good, because obviously that would be ridiculous. However if a company is going to rely on this footage to sell its products, FXhome would need to prevent some movies being used as 'case studies' of their software, since a great deal of fxhome users' movies are just tests or mucking about and would make the software look less than brilliant razz

The FLV options will be looked into.

Glad everyone is liking the site! As always, there's some tweaks here and there to take care of. The new border between individual posts is definitely an improvement. I think the forum will look better once people update their sigs to fit the new layout, too.

Anyway, there's lots more exciting stuff to come, this is just the beginning. biggrin

Woah... whenever you do this it takes me a few days to get used to it, but it looks pretty cool. But something definently has to be done about the border between the posts. I can hardly tell who said what.

EDIT: Oh. My. Freakin. God. You got rid of force.

These are pretty much my feelings. I dont see anyway to see "new forum posts" (used to have the last 10 forum posts), which is a big drawback.
It doesn't look that much different (same colours).. just seems more... umm... mac ? looks cartoony to me almost

Not everyone has the same opinions though

Other than the design change, the actual navigation and 'operation' of the website is almost identical to before, so it shouldn't be too confusing!

First thing: WHOA! The "Post Reply" pageis freakin' sweet! Wasn't expecting that!

Here are my thoughts.....

Having been browsing FXhome since early 2003, I've been here for most all of the desin overhauls. The conversion to the purply-blue forums, the conversion to the rigid white tabbed navigation, the version from, uh....yesterday, and now today's.

I'm happy to say this is the best version yet.

I do have a few thoughts, though, that I think you should take into consideration:

-The forums seem to blend together when reading a thread. Things seem too convoluted. Perhaps cut some of the fat from a person's post or consolidate their "FXperience", name, post count, and other data into a smaller space.

-The main page could be a bit smaller. On my standard-res 19'' monitor it fills almost the whole frame, and is a bit jarring.

-The white background on the front page needs to go. There's no color or deep grays to pull it together, and therefore it looks a little too empty. Consider revising this.

-I'm not liking the new 'News' page. I'm sure this is something I'll get used to, but the old page had everything you needed in easy-to-find spots. It was simple, concise, and efficient. Now it seems like you've tried to pack content into every area of the page, and it's hard to find the actual 'news' you want to read.

As far as that, these are my compliments:

-"Community" now goes directly to forums, where it should've gone in the first place. Hallelujah!

-The "Post a Reply" page is freaking KICKASS! Best part of the whole rehaul, IMO. Whoever coded this part (Xcession? idk)did a standout job.

-The cinema page.....everything rocks. I can see one or two things being tweaked over time, but the archive with the table-style listings is amazing; so is the whole profile with a scrollbox for "Faded". Cool stuff.

All-in-all, I think this is a pretty good change. As your 7th most frequent visitor in FXHome existence, this definitely has my 'seal of approval', haha.

EDIT:

Just discovered a few more things.

The individual movie pages look awesome.

BUT, there two HUGE things missing, in my opinion. A "view the votes" thing, and the stats that say things like "number of downloads, 5 people feature this in their Top 10, etc". I really liked knowing that, say, 21 people had Cover's Story in their Top Tens (this just struck me because I hit someone's profile button accidentally, and BAM! there's my friend Brian, staring me back in the face, next to the words 2. Cover's Story. Cool addition to the top tens, imo) and knowing how many downloads I had.

Not to sound stupid or anything, but I dunno if getting rid of the "view votes" thing was the best idea. I can understand it being confidential, but I'd still like to see the individual votes on a movie, regardless of who voted what.

Woot! Glad ya like it, ben! It's been a long haul to get this one out, as it's a far more major redesign than any of the previous ones. It's great that most people are mostly liking it! Change is always a bit off-putting at first, so that so many people like it already is good news.

We're going to be tweaking this over time, particularly the infoboxes.

The news itself will start to make more sense when it gets going properly. Currently we've just got a bunch of pre-designed news stubs to introduce people to the new stuff. As of tomorrow we'll start doing fresh posts, at which point it'll hopefully become clearer how it all works.

The new news system will give us much more flexibility to bring you guys more news, more often. It might take us a week-or-two to get into the swing of things, but I'm confident it'll be a winner once the ball gets rolling. wink

-The "Post a Reply" page is freaking KICKASS! Best part of the whole rehaul, IMO. Whoever coded this part (Xcession? idk)did a standout job.
Design by schwar, implementation by malone, harshly critical comments by xcession, I believe.

BUT, there two HUGE things missing, in my opinion. A "view the votes" thing, and the stats that say things like "number of downloads, 5 people feature this in their Top 10, etc".
Number of downloads are still there, at the top right, just underneath the rating. As for the other info, we'll give it a think.

One more thing:

can you consider allowing more height for sig images? I'm not talking anything drastic, just like 10 or 15 more pixels to see the sigs. I know you dont' want ginormous image crowsing the forums, but seeing as the forums as "by the people, for the people" essentially, I think allowing them proper 'advertising' would be a good idea.

Something that's weird is that though my larger sig image is cut off because it's too large, it's still distinctly shorter than, say, er-no's sig image by about 20px or so. Weird.

Just a suggestion.

Any chance, to help make the threads easier to follow, the colour of posts in a thread could alternate? Odd numbered posts are on a white bg, the even ones on maybe a light grey, that kind of thing? I have a slight visual impairment and the current layout is rather difficult to follow.

As other people have mentioned, everything blends together for me, and it's a bit hard to follow.

I think an alternating BG thing wouldn't deviate from the colour scheme you have going at the moment, and it'd just make it a LOT easier to see who's text is who's. The gap between posts makes it much easier, but it's still more difficult to read - especially when there's lots of very short posts next to each other (where there's more info either side of a post than actual content).

Other than that, very sexy indeed. Almost(but not quite) as sexy as Tarn wink

Great work guys!

Cheers,
Arktic.

Malone has been working really hard to get this site finished before... well, I better not talk about that wink

He has done a great job putting together the code and layouts from the random and badly finished images/html he was handed a while back.

It really had to be done to help FXhome move on to the next level and provide you guys with the content you need.

The rest of the year is going to be our busiest ever!

dangit I hate suspense! wow! I love the new look guys! It's just plain awesome. When I saw the myspace bulletin about new updates I half expected to find the fxvault. But alas, we must still wait longer

I like it a lot too, though I'm not too sure about the light blues around the top. The design is great though, but I agree with Arktic about having alternately coloured posts - I keep on missing the short responses.

Also, would be great to have the messages indicator back.

On the whole, love it

Thanks for removing the FX Credits in the cinema, that confused so many people that I linked. I also think the new movie is much better on the front page, shorting the light saber part and making it note the starting clip makes it look a lot more professional.

Wow nice job, I love the whole site, I think it's much improved.

However, if I were you I would change those product icons. IMO they look positively DREADFUL, it looks like some 13-year old used an online tutorial to quickly whip up a l33t logo... doesn't match the sleekness of the rest of the site at all IMO.

Otherwise, great!

Which product icons do you mean? I like all the icons except the promotional video logos for programs like Premiere and FinalCutPro and those logos looked bad. I suppose the real ones weren't included for copyright reasons?

Edit: Checked Premiere homepage and that "Pr" appears to be the new logo. Apologies Fxhome. But that is one ugly Premiere logo.

I mean the FXHome products' icons. All of them. They have that OS X 10.2-era aqua bubble look on them, which does not look professional at all. It does look sort of acceptable at full 128x128 resolution but it just scales horribly.

I dunno what you mean about the NLE product icons, those were all the right ones... I'll agree that Moviemaker, Vegas, and Premiere's icons were ugly, but iMovie HD and Final Cut Pro have some awesome icons.

I love it. I would like a lot of things people mentioned. The product logos in one's post, the icon things, are kind of ugly IMO. I also liked lightsabers, so a replacement would be kind of cool. I've always wanted more profile options. Youtube and Myspace were added, but there could be more. Maybe like "what NLE you use" etc. and an icon would show up in your post, kind of like "FXPreset maker" etc. Just a thought and more is possible. But the update is still cool and the site is visually awesome.

I think topics seem absolutely jumbled together. If someone didn't have a sig pic it would be near impossible to distinguish it from the following post. I'm exaggerating a tad, but it's still hard on the eyes.

Yup, those are the new Adobe product logos, which they've adopted across their entire range.

Bizarre, ain't it?

Thanks again for all the comments, we'll be looking over them all carefully to see where we can tweak and improve.

Pooky, wait to see how the new icons are used in the future and hopefully you'll agree they are much MUCH nicer. I think they are WAY more professional than the old icons even if they do have the sweetie look. The old ones were not even recognisable as icons to many people. I have them in my *special* versions of the software so they appear on my Windows task bar and Mac OS X dock - they look WAY better to me.

To those people having trouble getting used to the forum I have a couple of things to say which might make you feel better. smile

Firstly, we'll be looking in to adding some of the features and design changes you want over the next few weeks. We want to make this site great for you all to enjoy but change was needed.

Secondly, give the forum design a week or so to sink in. We have used this updated look for a couple of weeks now and by the end of the first week could barely bring ourselves to use the old forum because it looked too messy and random - your really do learn to love it.

Yeah, I think it willtake a little while for people to get used to. A lot of people said similar things to the version before this one, and I admit it took a few weeks before it sank in as well.

But onward we go....

Have you considered shifting the signature graphics to the right, so they are right justified? (or maybe even centered) Sure, it would take some getting used to, but I think the overabundance of pictures on the left side of the screen make it hard to recognize where one post ends and another begins.

Check out posts 48-50, by Pooky and Mellifluous. Very easy on the eyes, very easy to recognize at a glance that there are three posts there. (Yes, Pooky has a sig graphic, but it is very low key.) In those examples, it seems that each new post is clearly introduced by the avatar picture at the left.

Now compare posts 52 and 53 by B3n and Redhawksrymmer. Yes, the posts a little shorter here, but you feel like you have do dig through a bunch of graphics in order to find the words. The pictures are a bit overwhelming compared to the text.

Another possibility -- maybe have the sig graphics in a very reduced version, with a full size version that pops up on rollover?

Tim L

(Edit: yeah, I guess I should probably create an avatar for myself one of these days...)

Tim L: yeah the saturation of graphics down the left side of any thread is my issue too, but I believe its being looked into.

This thread isn't representative of the usual forum posts though. Here, most posts are just "yay, new site" etc. With just one line of text in the message, its no surprise that banners and avatars completely overwhelm the thread and prohibit readability.

In most threads, however, people tend to post more, or don't post at all. With just 2 or 3 lines more text in a message, the graphics/text balance becomes a little more even.

All the same, its the signature banners which are the problem really. In my own personal nazi regime, they'd be outlawed razz

You can disable them (sigs) if you don't want to see them. Go to "My Account" >> "Forum Settings" (in the "Sections" box at right side of screen), and then you can uncheck "Show Signatures".

I have mixed feelings on this. I think they often clutter up the threads (a great deal), but I still have them enabled because I kinda like to see what people are up to. And a lot of the banners are pretty creative or artistic. (But they'd be just as creative and artistic if moved to the center, or moved over to the right...)

I think I agree with Pooky. It's not that the icons look bad, it's that they sort of clash with the rest of the interface. The forums have a very soft gradient to them, giving a somewhat flat look. These icons, however, aren't 'flat', they're sort of bulged out. I think if you just put a soft gradient in the background, and the white strip on the top, it would definitely improve.

Anyway, I really like the new theme. Great job guys!

One idea I've been toying with is to only show signatures when a post is greater than a certain height. That way a bunch of short one-liner posts won't have signatures attached (and therefore wont look as cluttered). Whereas more verbose discussions will show the signatures, but as the posts will be large the signatures wont get in the way as much.

I think I could implement that fairly easily with a bit of javascript. I could even make it an user configurable option so everyone could set their own height threshold.

It's still early days though, the site only went live yesterday and it takes a while for things to settle and for people to get used to them. We'll probably wait a while longer to gather more community feedback so we can make the right decisions on what needs tweaking.

Not really had chance to see it all yet, but from what i've seen so far of the forums I prefer the old look. There is no real distinction between posts as there used to be and is hard to seperate one post from the next. Maybe its just because i'm used to the old site but the layout doesnt look so user friendly either. It was neat and simple before and I liked it like that. Once I get chance to look around i'll see what i think of the site overall, but i prefer the forums how they were before.

Hmmm. I'm not sure what I feel about this design. It's the cleanest design yet, everything aesthetically pleasing and all. However, I'm not so sure if it fits the FXhome image.

But that's something completely up to you guys since you own the company, and well...I don't. razz

For the design, everything blends in way too much. My eyes don't seem to know what to focus on. Especially in the forums, I have difficulty staying on one post because each post blends into the next. For the rest of the site, I'm not exactly liking the light content area against the light background contrast. Well, let's just say there isn't an adequate amount of contrast there to begin with. Mind darkening the background just slightly?

I do, however, like the Cinema section. The contrast and color scheme there is well done. Would be nice if that was applied to the rest of the site.

Also, what happened to the individual post links? When I'm referencing something someone said in a thread, I'd rather make a link to that someone's post, not the whole thread.

Sorry if I'm being negative...everyone's said positive stuff so far, so I figured some negatives might help too. biggrin

That's all I have to say for now. I'll probably have more later on.

EDIT: Oh, and what's with the RSS button? It looks so strange. These icons are much nicer.

I must agree with some people on here, this site is great and looks nice, clean, crisp, and professional.

However I miss a few VERY key things...

-Infoboxes MUST be brought back

-Distinction between posts is still pretty poor. I definitely agree with someone's idea that all Signatures be justified to the right... this would create more separation without just adding more space in between posts.

-I'd also add a bit of contrast on the site overall... things do look way too... light. Theres very little separation in colors and it's hard to discern things from backgrounds, etc.

Other than those things, I think the site is pretty slick (love the cinema section).

I love the redesign. My only complaint is the removal of lightsabers. I wasn't too far off a yellow one.wink The site looks awesome though. Very sleek. And as others have already said, the product icons look like candy bars.

I'm lovin everything about the change. Especially the search option.

My only suggestion would be to have a default FXhome avatar to take the place of the white box thats shown if nobody has an avatar. The white boxes makes posts look like they are one continuous post sometimes and I end up not seeing that fact that someone else started talking.

Other than that, the site looks sweet.

I know this has been posted above but I agree that the new forum look makes the delineation between posts less clear. The text boxes have also got wider (I think because you moved the user pics?) which makes two or three line posts harder to read because they are stretched across the screen.

And am the only one missing the lightsabers? I thought they were kind of fun. I'd only just got mine to turn yellow...

Actually I like your idea - there needs to be some kind of placeholder for people without avatars.

I was also wondering if we could get a link back to our profile through the 'My Account' area like there used to be....that would be pretty sweet.

I agree with both he above aforementioned ideas, and it also puzzles me why there's no notification whatsoever on this website as to whether or not one has new messages.

I've let 5 messages pass me by recently before checking my email and realizing I'd received them. Is there any way to remedy this?

Also I'd like to point out that it's very difficult for me to tell that there is new news... With the old system, at least the huge colorful banners changed when a new news item was up, but with those little tiny images I hardly ever notice any of the recent news updates... I'd suggest including the option for bigger images and bigger text to get people's attention more.

To be honest, and I'll probably not win any friends here, I wish it was put back to the way it was.
I've given it time, but I just cannot get used to it. It just doesn't seem to gel as well as the old style.
Even though I didn't contribute many posts previously, I felt a part of something. Now, I'm just lost in unfamiliar territory with bad layout.
Sorry chaps, just my personal opinion.
I still greatly respect what the FXHome guys are trying to do here, but my visits are becoming less frequent and I'm gradually slipping away from here. Am I alone?

I agree, the "New" News is distracting and, as I've mentioned before, hard to find the actual 'news'.

I just now saw the small news image for "Review of Cyn" next to the unnecessarily large, outdated (by now, at least, what with all the updates) "FXHome is ALIVE!" image.

Do you guys plan on circulating these images on a daily basis (or whenever there's new news?) because I think it'd be cool to see "JJ holds out on Shatner" or whatnot as a banner image linking to the thread itself. The newest news item as a banner would not be a difficult thing to do, and it'd be more obvious that 'new news' was out.

Click on "My Account" at the top of the screen (in the "Community" menu bar). In the Right-hand pane of the My Account screen, labeled "Sections", there is a link "Forum Settings". Under Miscellaneous Settings there are notification options for new Private Messages. There are also options for e-mail notifications, Timezone, Signature, etc.

Most of these ideas we're aware of and are tinkering with. Malone's had a few days off due to the crazyness of the launch, but once he's back I'm sure he'll get back to improving the new site.

With the news banners, we're not doing banners for every single news item. With occasionally multiple news items a day, that's simply not practical, and also not necessary as lots of the news items will be 'minor'. The banners are intended to highlight the major news items, so that we can have lots of little news updates without pushing something important out the way immediately.

That was a problem with the old news system - say we put up a really important news post regarding our products, if we did just one more news post, let alone two, it'd vanish off down the page, no matter how (un)important the subsequent news was. This system enables us to highlight what we consider the important news, while continuing to post updates.

Most news sites tend to work in this kind of way, with lots of stubs updating as and when. All you have to do is glance quickly at the headlines...I don't really get why it's difficult to see new news. If you glance at the headline and it wasn't there before....then it's new. razz

We are, however, tweaking the system, as with everything else. As you've probably noticed, we're starting to use more custom thumbnails, such as the recent spiffy Shatner face, which should help to draw attention to new and interesting items.

As for the images, there'll be a new big news banner going up later today. wink

Sounds sweet!

Oh, and the new, more customized news article icons are EXACTLY what I was looking for! The yellow 'fx', the 'KHAAANN!!!", and the Indiana Jones pic are all very nice, spiffy touches.

I like how you've done this, now.
